Muir, John) Pupils of the John Muir School
THE JOHN MUIR BOOK
Seattle: John Muir School & Press of The Co-operative Printing Company 1925. First Edition. Soft cover. Good. 1st printing. Printed greenish-gray small 8vo wraps. 71pp. This is a rare little book published by John Muir School in Seattle to honor by way of a pageant the great naturalist. Contents "Leaves of the John Muir Book" consist of following the Acknowledgments: Introduction by Principal Jessie Lockwood. A second introductory page typeset & printed on a sheet slightly smaller than the book's dimensions and tipped in is titled "The Writing of the John Muir Pageant". It is dated March 1928 Foreword Original prose and verse by the pupils inspired by the study and production of the Pageant Quotations from the writings of John Muir and Appreciations of John Muir by different authors. The pageant section lists part episodes music characters. In pencil on the ffep is a four-line inscription "Compliments of / Miss Jessie Lockwood / Prin. John Muir / School. Mar. 1929." We do not know if the handwriting is Ms. Lookwood's. HistoryLinkdotorg says this of the school in part: "A new school opened in 1910. It was named York School after the neighborhood. Residents of the neighborhood petitioned the Seattle School Board in September 1915 to rename the school John L. Wilson. The board chose to delay making any change. In 1921 Principal Jessie Lockwood was asked to select a new name for the school. She chose to honor Scottish-born naturalist John Muir who founded the Sierra Club in 1892 and was instrumental in establishing Yellowstone National Park and the National Park Service. Part of her motivation for selecting Muir was the hope that students would develop a love of nature and a desire to conserve natural beauty." On the back cover is a sizable white residue - not really an embedded stain. It occupies a somewhat small part of the page overall yet is a blemish that detracts. A very small perhaps one-half quarter or more size of the same whitish blemish on the upper fore edge of the front cover. Hinges sound. As noted rare. This book belongs in any serious we believe library on John Muir. John Muir School & Press of The Co-operative Printing Company unknown

MULLER Jan Harmensz (Amsterdam 1571 - 1628)
Il Martirio di San Sebastiano
Bulino, 1600 circa, in basso a sinistra: 'Joannes ab Achen invenetor. / Joan. Mullerus sculpsit"; in basso a destra: "H Muller [HM intrecciato] excud:". Sei righe latine, su tre colonne nel margine in basso: Cum fera tela sinus rimantur pectoris altus / / Et lacerata tua membra crucis madent / / Tum dulcis tibi .... Bibliografia The New Hollstein (Muller Dynasty) part 2.98.23 ii/iv; The New Hollstein (Aachen) 114.44 ii/iv; Bartsch, III.273.23. Engraving, 1600 circa, arched plate, lettered in plate, lower left: 'Joannes ab Achen invenetor. / Joan. Mullerus sculpsit.'; lower right: 'H Muller [HM entwined] excud:'. Six lines Latin in three columns in margin below: Cum fera tela sinus rimantur pectoris altus / / Et lacerata tua membra crucis madent: / / Tum dulcis tibi .... Example in the second state, of four, according Filedt Kok. After a painting by Hans von Aachen in the Jesuit church of St Michaels Hofkirche. Magnificent proof, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with "Strasbourg shield" watermark (similar to The New Hollstein, Muller II, p. 308), trimmed at the copper or with small margins, paper creases visible at the bottom, minimal restorations in the bottom lettering, otherwise in good condition. Sebastian is bound to a tree with one of his arms raised over his head and tied at the wrist to a broken limb; a group of archers aim their weapons at him; a winged putti holding a palm and wreath hovers overhead. Literature The New Hollstein (Muller Dynasty) part 2.98.23 ii/iv; The New Hollstein (Aachen) 114.44 ii/iv; Bartsch, III.273.23.

