French school, early eighteenth century [?]
Antique drawing A cupid within a decorative frame / Allegory of marriage ca. 1710 1 p.
A putto or Cupid holding an arrow in his right hand and holding the left index to his lips. Within a highly decorative frame surmounted by a flame. At the bottom are Hymen and Cupid attributes the lit torch and the quiver. As the design is punched throughout it is likely it was used for an applique or for decorating a majolica plate possibly for a marriage given its iconography. Interestingly the design was folded in two as the right section was reputed more suitable to be copied and actually it is the most decorated half.NL Een putto of Cupido met een pijl in zijn rechterhand en de linker wijsvinger naar zijn lippen. Drawing on paper pen and brown ink washed in gray; total: ca. 200 x 103 mm; some staining traces of handling; overall in very good condition. Mounted on cardboard passepartout. unknown

Portrait of a young Chevalier wearing the Collar of the Order of Saint Michael his hand resting on his sword hilt.
French School late 16th century. Oil on panel 655 x 470 mm octagonal; originally part of a larger work; a vertical split running the length of the panel has an old expert repair on the reverse; housed in a recent frame. A beguiling sixteenth-century French portrait of a member of the Order of Saint Michael. The Order of Saint Michael Ordre de Saint-Michel was founded by Louis XI of France in 1469 as a response to the Burgundian Order of the Golden Fleece. It was the highest chivalric Order in France for over a century until the introduction of the Ordre de Saint Esprit in 1578. Its members included the French monarchy and the upper echelons of the French nobility as well as many important figures of the period such as Cesare Borgia James V of Scotland Edward VI of England Henry Stuart Lord Darnley and Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester on whom the Order was bestowed by the French monarch of the time. The Order was dedicated to the Archangel Michael whose image was engraved on the gold medallion presented to every member. However the Order's collar or chain which features twelve enamelled gold scallop shells - symbols of holy pilgrimage - remained its most prestigious insignia right up until 1830 when the Order was dissolved. Only three authenticated examples of the Collar of the Order of Saint Michael have survived: two in Dutch collections Rijksmuseum and Paleis Het Loo and one in France Musée de la Légion d'honneur. unknown

Freundlich, Charles L. ; AMSCO School Publications
Workbook In Latin: First Year
Amsco School Publications New York ©1963 1963. Soft cover. Very Good. vi 250 pages : illustrations ; 28 cm 1 answer key 98 pages ; 17 cm ; stiff paper wrappers ; ISBN 9780877205531 0877205531 OCLC 9433961 ; For grades 7-12 ; Contains most of the authors' Review text in Latin first year in workbook format. Uses pattern exercises and audio-lingual practice to review material. ; Workbook in Latin First Year is a valuable supplement to any first-year Latin textbook. Replete with copious and varied exercises it provides the teacher with handy assignments and the student with a means of drill and self-evaluation. Starting with a unit on verbs the most important element in any sentence the Workbook takes up in progressive lessons other parts of speech idioms grammar passages for comprehension derivation and word study culture vocabularies and finally specimen examinations. Review and mastery exercises permit the teacher to pause at strategic places and test large areas. The optional lessons deal with verb forms omitted in some first-year textbooks and may be used at the discretion of the teacher. In keeping with the modern trend to stress the audio-lingual approach in foreign languages the author has incorporated in the Workbook a section on oral classroom conversation with exercises. This section can profitably be used both for motivation and as a teaching device. The enterprising teacher with this material at hand will be able to create interest in the classroom to bring life to Latin and at the name time to teach proper pronunciation vocabulary Latin word order and grammatically correct sentences. The Workbook is so designed that the teacher may assign any topic in which the class needs drill without following strictly the order of the units. Perhaps the greatest value of the Workbook lies in the organization of the material. Most textbooks have the forms grammar culture derivation etc. scattered throughout the book. The Workbook has assembled all this material into convenient units subdivided into lessons each an entity in itself. The table of contents permits the teacher to find instantly any topic in its entirety. The teacher of a second-year Latin class also will find this book a very convenient means of reviewing the first-year work particularly after a summer vacation. For drilling for assigning work. for reviewing for testing for oral work-for all there purposes the teacher will find this Workbook a veritable thesaurus. ; foxed else VG

Amsco School Publications, New York, ©1963 paperback
