I manus, monogami puritani circondati da poligami, credono che nel mondo ci sia carenza di donne; perciò non soltanto fidanzano i figli il più presto possibile, ma parlano di una lotta tremenda sostenuta dallo spirito del mondo per guadagnarsi l'anima di ogni donna appena morta. Margaret Mead esplora gli usi e i costumi sessuali di sette popoli indigeni del Pacifico, con cui ha vissuto e che ha lungamente studiato, e di ciascuno racconta la scoperta dell'identità sessuale da parte di bambini e bambine, la trasformazione delle prime esperienze infantili nel simbolismo disciplinato della vita adulta, il temperamento sessuale in adolescenza e in età prematrimoniale, il ruolo della donna e dell'uomo nella riproduzione della specie, comparando queste tradizioni con quelle della società occidentale contemporanea. Ne emerge sia l'irriducibile molteplicità delle culture sia l'incidenza dei costumi sull'organizzazione della psiche e del consesso umano, soprattutto nell'ambito della differenziazione di genere. Ma se ogni società è unica e diversa da tutte le altre, e se il carattere dell'individuo, il suo comportamento, persino i suoi desideri sono sovradeterminati dall'ambiente in cui si forma, c'è un'unica conclusione possibile: quasi tutto è cultura, quasi nulla è biologicamente innato e universale...
