‎Peter Puzzle-all's New and Improved Riddle Book; or Amusing Companion. Containing some of the best Enigmas Charades Rebusses Anagrams Conundrums &c. ever printed‎

‎1819. London: Dean and Munday 1819.

12mo 35 pp. Original printed wrappers. Covers and folding color frontispiece both detached frontispiece with large chip from top left corner some offsetting but generally clean.

§ A rare children's puzzle book; no copies on OCLC. The publisher's catalogue on lower wrapper lists "Puzzle-all's entertaining Riddle Book" which was published the previous year and is recorded on OCLC in just a single copy at the British Library. Dean and Munday was headed by two sisters Mary Ann and Anna Maria who were born into the Bailey dynasty of publisher's. Their mother Susanna Bailey printed under her own imprint after the death of her husband and after her death in 1810 willed the company solely to her two daughters. "For whatever reason Susan left her sons only a pittance. In her will 'The whole of my business and.everything thereunto belonging' was left to her daughters. By that time both girls had married apprentices from their parent's shop Mr. Thomas Dean Sr. and Mr. William Munday. Nevertheless Susan's will stipulated adamantly that the business was 'for their own sole use and benefit absolutely not to be subject of control of any present or future husband.my two daughters will share equally any profits arising from the printing business.for their own solo use and benefit absolutely independent of any present or future husbands.' Indeed records show that the company Dean & Munday had both sisters Mary Ann Dean and Anna Maria Munday listed as its principals between 1812 and 1840. Perhaps it was because of all the babies the sisters bore or the customs of the early nineteenth century that regardless of Mother Susan's attempts to ensure the female succession of the business it would become identified primarily with the husbands." ‎[Cobbett, William].‎

‎IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE PEOPLE OF THIS KINGDOM. Published July 1803 And sent to the officiating Minister of every Parish in England.‎

‎London: Printed by Cox Son and Baylis No. 75 Great Queen-Street Lincoln-Inn Fields 1803. 1803. Good. - Octavo 6-3/4 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide. Softcover unbound self-wraps laid into contemporary plain hand-made brown wraps titled in ink on the front cover. The hand-made covers are soiled and chipped with tiny pieces out from the corners and the head and tail of the spine. 16 pages with a woodcut vignette of the Royal arms illustrating the bottom of the title page. There is some occasional soiling. There are binding stab marks along the inner edge of the leaves and hand-made covers. Good.
One of several variants of the first separate edition.
Published during the Napoleonic Wars "This violent denunciation of the French was written by Cobbett after the Peace of Amiens which he violently opposed had been shattered by Napoleon's renewal of the war. The pamphlet appeared in the Political Register 30 July 1803 without any indication of its origin. In the same month it was issued by the Government headed with the Royal Arms and sent to the officiating minister of every English and Welsh parish for display and distribution in the churches. It was ascribed to many authors among them John Reeves whose Association republished it . but Cobbett did not disclose his authorship until nearly six years had passed." - M.L. Pearl "William Cobbett: A Bibliographical Account of His Life and Times" page 74 #59.
With his ever colorful language Cobbett concludes that "They would besides introduce their own bloody laws with additional severities: they would divide us into separate classes: hem us up in districts; cut off all communication between friends and relations parents and children; which latter they would breed up in their own blasphemous principles; they would affix badges upon us; mark us in the cheek shave our heads split our ears or clothe us in the habit of slaves! . No; we are not so miserably fallen; we cannot in so short a space of time have become so detestably degenerate: we have the strength and the will to repel the hostility to chastise the insolence of the foe. Mighty indeed must be our efforts but mighty also the need. Singly engaged against the tyrants of the earth Britain now attracts the eyes and the hearts of mankind; groaning nations look to her for deliverance; justice liberty and religion are inscribed on her banners; her success will be hailed with the shouts of the universe while tears of admiration and gratitude will bedew the heads of her sons who fall in the glorious contest." Quoted from pages 15-16.
The English pamphleteer farmer journalist and radical politician William Cobbett 1763-1835 believed in reforming Parliament and sought to end poverty for farm-laborers. Fleeing England following his attempts to expose corrupt military officers he taught English to Frenchmen in the United States and translated works from French into English. His anti-estiblishment sentiments drove him to write pamphlets which brought him into conflict with Dr. Benjamin Rush and thus forcing him to flee once again this time back to England. At first a supporter of the Tories he soon became a radical. He published the Parliamentary Debates and ran unsuccessfully for office. He was arrested and sentenced to Newgate prison for Treasonous Libel following his published objections to the public flogging of local militiamen which were printed in The Register in 1810. He returned to the newspaper business after his release. As the taxes on newspapers were now so high that few could afford them Cobbett began publishing his Political Register as a pamphlet for half the price. The popularity of his journal among the working class made him a dangerous man and following the passage of the Power of Imprisonment Bill in 1817 Cobbett learned that the government planned to arrest him for sedition. Fleeing yet again to the United States he lived on a farm in Long Island and wrote his "Grammar of the English Language". Returning to England in 1819 he continued publishing his politically controversial works. Once again charged with seditious libel Cobbett conducted his own defense so successfully that he swayed the jury which failed to convict him. He finally won a parliamentary seat that of Oldham in 1832 and was able to fight government corruption from within. ‎No place of publication.: 教育資料出版社.Kyoiku Shiryo Shuppansha. circa1930. Four very striking Japanese education posters in colour the posters showing either a Japanese male or a female student in their black school uniform demonstrating the correct position for sitting or standing.

