Phoenix May 1918: Phoenix Union High School. Octavo. 231pp. The earliest recorded copies in the Arizona Newspaper Project and OCLC are in the 1930's. Much on this item dedicated to those classmates who had gone to fight in World War I. The opening poem is dedicated to the 28th. Besides giving accounts of the different departments there is a nice description of Jefferson Street when it was poorly lit in the first decade of the 20th Century. A later patriotic poem which notes that the Patriots of Phoenix High have "jacked old "Uncle Sammy" to bring justice "to the Hun". It goes on to say they did this by buying liberty bonds. It lists 185 of their older classmates who served in World War I four of whom died in the conflict. The school did not open in the Fall until December 16 because of the influenza crisis. Also there are large ads for some of the well-known Phoenix business some with a patriotic note such as Donofrios which suggests that while "you are thinking about that soldier Boy send him a box of their Cactus Candy." Phoenix AZ 1921. Paperback. Very Good. frontis photos 196p. Softcover in original wrapper. 28 x 20 cm. Covers somewhat soiled and worn with edges frayed and chipped. Contents sound and clean with many penciled and inked signatures on many of the pages. This copy appears to have belonged to Maude D. Stewart who is identified and pictured in this volume as the Assistant Registrar of the high school. While segregation was not required by law the African American students had been confined beginning in 1914 in a separate "Department of Colored Children" with one teacher for all either in the basement of the school or in separate nearby buildings. Pages 88-91 in the Annual are devoted to that Department. The group picture shows 23 students. Three were Seniors. A separate segregated school for African Americans Phoenix Union Colored High School renamed Carver High School in 1943 was built in an industrial area near Black residential areas and opened in 1926. James Rosser a talented football and track athlete. had first entered high school in 1916 but "could not play on the football team at that time." He enlisted in the army in 1918 and served in the 10th Cavalry at Fort Huachuca where he played left half-back on the regimental team. When Rosser returned to Phoenix Union after the war Rosser was allowed to play on the high school team and seems to have been one of the most important members of the team although he is not one of the 17 individual players pictured on the pages devoted to the football team. paperback

Phoenix: Phoenix Union High School 1921. Quarto. 196 pages. The growing student body now is involved not only in far more sporting events but producing plays. Page 88ff show the Department for Colored children where a class of thirty-four African American children are taught separately with three seniors graduating. James Benton signed under his photograph. There are several other autographs throughout. He is listed as member of the Latin club and playing basketball but this was probably restrict to other African Americans in his rather small class. The Arizona Republican of May 21 1921 proudly noted there were three "colored" graduating whereas the highest number in previous years was one. Midcentury Photo Album of a High Schooler in Upstate New York
Poughkeepsie 1948-1951. Very good . Oblong 16mo. Commercial string-tied album white boards. 225 gelatin-silver prints 2.5" by 3.25" corner-mounted on black paper with captions in white ink. Apparently complete. Very good plus. Mild touches of wear along page edges; many captions a bit smudged; else clean and sound. <br/><br/>A evocative collection of photographs taken and compiled by Robert H. Tucker while he was a student at MIT of his high school career at Poughkeepsie's Arlington High School where he graduated with the class of 1950. Tucker called this album his "own yearbook" and it indeed shares a great deal with conventional yearbook style with humorous captions "A test Oh no!" and attention to a wide range of faculty staff and student activities both in and out of the classroom. Subjects include track meets baseball games cheerleaders teachers at the blackboard students at work in the library a special event including donkey-riding in the gym commencement and other activities. More than mere yearbook however the album reveals Tucker to be a natural photographer with an eye for both composition and POV; his sports shots are especially vibrant often crisply capturing athletes in the midst of the action. A detailed album capturing the dawn of the post-war American teenager. Indeed quintessentially so; we are tempted to call this an almost Platonically ideal example of the high school album. hardcover books

