Um so erfreuter war Nigel Barley, daß bei den Dowayos eine seltene, noch nie von Weißen beobachtete Beschneidungszeremonie stattfinden sollte. Also machte er sich auf nach Kamerun, und dieses kleine Buch, eher Reisebericht als Sachbuch, ist sein Protokoll eines großen Scheitern, das klar macht, welche riesige Lücke zwischen den Träumen von von der heilen Welt der Primitiven und der alltäglichen Wirklichkeit klafft. ‎Inhalt: Der Titel Onkels Tochter, keine sonst ist die dichteste Formulierung einer Heiratsregel, nämlich: Ehe mit der Tochter des mütterlichen Onkels bzw. einem Mädchen, das als eine solche angesprochen wird. Regelmäßig wiederholt, führt dieser Typ von Verwandtenheirat zu einem über Generationen gleichbleibenden Bündnis mindestens dreier sozialer Gruppen, von denen eine jede von einem der Partner Frauen empfängt und an einen anderen Frauen abtritt. Die damit festgelegten Beziehungen zwischen den frauentauschenden Gruppen sind asymmetrisch und gewichtet: Geber stehen höher als Nehmer. Die aus der Heirat mit der matrilateralen Kreuzkusine erwachsende Allianz ist eine der elementaren Verwandtschaftsstrukturen. Sie hat in der Ethnologie zu explosiven Auseinandersetzungen Anlaß gegeben. Oft wurden diese auf dem Niveau des Modells geführt, ohne eingehende Erörterung des jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Umfelds, in dem sich die Heiratsregel entfaltet. Das vorliegende Buch geht einen anderen Weg. Es stellt das asymmetrische Heiratsbündnis in die konkreten Zusammenhänge einer ganzen Kultur. Zunächst legt es dar, wie bei dem Bergvolk der Magar im zentralen Himalaya die eheliche Verbindung mit der Kreuzkusine mütterlicherseits zum Grundstein des Gesellschaftsvertrags avanciert: als eine in der Mythologie verankerte, schon von den Heroen der Schöpfung praktizierte Regel. Sodann vergleicht es den mythischen Entwurf mit der gelebten Wirklichkeit. Der diachrone Blick offenbart Veränderungen in der Zusammensetzung der Allianzpartner: war es im Anfang eine einzige, aus drei exogamen Abstammungsgruppen bestehende Dreierallianz, so bildet sich unter dem Druck stetiger Bevölkerungszunahme eine örtliche Gesellschaft mit zahlreichen matrimonialen Tauschgruppen. Diese bleiben indessen nicht unter einem einzigen Dach, vielmehr formieren sie sich zu einer Vielfalt kleiner, in sich geschlossener autonomer Tripelallianzen.
