In apparenza, l'oggetto sembra agire come l'immagine speculare dell'essere umano che sostituisce. Proseguendo le ricerche sul rito e sulla memoria sociale avviate con "Il percorso e la voce", questo libro dimostra che, quando viene stabilito un legame di credenza, l'oggetto-persona agisce in realtà in modi molto più complessi. Sia esso un giocattolo, una statuetta rituale, un monumento funebre o un'opera d'arte, questo «essere animato dal pensiero» è più simile a un cristallo che a uno specchio. Carlo Severi considera, in primo luogo, la produzione di immagini come un «fatto di specie» inseparabile dall'esercizio del pensiero (e quindi universale) e, in secondo luogo, «il gioco dell'arte europeo» solo come uno dei tanti fra quelli che è possibile rischiare con l'immagine, non certo l'unico. Per sviluppare questa ipotesi, l'autore studia tre tipi di spazio: astratto, chimerico e governato dalle leggi della prospettiva. Nell'ambito della stessa cultura, e in ogni cultura, coesistono diversi livelli ontologici legati all'esercizio del pensiero attraverso l'immagine. L'antropologia della memoria così come viene costruita da Severi conduce verso un'antropologia generale delle forme di esercizio del pensiero.
