Thiel. - Mit diesem ersten Rundbrief wollen wir Sie einen Blick in unsere Arbeit tun lassen, damit das Band zwischen Ihnen und uns vielleicht etwas enger wird. Dieser Tage fand ich in meinem Briefkasten den "aktuellen Stadtplan des FVV" - Frankfurter Verkehrsverbundes. Ein Blick zum Museumsufer zeigt mir, daß man das Museum für Völkerkunde einfach vergessen hat. Das Museum für Völkerkunde - ein weißer Fleck am Schaumainkai. Dabei könnte gerade in Frankfurt - der Stadt mit dem Internationalen Flughafen, den Internationalen Messen und dem hohen Anteil an Ausländern - ein Völkerkundemuseum Verständnis wecken für das Anderssein von Menschen in fremden Kulturen, auch Verständnis im Umgang mit Menschen anderer Sprach- und Kulturzugehörigkeit hier in unserer Stadt. Es mag heute nicht wenige Menschen geben, die ein Völkerkundemuseum als überflüssig erachten: man sieht in ihm noch immer jene Sammelstelle von Exotika aus der Kolonialzeit. Verständlich, daß man solche Sammlungen für überflüssig hält. Es gibt aber auch jene andere Meinung, die da erwartet, unser Museum habe ausschließlich Gegenwartsprobleme der Dritten Welt aufzugreifen. Ich glaube, als Ethnologe und Leiter des Völkerkundemuseums kann man sich mit keiner der beiden Meinungen identifizieren. Unsere Völkerkundemuseen entstammen der Kolonialzeit. Man hat Kuriosa und Exotika gesammelt und ausgestellt, bis dann zu Beginn unseres Jahrhunderts europäische Künstler diese Objekte als Kunstwerke feierten. Nun sammelten Museen vorwiegend traditionell gefertigte Objekte, und zwar als Kunstobjekte. Daß die außereuropäischen Völker nur äußerst selten diese Gegenstände als Kunstobjekte betrachteten, kümmerte die Europäer wenig. Nur selten holte man die Meinung der Künstler, Besitzer oder Wissenden ein. Man zwängte die Objekte in europäische Kunstkategorien, ohne nach ihrem Sinn und Zweck in ihrer eigenen Kultur zu fragen. Die Objekte wurden in einen anderen, ihnen fremden Sinnzusammenhang gestellt. Traditionellerweise verbindet man mit einem Völkerkundemuseum drei Aufgaben: Objekte sammeln, sie wissenschaftlich bearbeiten und sie für das Publikum ausstellen. Die wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung wird von Außenstehenden, wie z. B. den Geldgebern, gerne, wenn schon nicht als ganz überflüssig, so doch als weniger wichtig erachtet. Dabei gleitet ein Ausstellungsbetrieb ohne sorfältige wissenschaftliche Aufarbeitung bald in Leerlauf und Hohlheit ab. … (Vorwort J. F. Thiel)‎

November 1897 in Berlin; gestorben 9. Februar 1967 in London) war eine deutsche Ethnologin. ... Ende der 1920er Jahre machte sie eine Schiffsreise nach Kamerun und lernte bei der Rückfahrt den Afrikanisten Diedrich Westermann kennen, der sie in der Folgezeit ermutigte, eine Forschungsreise nach Kamerun anzugehen, und der den Kontakt zur britischen Mandatsverwaltung herstellte. Pfeffer erlernte in Berlin ein wenig Hausa und informierte sich am Berliner Völkerkundemuseum über das Anlegen ethnographischer Sammlungen. … Pfeffer unternahm 1927/28 ihre erste Expedition nach Kamerun und in das nordöstliche Nigeria. Ihre Sammelergebnisse und die Fotografien verkaufte sie an das Berliner Museum, sie schrieb Zeitungsartikel und das Buch Die weiße Mah. 1929 reiste sie mit dem Kameramann Friedrich Dalsheim und der Fotografin Lotte Errell nach Togo zu den Ewe, wo ein Film über das Leben von der Zivilisation unberührter Eingeborener entstehen sollte. Dalsheim fertigte aus dem Material den Film Menschen im Busch. Der Plan, die Expedition zu den Fulbe in Nigeria fortzusetzen, scheiterte, als Pfeffer an Kinderlähmung erkrankte und nach Berlin zurückkehren musste. Sie benötigte die nächsten zwei Jahre zur Rekonvaleszenz. Pfeffer studierte in dieser Zeit an der Berliner Universität Völkerkunde unter anderem bei Westermann, bei Richard Thurnwald und Fritz Krause. Auf ihrer dritten Reise (1932 bis 1934) wurde sie von dem südafrikanischen Journalisten John Carlin begleitet, der 1937 einen Reisebericht mit ihren Fotografien veröffentlichte. Sie mussten zunächst acht Monate in Lagos auf ihre Forschungsgenehmigung warten und gingen dann in die französische Kolonie Kamerun nach Lompta in der Region Adamaoua. Im Verlauf der vorbereitenden Arbeiten stellte es sich dann heraus, daß eine Beschränkung auf Material aus einem eng begrenzten Bereich innerhalb des Hindukusch der Übersichtlichkeit und Klarheit der Ausstellung zugute kommen müsse. Nach langen Überlegungen fiel die Wahl auf jenes Gebiet, das durch den Andjuman-Paß im Westen und den Ansatz des Wakhan-Zipfels im Osten seine Begrenzung findet, und das von Baharak und Zardeu im Norden sich über den Hauptkamm des Gebirges hinweg nach Süden bis Nuristan und in das Kalash-Gebiet am Westrand Chitrals erstreckt. Die Exponate stammen von Gruppen der Tadschiken (in den