Two creases 15cm and 6.8cm in length respectively from left margin on the poster of the seated boy two repaired closed tears from lower margin 16cm and 3cm on poster showing the seated girl a small area of insect damage upper corner one poster and some general light wear but overall still very good copies of a scarce set of posters. Text in Japanese. Sheet measures 77.8 x 53.4cm These four posters are designed to hang on the wall in the classrooms to teach students how sit and stand properly. The male student is dressed in Japanese school uniform with black jacket with brass buttons and a pair of shorts with knee-high stockings. The female student is dressed in black jacket with sailor-style collar and a skirt. These uniform styles particularly the sailor-suit style for girls started being in general use in Japanese schools in the 1930s suggesting that the posters date from this decade. Correct posture was considered a crucial element in school physical education as it was considered important both for physical health and for conveying proper respect to teachers and others. The posters show the children standing with hands pressed straight against their sides in the position which is also used when bowing to superiors. . 教育資料出版社.[Kyoiku Shiryo Shuppansha]. unknown‎

‎[Cookery] [Education]‎

‎A Practical Cookery Book for Use in Day and Evening Schools‎

‎London and Manchester: John Haywood 1903. First edition. Near Fine. Original pictorial boards with cloth to spine. 76 pages. Faint toning to edges of covers but surprisingly clean overall. Early ownership signature of "Sarah Askworth.1906" to the verso of the front cover and overlaid with tape. Lightly toned throughout but otherwise unmarked without the signs of kitchen use common in such books. Scarce in trade OCLC reports no copies of the present work at institutions.

"Around the year 1900 there was a concern about the physical state of the people of Britain. Even though there had been tremendous efforts in the late 19th century to provide better public health housing and education many children were still no more healthy than they had been back in the 1840s. The new Liberal government elected in 1906 passed various measures to try to deal with this problem.and they gave permission for schools to offer meals to their pupils" National Archives. Efforts to consider the link between education and nutrition had begun in the lead-up to the laws however; and the present work is a scarce surviving example of such a cookery. Its compilers note in the preface "This collection of Recipes has been prepared specially for Day and Evening Schools. The instructions of the Education Department.have been embodied." Given the book's brevity it contains a multitude of basic nutritious and locally accessible foods that can be combined for a variety of different meals -- always with an eye to giving growing students the fuel they need to grow and thrive in their schooldays. There is even included a selection of recipes designed for the sickroom when students are ill and need extra care for their health. A research-rich compendium. Near Fine. John Haywood unknown‎

