‎[[ART & ILLUSTRATION. ASHCAN SCHOOL] GLINTENKAMP, Hendrik‎

‎Manuscript Sketchbook Documenting Travels in Austria Hungary and Italy 1930‎

‎
Original Manuscript Sketchbook Austria Hungary and Italy: 1930-1931. 23.3x15.3cm: 146 leaves all used but for two preliminary leaves. Green cloth-covered boards decorated by the artist on front cover. Minor external wear. Binding slightly shaken but all leaves still firmly attached. Internally clean. Glintenkamp’s signature to recto of first leaf. One manuscript fragment laid in possibly in Glintenkamp’s hand on letterhead from the hospital where he passed. Near Fine.

Together With… Glintenkamp Henry. A Wanderer in Woodcuts. New York: Farrar & Rinehart 1932. 23.4x16cm: xi 278pp. First Edition. Black cloth-covered boards quarter-bound with tan cloth. Black titling to spine. Silver embossed decoration of one of the woodblock prints to cover. No dustjacket. Endpapers show a map in black and white of the author’s travels. Contains 126 full page woodblock prints with brief description on opposite page; many smaller woodcuts throughout. All present and bright. Moderate foxing and discoloration to spine with ends bumped. Rubbing and wear to edges. Hinges tender and spine cracked at a few gatherings. Better Than Very Good.

Glintenkamp along with his friend and contemporary Stuart Davis was among the foremost disciples of Robert Henri and inherited some of his mentor’s Ashcan mannerisms; but he is perhaps best remembered as one of the original artists of the New York socialist/bohemian magazine The Masses where his drawings appeared regularly between 1912-1917. Glintenkamp worked in a variety of media including paints he was an exhibitor at the 1913 New York Armory Show and woodcuts he is justly well-regarded for his block prints of which he published several volumes late in his career. But it is as an illustrator and social documentarian that Glintenkamp is probably best remembered and it was as a contributor to many left wing publications of the period that he found his firmest footing. Glintenkamp remained a political radical for all of his career and was a member of both the New York chapter of the John Reed Club an organization for radical artists and writers and of the CP–affiliated American Artists Congress.

The sketchbook contains 146 original drawings by Glintenkamp most pen and ink with ink wash but also some gestural sketches as well as more finished works incorporating color pastels. None are signed but nearly all are captioned and dated in the artist's hand. All were accomplished during Glintenkamp’s tour of Austria Hungary and Italy from November 12 1930 to January 1 1931 a trip he would memorialize in his 1932 volume A Wanderer in Woodcuts. Scenes include the expected cityscapes and depictions of local color along with dozens of sensitive portraits and images documenting the life and labor of the ordinary citizens Glintenkamp encountered during his travels. Upon a closer look we found that at least 18 of the finished pictures in A Wanderer in Woodcuts were derived from the sketches here making this the manuscript of sorts – or at least the primary source book – for one of Glintenkamp’s most popular works. A wonderful example of international Ashcan sketches turned into beautiful woodcut prints.
. unknown‎

‎Ba Coiffeur i.e. “The Hairdresserâ€‎

‎
Central Africa ca. 1960s. Oil paint on plywood with applied frame; hanging cord on back. 15¼ x 20 inches. Name in pencil on verso: “Gui Guillermo F. or T. Restleâ€. Light soiling to surface; frame edges lightly rubbed; very good.

A striking signboard employed by a 1960s Central African itinerant barber adorned in a lively and cheerful color scheme.

African barbers and hair salons often displayed distinctive and elaborate trade signs highlighting local artistry and skill. Frequently hand-painted these signs served both practical and artistic purposes representing the culture through a fusion of visuals that portrayed the barber’s offerings and regional values.

"“Such signs first appeared in urban areas to advertise services sometime during the 1930s to 1950s. Oftentimes a portable sign with a handle was hung outdoors while an itinerant barber sets up a chair hanging mirror and a small table for their scissors razor comb and clippers. . With the advent of machine-printing hand-painted barbershop and hairdressing signs—a vibrant form of African folk art in the form of advertising—appear less frequently on shop fronts.†See SFO Museum’s exhibit “Extra ’O’! African Barbershop and Hairdressing Signsâ€"

Painted on a wood panel this handsome example displays six Western hairstyles and their corresponding prices. Beneath a tree’s shade a barber tends to a client draped in a barber cape. An adjacent table holds a mirror against the tree’s trunk alongside a hair pick scissors and a comb.

Notes: Captioned “Ba Coiffeur†in the upper right corner of the image “Coiffeur†is French for barber and “Ba†indicates Lingala spoken in Central Africa encompassing Congo Angola Central African Republic and South Sudan translating to “The Hairdresser.†In 1960 a Central African CFA franc was worth 0.02 French francs after a devaluation. For instance 450 F on the barber’s sign equated to 9 French francs. A French franc in 1960 equaled 20 US cents. Nine French francs amounted to $1.80. A 1960s U.S. haircut cost $1.50–$2.00.
unknown‎

‎[ANGLO-INDIAN SCHOOL]. PUNIR SHABAB.‎

‎Large portrait painting of a Bombay Governor possibly from the Puna region.‎

‎Bombay circa 1860. . Large painting on board signed 'Punir Shabab Bombay' signed in lower left-hand corner gouache on thick board depicting an elegantly robed gentleman seated on an open terrace with a moon-lit countryside and winding river in the background with stars illuminating the sky 600 x 440 mm; some light water-staining and a small section of the top-left corner chipped with loss rubbed and darkened as often; reverse blank in modern frame glazed.
misc23 A very attractive and large portrait of a Governor of Bombay possibly of Parsi heritage apparently executed by a local Indian artist. The large verandah on which the subject is seated features some classical western architectural features including the column and balcony railing. These features paired with the silk embroidered robes and multiple strands of beaded jewellery of the subject signify that the sitter was of high rank and likely governor of the region and land that is disproportionately seen behind him as a vast and luscious landscape. The scene is rather unusually set at night-time with the light of the moon and stars shining against a darkened sky to create a very atmospheric and captivating image.
Bombay, circa 1860. unknown‎

The contents remain clean and crisp throughout. An appealing copy of Arthur Rackham's edition of 'The Ingoldsby Legends' splendidly bound in the Arts and Crafts Movement style by a student or teacher at the Bournville School of Art Birmingham.

The grand hall which housed the Bournville School of Art was the first public building in Bournville the model village founded by the Cadbury family. In line with typical Arts and Crafts Movement ideals and with a specific aim to further the ideas and principles of John Ruskin the school was originally conceived as a social centre for the village offering a practical and artistic education for the community. It became more formalised as a 'School of Arts and Crafts' in 1911 later becoming an art college in the 1920s.

As a city Birmingham served as an important centre of the Arts and Crafts movement with the 'Birmingham Group' of artist-craftsmen cultivating their own distinct style. Predominantly based around the Birmingham School of Art and the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft the leading figures of the group included Joseph Southall Arthur and Georgie Gaskin Bernard Sleigh Maxwell Armfield and Charles Gere.

An uncommon example of a bookbinding emanating from the dynamic atmosphere of Birmingham's Arts and Crafts Movement.