Gebieten von Zardeu, Baharak, Djurm und Zebak) und von Berg-Tadschiken (Sanglich und Mundjan) auf der Nordflanke des Gebirges ebenso wie von Kafiren in Nuristan und von den Kalash auf der Südabdachung des Gebirgszuges. Ethnisch haben wir es also mit Menschen zu tun, die sprachlich den Iraniern wie den Indo-Ariern zugehören: Die Tadschiken sprechen einen persischen Dialekt, die Berg-Tadschiken nordost-iranische Restsprachen, die Kafiren haben Idiome, die möglicherweise zwischen dem Iranischen und dem Indischen stehen, und die Kalash gehören zur Dard-Gruppe, die eng an die alte Sprache der arischen Einwanderer Indiens angelehnt ist. … (Fr. They diffused (and still continue to diffuse) transethnically across the region, ignoring linguistic and national boundaries, and forming translocal networks of owners of the same institutions. The study documents the histories of cult associations and their dissemination by purchase and sale which includes the transfer of immaterial property rights. This mode of dissemination differs substantially from that of secret societies in the West. ... With its central focus on the purchase of cult associations, the study explores the transaction of rights in the ownership of the institutions and their performances. The purchase includes the acquisition of rights in ownership, performance, secret sign languages, and knowledge of the associations' functioning. Einband stw. gering berieben. - Englisch. - The African past is often portrayed sentimentally, as if the continent had been living, before the impact of international capitalism and the colonial period, in perfect equilibrium, unchanging and unsullied by the rest of the world. This image of 'traditional' African society and culture is not historical and does not stand the test of research. As demonstrated here, over the centuries the populations of what are now Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda were with their agricultural economies and iron technology continually increasing in numbers, modifying their environments and forced to devise new techniques of cultivation, herding and production. This meant new ways of organising themselves socially and politically. Sometimes the changes were local and gradual; on other occasions their impact was revolutionary, and reflected across wide regions of the world. To appreciate this alternative image of Africa and its past, it is necessary to reject certain conventions of historical writing and especially the obsession with 'origins'. Troppo disinvoltamente richiamata dal mondo della comunicazione, utilizzata impropriamente nel lessico dell'emergenza e dell'umanitario, la nozione di etnia, già presente nel discorso coloniale, è stata ambiguamente riconvocata nel campo politico e nel dibattito pubblico del nostro paese solo dall'inizio degli anni Novanta, quando i processi di transizione dell'Est europeo e il lungo conflitto nella ex Iugoslavia ne hanno drammaticamente evidenziato il potere di mobilitazione. Questo volume è frutto di un lungo lavoro collettivo che ha preso le mosse proprio dal rifiuto dell'abuso di espressioni come "etnia", "conflitto etnico" o "lotta tribale" e dall'esigenza di riaffrontare criticamente i termini del discorso identitario, a partire dall'analisi delle contraddizioni della realtà africana contemporanea. Partendo da casi emblematici come il Mali, la Costa d'Avorio, il Ruanda e il Congo, i saggi di Jean-Loup Amselle, Jean Bazin, Jean-Pierre Dozon, Jean-Pierre Chrétien, Claudine Vidal ed Elikia M'Bokolo criticano una visione "primordialista" e falsamente oggettiva della nozione di identità etno-culturale, proponendo un completo ribaltamento di prospettiva, per analizzare la costruzione degli spazi politici africani e delle categorie identitarie alla luce della loro storicità, in quanto elementi che maturano già nel quadro della "situazione coloniale" e poi nella realtà postcoloniale. ‎About The Book : This booklet is an attempt at popularization. The first four chapters are practically identical with as many lectures, delivered in 1917 as the January course offered by the Department of Anthropology of the American Museum of Natural History. Each year different topics have been chosen and several members of the staff have cooperated. Owing to the dearth of recent ethnological literature reflecting the position of American field-workers, and at the same time accessible to the interested outsider. The last chapter may not seem to fit within the scope of this publication. It is obviously more technical than the rest in treatment and may appear to deal with too special a topic. About The Author : Robert Harry Lowie ( 1883 – 1957) was an Austrian-born American anthropologist. An expert on North American Indians, he was instrumental in the development of modern