Après des considérations générales sur l'histoire de la Terre, l'auteur développe la description des différentes époques géologiques considérées au XIXe (primitive, de transition -silurien, dévonien, houiller, permien-, secondaire -triasique, jurassique, crétacé-, tertiaire -éocène, miocène, pliocène-, quaternaire -déluges, glaciaire, création de l'homme et le déluge asiatique-) et l'étude des formations éruptives. l'épilogue se termine sur une vaste question sans réponse : "l'espèce humaine doit-elle un jour s'anéantir et disparaître du globe ?", suivie de considérations religieuses.
