WYMER Norman
A Breath of England. [Complete set, comprising 'A Breath of England. The Southern Shires', 'Wheatsheaf and Willow. The Eastern Shires', 'Green Hills and Grey Spires. The West Midlands' and 'Mere and Moorland. The Northern Counties'].
4 vols., 8vo., First Editions, with 4 frontispieces, very numerous plates and illustrations in the text, and endpaper maps; cloth, gilt backs, a very good, clean set in the dustwrapper (one price-clipped). Wymer's delightful sequence, covering virtually the whole of England, is neither a gazetteer nor the usual rural eulogy. Rather, he sets out to compare and contrast traditional variations between one county and another, emphasising industries, customs, superstitions, legends, folklore and, above all, people. It is an unusual approach, based on a charming prose style and enhanced by evocative illustrations both photographic and line. A lovely set, and uncommon in this condition

STREET A. G.
Hitler's Whistle. FIRST EDITION IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER

Arguably the scarcest of his wartime collections, this important Street title is based on his week-by-week farming diary of the first three years of WWII. Prior to the outbreak of war Street had been primarily a writer and broadcaster; this account of his return to the land gives much fascinating detail on the farming practices of the period. The 'whistle' of the title refers to an air-raid siren. This scarce work is rarely found in really good condition due to stringent wartime production standards. Any dustwrapper is a real bonus. CAMERON D.K.
The so-called 'Crofter' trology complete. Comprising: 'The Ballad and the Plough', 'Willie Gavin, Crofter Man' and 'The Cornkister Days'.

Portrait of a Vanished Lifestyle' (1980) and 'The Cornkister Days. Portrait of a Land and its Rituals' (1984). David Kerr Cameron's masterly study of the old Scottish rural way of life is carefully structured. In the first volume he tells of the larger farms or 'farmtouns'; in the second he examines the more numerous smallholdings or crofts. In his final volume he broadens the focus to include the life of the fields, the seasons and rituals, and the culture of the agrarian background in general. In its scope, its detail and its rigorous objectivity the trilogy is unique. A handsome set of an important contribution to the agricultural history of Scotland.
