St Peter's School Magazine. Conducted by Members of St Peter's Collegiate School Adelaide. A broken run of eight issues from Number 86 May 1914 to Number 102 December 1919
Adelaide: W.K. Thomas & Co. Printers 1914. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Adelaide W.K. Thomas & Co. Printers 1914 to 1919. Octavo eight issues ranging between 48 and 80 pages plus plates in some of them. Several of the plates reproduce photographs relating to Australians in the war including a folding panorama of North Beach Anzac and several snapshots taken in the field. Title-wrappers slightly worn and marked and two issues have minimal expert conservation; minor signs of age and use but overall in very good condition. Spanning the First World War this run offers powerful insights into the effects of the war on the school community. Among the usual sporting fixtures and school news are first-hand accounts of important actions sent back to Australia by 'old boys' on active service and numerous short obituaries. Recurring sections include a nominal roll of former pupils in uniform details of their awards and medals and an ever-growing roll of the wounded missing and killed. Particularly noteworthy are accounts of: 1 The Gallipoli landings from several soldiers; 2 The Battle of Cocos; 3 Light Horse actions in the Palestine; 4 Naval actions in the Persian Gulf; and 5 Trench warfare on the Western Front. The names of decorated old scholars appear regularly including Arthur Blackburn VC. <p>The ties of the Old School seem to have been strong even on the battlefield. In the obituary for Lieutenant Eric W. Talbot 10th Battalion it is noted that 'On April 24th 1915 the night before the landing he sat with Col. Price Weir who made use of his draughtsmanship to prepare the landing plans. In the attack at dawn he first had command of scouts and being allowed to choose his men he selected a team entirely of old "Saints"' Number 90 page 61. <p>The issues present in this run are Number 86 May 1914 Number 90 August 1915 Number 92 August 1916 Number 94 May 1917 Number 95 August 1917 Number 98 August 1918 Number 101 September 1919 and Number 102 December 1919. The Summer School offered in addition to language courses courses in "library economy" geology physical education and other subjects. A 1901 brochure describes the Summer School of Library Economy also known as Fletcher Library School as a distinct program developed by William I. Fletcher. By 1906 the program was defunct. Rare with only a single other recorded copy Brown "A Paradise of Dainty Devices" is comprised of over 100 pages of original poetry and prose by students at Mademoiselle Ruel's School in Manhattan in 1894. It was compiled by and privately printed for L.C. Baker Professor of Rhetoric and attributes each piece to the students via an index with their pseudonyms in the index: Boston Dido Vernon Van Flic Donovan Meredith Hooker and Pshaw. Subjects of the student's pieces include nature friendship school death dreaming Venice Santa Claus and more. There is also a poem about each student titled with their pseudonyms pp. 46-53 and revealing a little about each of their personalities. Pleasant Georgia is named for the plantation that was built by Solomon Graves beginning in 1819. His land holdings totaled over 7500 acres at one point. The original plantation home which still exists was built in 1835. The land remained in the Graves family until the final 426 acres were sold in 1958. In the early 1980s 450 acres of the former plantation not including the 22 acres immediately surrounding the original plantation home were sold to a speculator/developer who had been assembling land at Interstate 20 interchanges east of Atlanta. Approx. 28 pages filled with neat ink manuscript entries illustrated with four small original sepia photos and a hand-drawn folded map tipped to inside of front cover. Covers a little worn contents age-toned but entirely legible.<br /> <br /> § A delightfully detailed record of an amusingly rushed school trip to Ireland made by an English schoolboy in 1913. The boys and several masters departed from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire it seems likely they attended Wycliffe College prep school and travelled by train to Fishguard in Wales and from there by boat to Rosslare Harbour in Country Wexford Ireland. Then by train char-a-banc a governess cart ponies and finally boats they tore across the south of Ireland to Killarney and back in a single day. The dutiful author of the journal prepares for the trip with several lists: "General time-table" "List of required articles" including "change of socks.cup soup-plate. rug if room" "Things to be noticed" Waterford Harbour Mountains Lakes Cattle Grazing. and a very thorough plan for "Meals" cornflakes chocolate bananas squashed fly biscuits. The journal itself is neatly written and full of detail particularly of the various vehicles Irish trains get a thorough review and his glimpses of "real Ireland". Four small mounted photos show a bridge in Kerry viewed from a boat Ross Castle "A Jaunting Bar" a kind of horse-drawn carriage and happily "the Author" who appears to be in his early teens. The star of the journal is a large folding map of the trip carefully hand-drawn and keyed and mounted inside the front cover. unknown

He served as the Director from 1937 to 1957 making him the longest-serving director in the school's history. .The personal copy of Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan 1905–1990 who was a Pakistani diplomat and the country’s first female governor.She was born Sheila Irene Pant on 13 February 1905 in Almora British India today’s India to a Brahmin family who had converted to Christianity two generations prior.Academically brilliant she graduated from the University of Lucknow in 1927 with bachelor’s degrees in economics and theology. She obtained a double master’s degree in economics and sociology in 1929. In 1931 she became professor of economics at Indraprastha College in Delhi where she met her future husband lawyer Liaquat Ali Khan when he visited to deliver a lecture on law.The couple married in 1932 despite her family’s objection. The bride converted to Islam and took the name Begum Ra’ana. She became involved with the Muslim League devoting herself to creating political consciousness among the Muslim women in British India.After the Partition in 1947 Liaquat Ali Khan became Pakistan’s first prime minister. As the first First Lady of Pakistan Begum Ra’ana founded or helped establish organisations that uplifted women’s rights and women’s public role such as the Pakistan Women’s National Guard PWNG the Women’s Naval Reserves and All Pakistan Women’s Association APWA. A PAINTING OF "DEVIL KIYOMASA" & "KONISHI YUKINAGA" AS THEY SUBDUED THE KOREAN K.
