An 1840 campaign broadside on behalf of Amos Abbot distinguished Massachusetts public servant and founder of the Boston & Portland Railroad. Sin dai giorni che la seguirono, l'occupazione dei territori del Friuli e Veneto, avvenuta in seguito alla sconfitta di Caporetto, non ha mai smesso di essere sotto i riflettori, né ha cessato di attirare l'attenzione dei lettori e degli storici. Ma nonostante la copiosa produzione letteraria, si è sempre avvertita la mancanza di un'analisi del punto di vista di chi occupò quei territori italiani dopo la sconfitta dell'ottobre 1917: l'esercito austro-ungarico. Il presente lavoro, basato sulla relazione del Magg. Gen. Hermann Leidl, ex-capo del dipartimento amministrativo del comando del Gruppo d'Armate del Feldmaresciallo Boroevi?, finalmente fa luce su di un'attività amministrativa di assoluta importanza sia sotto il profilo civile, che militare. Protagonista è quindi il "mondo alla rovescia", ossia la visione di un'occupante che si trovava alle prese, sia con quello che era a tutti gli effetti un territorio nemico, sia con le prospettive dell'occupato (la popolazione italiana che non era riuscita a fuggire dopo Caporetto), impegnato a sua volta nella disperata lotta per la sopravvivenza e messo di fronte, non di rado, a difficili scelte identitarie.
