‎Henry Hallam (1777-1859), English Whig historian [Dr Thomas Arnold (1795-1842), headmaster of Rugby School, and Regius Professor‎

‎Henry Hallam historian responds indignantly to Dr Thomas Arnold's claim that he has made 'false quotations'. Autograph Letter Signed 'Henry Hallam' to Dr Thomas Arnold defending himself against an allegation made in a lecture at Oxford.‎

‎24 Wilton Crescent London. 28 February 1842. 4pp. 4to. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition lightly aged with short closed tears at edges of some folds. An excellent letter indignantly countering what must be the most serious accusation one historian can level against another that of making 'false quotations'. The recipient is not named but from the context is undoubtedly the Headmaster of Rugby School Thomas Arnold who since the previous year had held the Regius Professorship of History at Oxford and would die four months later on 12 June 1842. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir You will not I am certain consider it as a liberty if I address you a few lines on the subject of an allusion last word underlined to a passage in my History of the Middle Ages which I understand you to have made in a recent lecture at Oxford. The great respect which I bear to you will be a sufficient excuse; for in an ordinary case I should have waited for publication of the lecture & made my observations then or not as I might have thought it expedient'. He does not have 'an exact knowledge of what you said concerning me' but assures Arnold of the 'very great annoyance' he felt when 'Dr Buckland i.e. the geologist and cleric William Buckland 1784-1856 some weeks since told me in his jocular language “Dr Arnold has been blowing you up for false quotations'. He did not have 'the slightest notion what was the specific charge' but considered it 'a most serious imputation upon any writer' and subsequently 'obtained some information' from 'Dr. B.' 'vague indeed but enough to make me conjecture that your charge related to the well-known passage in Eligius. This has been confirmed since by a letter which a friend of mine received from Oxford; but the words said to have been used by you are very loosely given from memory. It appears however that you spoke in very handsome terms of my general character as a faithful historian'. Arnold has almost certainly overlooked the fact that 'in the fourth edition of my work & in all that followed I have retracted the error into which I had been led so far as it was an error in the fullest manner; not silently correcting or omitting the passage but leaving it as it stood with a note acknowledging it to be highly exaggerated in consequence of the wrong interpretation which through Mosheim's quotation many besides myself had put upon the original writer's meaning. On reading this note again after several years it appears to me that I have gone to the utmost in saying that the passage quoted by Mosheim ought never to be applied again; for in reality it is one of importance & serves to confirm what Mosheim himself has said though Maclaine & those who followed him went much farther than it would warrant.' He discusses a Latin sentence declaring: 'I need not add that this was no false quotation nor even a garbled one on the part of Mosheim who gave an entire - still less on my part who only quoted him & Robertson.' He ends by declaring his expectation that 'when your lectures go to the press you will do me the justice of taking notice' that he has corrected 'the error into which I had been led'. In conclusion he observes for the purpose of bring his work 'to the public eye it has been absolutely necessary to give modern authorities'. 24 Wilton Crescent [London]. 28 February 1842. unknown‎

‎Henry Montagu Butler. Autograph Letter Signed 'H. Montagu Butler' to 'Mr Maddy' praising choristers from Gloucester Cathedral for ministering to the sick at his hospital and discussing the good works of a nun of All Saints Margaret Street.‎

‎Gloucester. 31 December 1885. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium on mourning paper. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. 'It was indeed a great happiness to see those young choristers finding part of their Christmas happiness in ministering to the invalid little ones. Your work in the Hospital is I am sure a blessed one.' He is drawn to that work by 'the thought of a very dear Sister - a Sister of All Saints Margaret Street London- who is now at the head of a Medical Institution at Bombay.' He recalls that Street was 'for some years employed at University College Hospital and used often to tell us of the little sick ones there & their simple ways.' ‎Henry Montagu Butler headmaster of Harrow School and Master of Trinity College Cambridge. Signed Letter 'H Montagu Butler' written out by a secretary to Professor Langley referring him to one of his works.‎

‎On letterhead of Trinity Lodge Cambridge. 24 August 1904. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition with light signs of age. At head of first page: 'Dictated'. He refers him to 'the second Chapter of the book I published some years ago which deals with the subject on which we conversed the other night at dinner'. The amanuensis has written that the chapter deals with 'some of the reflections on matters ethereal' and Butler has corrected this to 'some reflections on matters Aesthetical'. Butler has also added the words 'more clearly though I fear' after the word 'puts' in the following: 'it puts at much greater length'. He ends by stating that he is sending him a copy of his 'Address'. On letterhead of Trinity Lodge, Cambridge. 24 August 1904. unknown‎

‎HERTZKA Theodor.‎

Scalaire, "Litt. Conj.", IV, 68.‎

‎HERKOMER Hubert von (Waal, 26 maggio 1849 – Budleigh Salterton, 31 marzo 1914)‎

‎Ritratto di vecchio rivolto a destra‎

‎Monotipo o herkomergravure, 1891, firmato e datato sulla lastra in alto a destra Hubert Herkomer '91. Andrew Stevens, American Monotypes from the Baker/Pisano Collection, pp. 3-6). Etching and Mezzotint Engraving: Lectures Delivered at Oxford. New York: Macmillan, 1892; Andrew Stevens, American Monotypes from the Baker/Pisano Collection, Exh. Cat., by Russell Panczenko, Andrew Stevens, and D. Frederick Baker, pp. 3-6. Monotype or herkomergravure, 1891, signed and dated on plate at the upper right Hubert Herkomer ’91. A fine impression, printed on contemporary wove paper, with margins, perfect condition. “Monotype is the most direct print medium. The artist paints on a smooth, impermeable surface, places a blank piece of paper on top of the painting, and applies pressure so that the painted image is transferred onto the paper. […] Through the nineteenth century there was much ingenuity expended on finding a way for printmakers to create editions that were as painterly as monotype. Generally, inventors came up with a special compound that could be applied to the still-wet artist’s painting executed on a copper plate. When the plate was dried and electroplated, it could then be inked like an etched or engraved plate and printed again and again, providing the spontaneity of the monotype, but with the repeatability of other print media. Various inventors came up with similar processes, and by the end of the 1800s three processes were available for those wishing to make a print that had some of the visual qualities of a monotype, but could also be produced in an edition of identical prints: the galvanograph, the electrotint, and the herkomergravure, named after its inventor, Hubert Herkomer (English, 1849–1914). Herkomer was a popular painter of portraits and social genre scenes, and an inveterate experimenter in the arts. William Merritt Chase (American, 1849–1916) introduced Herkomer to the monotype process in 1885. Herkomer developed his process by 1897, but first wrote about it in 1892. It may have been in 1902 that Herkomer returned Chase’s favor by introducing him to the herkomergravure, when Chase next returned to England. The process involved smearing ink onto a copper plate and creating the image with fingers and/or brushes, as with the monotype process. Then the plate was dusted with a combination of special powders, dried, and electroplated. The resulting image was a quasi-monotype” (cfr. Andrew Stevens, American Monotypes from the Baker/Pisano Collection, pp. 3-6). Sir Hubert von Herkomer was a German-born British artist, and also a pioneering film-director and composer. Though a very successful portraitist, especially of men, he is mainly remembered for his earlier works that took a realistic approach to the conditions of life of the poor.   Bibliografia Herkomer, Hubert. Etching and Mezzotint Engraving: Lectures Delivered at Oxford.
