"The object was to gather all possible information concerning our native tribes while it could be done. The sign language pictography burial mounds religious rites stone implements etc. are described in the greatest detail. These papers are the result of original investigation and must always be one of the best sources of information on the subjects treated" Larned 678. The Bureau pf American Ethnology was established by Congress in 1879 as a separate and independent research unit of the Smithsonian Institution. The Bureau's focus was on North American Indian cultures. The Bureau in effect founded American anthropology especially linguistics and ethnology when there were no advanced studies in the field and almost no full-time anthropologists. These 48 Reports along with the 200 bulletins the Bureau also issued were the premier publications in anthropology for most of the Bureau's 86 years of existence. unknown
