Fox Hunting Unkeneling Plate 1; Breaking Cover Plate 2; In Full Cry Plate 3; The Death Plate 4
London 1830. Aquatints coloured by hand. A fine complete series of four anonymous prints of hunting scenes possibly after the Alkens.

The style and naming of these prints suggests an Alken origin for the series. Siltzer records a number of series by the Alken family in which the first plate is titled "Unkennelling." This title appears to be unique to them and supports the supposition that the present series are after the Alkens. Henry Thomas Alken was born into what became an artistic dynasty. He studied under the miniature painter J. T. Barber and exhibited his first picture a miniature portrait at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. From about 1816 onwards he "produced an unending stream of paintings drawings and engravings of every type of field and other sporting activity. He is best remembered for his hunting prints many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s.To many sporting art is "Alken" and to describe his work or ability is quite unnecessary." Granary along the Thames
1820. Watercolor and graphite on wove paper laid down to board 7 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches 190 x 267 mm the full sheet. Uniform toning and minor attenuation. A wonderful plein-air landscape likely a preparatory painting for a larger planned work. A scene reminiscent of Cotman and Constable the image is of an industrial riverbank where goods were transferred from water to land and vice versa. Moored along a jetty is a Thames Sailing Barge identifiable by its iconic reddish-brown sprit sail. These flat-bottomed barges were perfectly adapted to the Thames Estuary with its shallow waters and narrow tributary rivers. unknown

Pen and ink and wash on cream wove paper 5 x 3 3/4 inches 128 x 95mm the full sheet. In excellent condition with minor toning and some light scattered soiling on the verso. Hero is shown holding a torch to guide her lover Leander as he swims across the strait from Abydos each night to be with her. Sarah Whitehead; The Bank Nun or the Lady in Black
London 1820. Lithograph with handcoloring in watercolor 9 x 6 1/2 inches 230 x 165 mm full margins. Light pencil inscriptions in the lower margins which are largely illegible. Light handling wear and some surface soiling otherwise in good condition with beautiful saturated watercolor work in the area of the subject's face. Whitehead's brother Philip was employed by the Bank of England from 1797 to 1810. During his employment at the Bank Philip Whitehead "adopted an extravagant lifestyle" and evidence came to light that he had defrauded Robarts & Co. by "forging an acceptance to a Bill." He was charged with forgery in 1811 and executed on 29 January 1812. The news of her brother's conviction was kept from his sister Sarah as long as possible. Learning of the execution Sarah Whitehead's mental health became unstable and she began to visit the Bank daily asking if Phillip was there. This continued until 1818 when the Directors offered Whitehead a financial grant on the condition that she stopped coming to the bank. Whitehead wore black crepe clothing which was a sign of mourning and as a result became known as the "Black Nun." To this day Whitehead's ghost reputedly haunts the Bank of England as well as the area on Threadneedle Street nearby. The myth of Whitehead's ghost appears in the poem New Year Letter by W. H. Auden. unknown
