New York: Sheldon and Company 1867. Hardcover. Fair. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. See photos for condition details: Red blind stamped cloth boards with gilt to spine. Exterior is spotted and soiled along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The top of spine is chipped and the lower spine has cracking on both the face and both hinges the rear hinge being about 50%. The internal binding overall good but there is a missing front end page. There are no hinge cracks at the boards but the title page is detached at the very bottom about 2 inches worth. The pages still securely attached but the tear is seen in one of the photos. On page 169 there is another tear this one goes from the bottom left towards the son of the page about 2.5 inches in length. There is also the original owners info lightly penciled on the back of the first end page. The rear to end pages also contain handwriting in pencil mostly name and personal info with the last end page containing additional handwriting. No handwriting was found on any of the text pages. All four illustrations have been verified as being present which includes the frontispiece. <br/> <br/> Sheldon and Company hardcover

Its conquest by the French and restoration to the British Dominions. Declared a 'neutral' island by the contending powers of France Spain and Britain. Dominica had nevertheless been settled informally by the French when it was first conquered by Britain in 1759. Captured by the French during the war of American Independence it was restored to Britain in 1783. When Thomas Atwood published this first history of the island in 1791 therefore Dominica was a new and exposed colony where the French inhabitants still outnumbered the English. Atwood an intelligent man who had been Chief Judge both in Dominica and the Bahamas was greatly impressed by the island's strategic importance and commercial possibilities. He wrote his history to induce Britain to develop the colony and to attract more British immigrants and capital. His history therefore also comprises a complete description of the contemporary Dominica and the sections devoted to commerce are particularly important. Very much 'planter' historian Atwood's strictures on the character of the Negroes make extremely interesting reading especially when compared with his generous sentiments towards the few remaining amerindians. All in all this book still provides the most uniquely vivid if not unbiased picture of Dominica in the late 18th century. 285pp Catalogue of the Cass Library of West Indian Studies. New York: Abelard- Schuman 1966. Orange hardcover cloth binding clean square and tight. One small water spot on front cover and very lightly bumped corners. Inscribed by author on half-title page to two women who provided her with technical information to write the story and also to their dog Pixie! Bottom corner clipped dj with price of $3.50 still intact has the words San Diego scratched out with Sante Fe written in with the same color ink as the author's inscription. Sante Fe is the location of the story so the author must have corrected the misprint! Condition of dustjacket - some chips out of front cover wear top and bottom of spine. Light soiling to back of dj. Brian moves to Sante Fe and his beloved dog is poisoned. He makes friends with a girl whose Mom works for a well-known local kennel. The sheriff gives Brian a wire fox terrier Frisky - then Frisky disappears! The children accompany Cindy's Mom to the big dog show in Denver where they find themselves up against a villian who will stop at nothing. Scarce in hardcover. Size: 8vo - Oblong.
