First and sole edition of this excellent visual record of the Tirah Campaign 1897-1898 prosecuted on the North-West Frontier against the Afridi; four of these "War Albums" were issued by the Black and White a popular illustrated weekly: another two on the Sudan campaign and a naval number completing the series. René Bull is better known as an illustrator of several lavish Edwardian gift books including the Arabian Nights 1912 and Rubaiyat 1913. However he was employed by the Black and White as a war photographer covering the Tirah and Sudan campaigns and later the Second Boer War. His images capture the key moments of the Tirah expedition including the Gordons and Dorsets burying their dead after the assault on the Dargai Heights where four VCs were won a heliograph in operation and perhaps most interestingly the first use in the field by the British Army of an X-ray machine by Walter Caverley Beevor Regimental Surgeon with the Coldstream Guards see Thomas and Benerjee The History of Radiology p. 41 the latter accompanied by a skiagram of a bullet wound to an arm.
