Arguably the scarcest of his wartime collections, this important Street title is based on his week-by-week farming diary of the first three years of WWII. Prior to the outbreak of war Street had been primarily a writer and broadcaster; this account of his return to the land gives much fascinating detail on the farming practices of the period. The 'whistle' of the title refers to an air-raid siren. This scarce work is rarely found in really good condition due to stringent wartime production standards. Any dustwrapper is a real bonus. Portrait of a Vanished Lifestyle' (1980) and 'The Cornkister Days. Portrait of a Land and its Rituals' (1984). David Kerr Cameron's masterly study of the old Scottish rural way of life is carefully structured. In the first volume he tells of the larger farms or 'farmtouns'; in the second he examines the more numerous smallholdings or crofts. In his final volume he broadens the focus to include the life of the fields, the seasons and rituals, and the culture of the agrarian background in general. In its scope, its detail and its rigorous objectivity the trilogy is unique. A handsome set of an important contribution to the agricultural history of Scotland.

One of the earliest escape narratives. The author was captured near Tobruk whilst commanding 5th New Zealand Infantry Brigade and placed in Campo 12 near Florence. During his captivity he shared quarters with VC holders Neame and Carton de Wiart whose exploits he recorded in detail. Hargest was one of the highest ranking Allied escapers on WWII.