anthropology. Lowie undertook several expeditions to the Great Plains, where he conducted ethnographic fieldwork at the Absarokee (Crow, 1907, 1910–1916, 1931), Arikaree, Hidatsa, Mandan and Shoshone (1906, 1912–1916). Shorter research expeditions led him to the southwestern United States, the Great Basin and to South America where he was inspired by Curt Nimuendajú. The focus of some of Lowie's work was salvage ethnography, the rapid collection of data from cultures close to extinction.Ruth Benedict and Robert Lowie were both commissioned during World War II to write a piece about an enemy during wartime by the United States Office of War Information. Unlike Benedict's Chrysanthemum and the Sword in which she describes the culture of Japan without ever having set foot in Japan, Lowie could at least draw on his recollections from the German-speaking world of his childhood. In his book The German People, Lowie took a cautious approach and stressed his ignorance of what was going on in his country of origin at this time. E se il baratro che ci divide dai nostri antenati primitivi può apparirci incolmabile, osservando le società tradizionali ancora esistenti, o esistenti fino a poco tempo fa, possiamo farci un'idea di com'era il nostro antico stile di vita. Società come quella degli abitanti degli altipiani guineani ci ricordano che, in termini evoluzionistici, le cose sono cambiate soltanto di recente, e questo libro ci offre un affascinante ritratto di prima mano di ciò che per decine di migliaia di anni è stata la vita dell'umanità, soffermandosi sul significato che le differenze fra quel passato ormai quasi scomparso e il nostro presente hanno per l'uomo di oggi. "Il mondo fino a ieri" è il libro più personale scritto da Jared Diamond, che attinge a piene mani a decenni di lavoro sul campo nelle isole del Pacifico e da testimonianze sugli inuit, gli indios dell'Amazzonia, i san del Kalahari e molti altri popoli. Diamond non idealizza romanticamente le società tradizionali: alcune fra le loro pratiche restano per noi inaccettabili, ma è importante riconoscere dove e quando le loro esperienze hanno fruttato dei passi avanti nella società e nel comportamento umani.‎

Rispetto alla letteratura antropologica corrente, centrata sul concetto di cultura, "I frutti puri impazziscono" costituisce un punto di svolta: per la prima volta, infatti, l'attività degli etnografi - degli "scienziati" - è vista, con piena consapevolezza teorica, come parte della generale storia intellettuale della modernità, e soprattutto come produzione letteraria, attraverso la quale si ristruttura la coscienza dell'Occidente. Una storia in cui rientrano la fondazione del Musée de l'Homme e la spedizione transafricana Dakar-Gibuti, ma anche una suggestiva esplorazione dei rapporti tra surrealismo ed etnografia, la lettura parallela di Conrad e Malinowski, oltre che saggi su Segalen, Leiris, Césaire e la discussione di Orientalismo di Edward W. Said. Clifford muove da una constatazione: ci troviamo tutti in una condizione di "modernità etnografica", spiazzati in mezzo a tradizioni culturali disgregate, vittime di un'instabilità e di uno sradicamento che sono ormai un destino comune. E tuttavia, proprio da quella che potrebbe apparire una catastrofica perdita di autenticità e purezza, emerge la possibilità di una indefinita ricomponibilità degli antichi oggetti culturali in strutture dotate di nuovo senso.‎

Nella metodologia delle scienze sociali viene data grande importanza alla messa a punto degli strumenti attraverso i quali si indaga la realtà; tuttavia a un primo e superficiale sguardo l'osservazione partecipante potrebbe sembrare priva di uno strumento che faccia da tramite per la raccolta delle informazioni. Emerge dunque forte rischio (soprattutto seguendo la tendenza postmodernista) di affrontare la pratica osservativa senza curarsi troppo dell'aspetto epistemologico e metodologico, assegnando un ruolo assolutizzante all'esperienza attraverso lo stile dell'anything goes. Purtroppo molto spesso ciò conduce a sottovalutare la percezione dell'osservatore come 'strumento' della pratica osservativa. Ciò implica il non prendere seriamente in considerazione il problema della categorizzazione a priori dell'osservatore che inevitabilmente non può scendere sul campo privo dei propri frame concettuali.‎

Dopo una parte introduttiva che espone i fondamenti dell'etnografia (definizioni, origini, basi teoriche, evoluzione), la seconda parte ne delinea i tratti costitutivi di approccio euristico e di pratica di scrittura. La terza parte illustra e descrive - con il supporto di casi tratti da esperienze concrete di lavoro sul campo - alcune tra le possibili modalità di coniugare l'approccio etnografico con le dimensioni tecniche più rilevanti dell'azione formativa.‎