Japan n.d. ca 1830. A superb scroll painting on silk 39.5 cm. wide by 233 cm. long painting size: 29.5 x 185cm. fine mounting pale silk chrysanthemum patterned border flawless flawless excellent pastel colors excellent condition.RARE! THIS IS A GREAT AND STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL HAND-PAINTED SCROLL THE SUBJECT: Kato Kiyomasa 1562-1611 was the son of Kiyotada a relative of Hideyoshi Toyotomi and served him and distinguished himself as one of the seven most famous warriors of that time by his heroic acts at the Battle of Shizugadatake. . During the invasion of Korea he followed Yukinaga Konishi -1600 to Pusan and on to Seoul in 1592 where he fought so fiercely that the Koreans named him "Devil Kiyomasa." Yukinaga was a Christian warrior & retainer of Hideie Ukita and was appointed Lord of Settsu by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. . Hideyoshi appointed these two to spearhead the Korean invasion with Yukinaga the commander. The plan was to launch waves of army corps by ship across the 56 mile wide Tsushima straits to Pusan. Some 300000 fighting men a truly serious force embarked. The first force of 9200 Samurai armed with matchlocks bows and swords set out. Upon landing they rapidly advanced North up the peninsula taking out Korean castles and subduing the regions through power of force. They advanced to Seoul as the armies divided into two parts each racing to see who would enter Seoul first. . At Cho-ryung pass they united then both advanced on Seoul & took the castle as the Korean King and his entourage fled over the river at Imjin where the Koreans up their valiant effort to check the Japanese. This is a most magnificent painting of both Kiyomasa and Yukinaga as each holds a Naginada while the Korean King prepares to rides a black steed effecting his escape while being protected by a retainer who also holds an elaborate Naganada with the Imperial banner. THE ARTIST AND PAINTING SCHOOL: . This work was done in the Utagawa school style and was likely painted by Utagawa Kuniyoshi or one of his star pupils. It was painted in the "Ukiyo-e" style similar to that of a color woodblock print. . It is painted in a firm solid confident strong hand this work is executed with most impressive brush strokes style & manner expressing the Bushido spirit celebrating triumph over the Koreans. Marvelous detail to the whole work renders this a major piece. Skillfully drawn & painted on silk which is the most difficult medium to control ink flow this work is flawless and a fine example worthy of display in any Tokunoma. . Blue stitched wrs. very good 6 vol.set Chuban or 12 x 18 cm. very good 111 double folded leaves 23 b.w. illustrations many are hand tinted around the genit- alia wood block printed on hand-made paper minor old worm damage but properly mended. This set was likely illustrated by a very skilled Utagawa Kuniyoshi school artist. Since it was common for artists not to sign erotic book one can not know the exact artist name. The lavishly illustrated text is a good example of a skillful hand and illustrator. While there is no colophon which is also usual for erotic books a cyclical date is found in volume one for 1826. The story seems to be about Tokuseru a girl who has various affairs with several lovers. In one illustration she is shown asle- ep in a dream-state with an image floating above her. In this she is with her favorite lover Tokushichi who is making love to her. She is shown sleeping with her hand on an erotic book with Chirishi paper to wipe the aftermath of love-making while her cat looks on. She has been stimu- lated by looking at the erotic book and then her lover appe- ared in her dream. Another shows her being raped in the river by two boat boatman. Others show her with her favorite Tokushichi and other lovers. In one very dark midnight scene she is found making love to her lover while an unin- vited guest stumbles into their room by error. Contained in a period paper covered slipcase. unknown

He was also listed one of the ten most popular boys "Uglymen" in school his senior year. Thirteenth Report contains a typed letter laid in loose from the same. Holls was the Director of the Institution and on the Board of Managers. Reports cover from May 1 1875 to May 1 of each of the following years through 1879. The Wartburg Orphans' Farm School was founded in 1866 serving children who had lost parents during the Civil War.
