London: James and John Knapton et al. 1722. Hardcover. Maps engravings. Folio. Two large volumes in original full leather bindings. Title pages are printed in red and black with an elegant full-page copper engraving of Camden as the frontispiece of the first volume. There are 50 double-page maps of the English counties Ireland Scotland and 'the Islands'; six of the maps are folding. There are also twelve large full-page engravings and numerous smaller engravings in the text. There is a comprehensive index and the errata page is present. A previous owner has reinforced the hinges with linen-like binding tape. The boards are quite worn and rubbed but a competent bookbinder could restore both bindings. The contents are remarkable clean with only occasional foxing and a few stained pages. The maps by the cartographer Robert Morden and which are usually removed and sold individually are all in excellent condition. Overall a good set. William Camden 1551-1623 was an English antiquary and historian who during the reign of Queen Elizabeth travelled throughout England collecting material for 'Britannia' which was first published in 1586. Initially written in Latin it is a survey of the British islands; its archaeology geography institutions monetary system and inhabitants 'chiefly intended for the instruction of foreigners' or so Gibson states in his Preface to this edition. It was first translated into English in 1610 probably under Camden's direction see Ency. Brit. 11th vol. V p. 101. Gibson's revision was first published in 1695. Our set is the undated 'Second Edition' but by comparing particulars with available bibliographical resources we believe it was published in 1722. Printing and the Mind of Man 101. September 21 1905. 1905. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink filling both sides of a sheet of cream-colored 6-1/4 inch high by 4- 1/2 inch wide paper. Signed "Argyll". There is some very minor soiling to the letter with a small area of light creasing to the top edge. There is an ink blot to one word on the first side. Folded once for mailing. Very good. <p>Argyll writes about his wife's health: "I am sorry to say that my wife is in a state of health which the Doctors say will become serious unless she stops exhausting functions. Winter journeying must be avoided as far as possible so that more expeditions like that to Leeds are prohibited."<p>John Campbell 9th Duke of Argyll 1845-1914 usually better known by the courtesy title Marquess of Lorne was the fourth Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. In 1871 he married Princess Louise the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria the first time since 1515 that a daughter of the sovereign had married a subject of the crown. When his Canadian appointment was announced there was great excitement throughout Canada at the idea of having a royal resident in Rideau Hall though the press disapproved. Lord Lorne was intensely interested in Canada and Canadians and he and his wife made many lasting contributions to Canadian society especially to the arts and sciences. A number of Canadian places were named in honor of Lorne and his wife. September 21, 1905. unknown

March 1869. 1869. Good. - A few words boldly penned in black ink on a sheet of cream paper 3-3/8 inches high by 7 inches wide. The paper has been mounted on a piece of card. Signed "Argyll / March 1869." The paper has been folded 4 times for mailing and there is some creasing to it from the mounting. Good. <p>Argyll is sending a female correspondent his autograph.<p>Scottish peer George Campbell 8th Duke of Argyll 1823-1900 was a close associate of Queen Victoria's consort Prince Albert. He served as Lord Privy Seal in Lord Aberdeen's cabinet 1852-1855 and then as Postmaster General in Lord Palmerston's first cabinet 1855-1858. From 1859 to 1866 he was again Lord Privy Seal first in the second Palmerston administration and then under the Earl of Russell. In December 1868 he was appointed Secretary of State for India under Gladstone. In this role his refusal to promise support against the Russians to the Emir of Afghanistan helped lead to the Second Afghan War. Argyll was also an author on scientific matters especially evolution and economics. He was a leader of the scholarly opposition to Darwin an important economist and an institutionalist approaching the study of politics by focusing on formal institutions of government.