MULLER Jan Harmensz (Amsterdam 1571 - 1628)
Lot e le figlie
Bulino, 1600 circa, firmata in lastra nell’immagine, in basso a destra: “Joannes Muller. fecit”, at left: “Harmannus Muller. excud. Amstelodamj”. Obheruber (cfr. Die Stilistiche Entwicklung im Werk Bartholomaeus Spranger, p. 294 n. 93), ha evidenziato l'inesattezza di quest’attribuzione. Bibliografia Bartsch, III.286.64; The New Hollstein, II, p. p.177, 64 II/IV; Filedt Kok (Print Quarterly, september 1994) pp. 250 -251; Hollstein, XIV, 10. Engraving, 1600 circa, signed below in the image, at right: “Joannes Muller. fecit”; at left “Harmannus Muller. excud. Amstelodamj”. A fine impression, printed with tone on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the borderline and pasted on 19th Century mounting, good condition. This print, though stylistically closely related to Spranger, must have been designed by Muller himself. The drawing for this print, signed “JMuller fecit”, is attributed by Bartsch (III, p. 284, n. 64) to Spranger. Obheruber (cf. Die Stilistiche Entwicklung im Werk Bartholomaeus Spranger, p. 294 n. 93), has pointed out the inaccuracy of the attribution to Spranger. Literature Bartsch, III.286.64; The New Hollstein, II, p. p.177, 64 II/IV; Filedt Kok (Print Quarterly, september 1994) pp. 250 -251; Hollstein, XIV, 10.

MULLER Jan Harmensz (Amsterdam 1571 - 1628)
Ritratto di Bartholomeus Spranger
Bulino, datato in lastra 1597. Sulla cornice ovale: ‘BARTHOLOMAEUS SPRANGER, S. CAES. M. PICTOR CELEBERRIMUS’. Nel cartiglio in basso: ‘NATURAE OMNIPARENTI / PRAESTANTISSIMI EIUS AEMULI IMAGINEM,/INVIDIA GEMENTE/D D/IOANNES AB ACH.S.ITEM/CAES. M. PICTOR / An o 1597’ Nel margine inferior, al centro ‘In perpetuam amici memoriam Joan Mullerus grato lubentique animo aeri incidebat / F.de Wit excudit’. Engraving, dated on plate 1597.On the frame: ‘BARTHOLOMAEUS SPRANGER, S. CAES. M. PICTOR CELEBERRIMUS’ Inscribed on the bottom, on cartouche: ‘NATURAE OMNIPARENTI / PRAESTANTISSIMI EIUS AEMULI IMAGINEM,/INVIDIA GEMENTE/D D/IOANNES AB ACH.S.ITEM/CAES. M. PICTOR / An o 1597’ inscribed on the bottom: ‘In perpetuam amici memoriam Joan Mullerus grato lubentique animo aeri incidebat / F.de Wit excudit’. Bust portrait of Bartholomeus Spranger (1546-1611) in oval frame, flanked by two putti with trumpets, a shield, spear and a helmet. “The oval portrait is based on a model (probably a painting) by Hans von Aachen. Both artists explicitly dedicate the print in friendship to Spranger. During this period Jan Muller had become the chief engraver of the designs by Spranger, the famous court painter of Prague, and it was around now he produced ten engravings, most of a fairly large format, after his designs. Spranger sent his drawn designs to Amsterdam and a number of extant proof impressions reveal that these were sent to Prague for correction. Muller probably did not meet Spranger until the latter’s visit to the Netherlands in 1602. It can be assumed that Hans von Aachen (1552 – 1615), another painter at the Prague court, sent Spranger’s portrait (whether painted or drawn) for Muller to use as a model for his print; the frame, however, was designed by Muller himself. Muller’s traced design for the frame, with the initial design for the portrait engraving attached inside, has been preserved (Amsterdam, Rijkprentenkabinet), and it is possible to follow the making of the print precisely through each successive stage: first the face was engraved in the plate, then the rest of the figure, after which the frame and finally the circumscription were engraved.” F. Kok, Artists Portrayed by Their Friends: Goltzius and His Circle, in Netherlands Quarterly for the History of Art,Vol. 24, pp. 167-168. A fine example printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, in good condition. Le Blanc, 69; F. Kok, Artists Portrayed by Their Friends: Goltzius and His Circle, in Netherlands Quarterly for the History of Art,Vol. 24, pp. 167-168.