Acquaforte, 1878, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a destra. "A. Piccinni / Roma 1878" seguita dal titolo sotto "L'Avaro". Magnifica prova, impressa su carta cina applicata, con margini, in perfetto stato di conservazione. Un vecchio avaro che indossa un lungo cappotto appoggiato su uno scrittoio aperto, con la mano appoggiata su un mucchio di monete. Pittore e incisore italiano soprannominato “il re dei disegnatori”. La più grande vocazione dell’artista è, infatti, la grafica. Dal 1860 studia a Napoli all’Istituto di Belle Arti sotto la guida di maestri come Domenico Morelli (Napoli 1826 – 1901), Filippo Palizzi (Vasto 1818 – Napoli 1889), Tommaso Aloysio Juvara (Messina 1809 – Roma 1875) e Francesco Pisante (Napoli 1830 – 1889). Qui egli studia la tecnica dell’acquaforte d’invenzione e aderisce al verismo di matrice palizziana. Agli inizi del 1873 si trasferisce a Roma e frequenta i corsi di incisione alla Calcografia Nazionale. Tra il 1878 e il 1880 è a Parigi presso l’editore Cadart e proprio questa parentesi parigina colloca il Piccinni tra gli artisti europei fautori della rinascita dell’acquaforte originale. Sperimentatore delle nuove possibilità legate al mezzo fotografico è tra i primi in Italia a impiegare la fotoincisione tra il 1874 ed il 1886. I temi affrontati da Piccinni dimostrano l’attenzione costante verso i gesti più semplici della quotidianità della vita, gli individui vengono rappresentati come modelli di categorie sociali. Magnificent proof, impressed on applied China paper, with margins, in perfect condition. An old miser wearing a long coat leaning on an open desk, his hand resting on a pile of coins. Piccinni was one of the European artists who were responsible for the rebirth of the original etching. Experimenter of the new possibilities related to the photographic medium, he is among the first in Italy to use the photoengraving between 1874 and 1886. The themes addressed by Piccinni show the constant attention to the simplest gestures of everyday life, individuals are represented as models of social categories. A. Petrucci, “A. Imp. 56 B.ard Haussmann. Paris”. Questa lastra fu pubblicata su L’Illustration Nouvelle, album edito dalla Maison Cadart nel marzo del 1879. Impressione eccellente con leggero effetto di tono, carta vergata. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Ampi margini oltre la battuta del rame. Il soggetto è riconducibile ad un gruppo di lavori appartenenti alle prime acqueforti di invenzione realizzate dall’artista, tutte hanno per soggetti personaggi e situazioni colti durante il soggiorno romano. In questa stampa vediamo rappresentati dodici spettatori a teatro che si sporgono dalla balconata per osservare meglio la rappresentazione. Grazie a potenti giochi chiaroscurali emergono dallo sfondo scuro e i loro volti indagati minuziosamente sono illuminati dalle luci teatrali della ribalta. Le luci imbiancano anche i due pilastri con capitelli che spezzano l’andamento lineare e prospettico volto a sinistra della superficie della balconata. Proprio l’effetto di luce e il punto di osservazione da sotto in su trasforma i volti in una serie di maschere il che suggerisce un’analisi psicologica dei “tipi da teatro”. Il Piccinni tra gli artisti europei fautori della rinascita dell’acquaforte originale. Sperimentatore delle nuove possibilità legate al mezzo fotografico è tra i primi in Italia a impiegare la fotoincisione tra il 1874 ed il 1886. I temi affrontati da Piccinni dimostrano l’attenzione costante verso i gesti più semplici della quotidianità della vita, gli individui vengono rappresentati come modelli di categorie sociali. Etching, signed and dated in plate at upper left in the image. Beyond image in upper right corner number 470, below lettered "A. Piccinni pinx. et sc," the title and "V.ve A. Cadart Edit. Imp. 56 B.ard Haussmann. Paris." This plate was published in L'Illustration Nouvelle, an album edited by Maison Cadart in March 1879. Excellent impression with slight toning effect, printed on laid paper. Very good condition. Wide margins beyond the platemark. The subject can be traced back to a group of works belonging to the first etchings of invention made by the artist, all have for subjects characters and situations captured during his stay in Rome. In this print we see twelve spectators at the theater who lean out from the balcony to better observe the representation. Thanks to powerful chiaroscuro effects they emerge from the dark background and their meticulously studied faces are illuminated by the theatrical lights of the limelight. The lights also whitewash the two pillars with capitals that break the linear and perspective trend facing left of the surface of the balcony. Just the effect of light and the point of observation from below up turns the faces into a series of masks suggesting a psychological analysis of the "theater types". Piccinni was one of the European artists who were responsible for the rebirth of the original etching. Experimenter of the new possibilities related to the photographic medium, he is among the first in Italy to use the photoengraving between 1874 and 1886. The themes addressed by Piccinni show the constant attention to the simplest gestures of everyday life, individuals are represented as models of social categories. A. Petrucci, “A.