‎[Cuba]: [Engineering]: [Education]: [Pennsylvania]: Guitart, Magdalena Sofia‎

‎El Album de Mi Padrino Album of My Godfather manuscript cover title‎

‎Various locations in Cuba and Pennsylvania: contents ca 1973. 25 leaves totaling 40pp. illustrated with thirty black-and-white and sepia-toned photographs with detailed manuscript captions plus seven large clippings from school publications and six additional ephemeral items. Oblong folio. Black cloth with alligator-patterned cloth on front board with manuscript title below a drawn representation of a small pennant for Lehigh University. Covers worn frayed and chipped alligator-style cloth curling a bit along fore edge. A few items loose from adhesive and a few with small tears scattered spotting and soiling. Overall very good condition with fascinating materiality. A lovingly-compiled photograph album and memorial book created by a young woman named Magdalena Sofia Guitart in tribute to her godfather Rafael Genó a Cuban engineer who studied at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Juan Rafael Genó Rizo was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1883. A doctoral thesis on Cuban architecture found online deems him one of the premiere Art Deco architects of Santiago and the only one to obtain a degree abroad. Genó graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Lehigh in 1909 and from the University of Havana in 1913. He died in Miami Florida in 1973.

This doting scrapbook was compiled and heavily captioned in Spanish which we hereafter present in translation as a "Memorial which with love and pride I dedicate to my godfather and some of his works; a pale reflection of all the good he has done in his life" by Magdalena Sofia Guitart who was born in 1936 in Santiago and arrived in Miami in 1958. She includes photos of Genó as a baby and a boy of 11 "From a very young age as you can see here my godfather was a little gentleman" as well as in uniform alongside Mexican and Costa Rican comrades at Pennsylvania's Wayne Field. She lauds his "triumphs" and "genius" in "thousands of battles." Genó likely came to the United States following the Spanish-American War during the growth of Cuban immigration resulting from increased American attention of the island country. All of the content in the album is artfully presented within decorative rules or floral borders providing an unusual flair to the presentation. The book displays not only the hand-drawn Lehigh pennant on the cover but also large artistic renditions of the campus and an internal shot of its library clipped from school publications and comparing views from 1873 1909 and 1933 the relevance of Lehigh at the later date is unclear.

Additional photographs and decorative designs share the story as "our engineer" returns to Cuba and "begins to demonstrate his knowledge" in the mines of Ponupo. Soon "his hard work integrity and honesty led him to be chosen" for other feats of engineering including "la Iglesia church Los Desamparados constructed by my godfather 1932" and a train terminal in Guantánamo. Images and a photographic clipping laud his renovations of "Colegio La Salle" in 1937. There are also six photos and a clipping showing Genó's work on the altar for the Eucharistic Congress held in Santiago in 1936 during which the original statue of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre Patroness of Cuba was granted a canonical coronation by Pope Pius XI. The album also holds a clipping naming Genó as president of the Board of Directors of Santiago's Urban Property Center an inauguration ribbon and brochure for the Municipal Food Market in 1950 with which he was also involved and photos of the celebrated engineer later in life.

A captivating and carefully-assembled homage created by a Cuban immigrant to the United States honoring a loved one who was educated in Pennsylvania and then returned to his home country to serve as a noted engineer during the first half of the 20th century. contents ca unknown‎

‎[Design – Higher Education – New York City] Unknown Designer‎

‎Poster Invitation to a Cooper Union Alumni Event Signed by Alum Lou Dorfsman‎

‎New York City 1968. 20 x 28 inches. Folded with some tears at folds slightly wrinkled; inscribed “Sam – / You must come! / Send money / Lou Dorfsmanâ€. Very good plus. An invitation to the “Recooperation Baths†which seems to be an annual get-together for Cooper Union alumni. Cooper Union was founded in 1859 by business magnate Peter Cooper to offer a tuition-free education in practical areas such as architectural drawing shorthand and the like. No longer free Cooper Union now consists of three schools: art architecture and engineering. Graphic designer Lou Dorfsman 1918–2008 who inscribed this poster with a message for “Sam†graduated from Cooper Union in 1939. He would serve on its board of directors and as this poster states on its Alumni Committee. More famously Dorfsman was the art director and later creative director at CBS where he designed not just programming advertisements but also sets and the CBS headquarters’ interior. The poster promises alumni “an evening of gayety jollity merriment entertainment swimming dancing drinking dining†at the Woolworth Building in Tribeca – probably at its private basement swimming pool. unknown‎

‎[DIDEROT (Denis)]‎

(Adams, LG4. Niklaus, L3. Tchemerzine-Scheler, I, 925 note rajoutée). Papier bruni et roussi par endroit. Bon exemplaire entièrement non rogné.‎

‎[DIDEROT (Denis)]‎
