‎Sans Souci Methodist School in British Guiana‎

‎Eight Letters from Various People connected with this School‎

‎1951. Paperback. Good. All appear to be written in 1951 and all were sent to Rev. Campbell MacRae Lewistall who is identified on a slip laid in one of the envelopes as Founder-teacher Blyden-Lewistall Private School at 314 West 133rd Street in New York City. Some letters are worn; all appear to be complete. Most envelopes present some with stamps. Three of the letters were from Philip Nathaniel King headmaster or head teacher of this Methodist-supported elementary school; one is from his wife; two are from his son; and two are from Mr. King's niece who was also a teacher at the school. All of the letters seem designed to establish contact with Rev. Lewistall who is addressed as Uncle. Some including the letters from King's son thank the New York Uncle for gifts such as an air rifle. The letters picture conditions at the school as far from ideal and make it clear that the the Kings were hoping that their "uncle" in America would provide some financial support. paperback‎

‎Segregated School Systems‎

‎African American Education and Segregated School Systems in Post-Reconstruction North Carolina 1888-1892‎

‎1888. Rowan County Board of Education teacher pay vouchers 1888 and 1892 documenting African American education within the segregated public school system of post-Reconstruction North Carolina. The vouchers record segregated public education and its funding mechanisms through payments to Black teachers approved at the county level. These documents show how African American educators were paid through formally structured systems requiring countersignature by the county superintendent and approval by district committee members.

Two manuscript teacher salary vouchers each approximately 8.5 x 7 inches and written on both sides. The first dated March 26 1888 authorizes payment of $30.00 to Maggie Locke for teaching in "School District No. 4 Rowan County for Colored Race" covering the period from January 3 to March 2 1888 in Atwell Township. The printed form specifies that payment is contingent upon countersignature by the county superintendent and approval by at least two district committee members establishing formal oversight procedures. The verso bears Locke's signed receipt dated March 27 1888 acknowledging payment from county treasurer J. M. McCubbins. The second voucher dated January 16 1892 records payment of $25.00 to Isaac Kerns for teaching in "School District No. 2 Salisbury & No. 2 Prov. Rowan County for Colored Race" with similar requirements for administrative approval prior to disbursement. The verso includes Kerns's signed acknowledgment of payment. Both documents explicitly designate the schools as serving the "Colored Race" indicating the formalized racial segregation embedded within the educational system.

These vouchers document the operation of segregated schooling in the decades following the Civil War when African American education expanded under conditions of systemic underfunding and institutional control. The requirement for multiple authorizations before payment records the bureaucratic regulation of Black teachers' labor while the recorded wages provide quantitative evidence for comparative study of compensation disparities. Produced during a period when access to education for African Americans remained contested these documents contribute to research on Reconstruction-era legacies Jim Crow governance and the role of Black educators in sustaining community institutions. Light wear minor creasing and typical manuscript handling marks; overall very good condition. Documentary record of the administrative structure and lived realities of segregated education in the late nineteenth-century South. unknown‎

‎Tufts Univesity Medical School‎

‎Tufts Medical School Huge Class Portrait with Two Graduating Female Students 1923‎

‎1923. Women's HistoryWomen's EducationWomen in Science and Medicine Tufts Medical School 1923 graduating class portrait featuring two female graduates. Panoramic silver gelatin photograph. 1923. Approx. 19 x 7.5 in. framed to 22 x 10.5 in. Dark wood frame hanging wire attached. Panoramic class portrait capturing the 1923 graduating class of Tufts Medical School notably featuring two female graduates at a time when women still constituted a small minority in the field of medicine. The image shows 44 students and faculty in full academic regalia with the two women clearly visible among their peers positioned in the front row and at the far left both wearing the same cap and gown ensemble as their male counterparts. Their inclusion offers a rare and tangible visual record of the slow but growing inclusion of women in American medical education in the early 20th century a development that remained the subject of considerable social resistance. While coeducation in medical schools became more common after World War I women remained significantly underrepresented. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges women made up just 4.4% of all U.S. medical school students in 1920. Tufts Medical School which has remained coeducational since its founding in 1893 was among the progressive institutions that accepted female students early on. The presence of women in this image is particularly significant against the backdrop of evolving gender roles following the passage of the 19th Amendment just three years earlier in 1920. Their appearance in a class photo from a prestigious medical institution not affirms the inroads women made in education during this era. Lower right corner includes the imprint of "Rowe Photo 35 Court St. Boston". Photo retains strong contrast and detail. Wood Frame shows scattered scuffing. Overall very good condition. An exceptional image of early women physicians breaking barriers in a male-dominated profession. unknown‎

‎Stanford University School of Engineering‎

‎Stanford School of Engineering Photo Archive with Identified Faculty and Students 1930-50s‎

‎1930. Stanford University Military Engineering Archive Documenting the First Army Ordnance Reserve Gauging Program ca. 1930. Stanford University photo archive documenting the emergence of interwar military-industrial technical education ordnance gauging instruction and precision engineering research on campus during the early development of Stanford's engineering and applied science programs. Rather than depicting science classrooms in a general sense these photographs specifically document the technical culture surrounding Army ordnance training instrumentation systems machine calibration and laboratory-based engineering instruction that linked universities to the expanding infrastructure of American military preparedness between World War I and World War II. Taken together the archive captures Stanford at the moment when higher education increasingly merged scientific research industrial precision manufacturing and military technical training into a unified research model that later shaped the wartime and Cold War defense university system.

Photo archive of 11 large silver gelatin photographs each approximately 8" x 10" Stanford University California dating from 1930 into the 1950s; two later views mounted to decorative yellow board. Several photographs depict laboratory interiors filled with precision instrumentation gauging apparatus optical and mechanical measuring devices machine-tool equipment calibration benches microscopes drafting stations and technical worktables arranged for instruction and inspection work. One especially important close-up photograph shows a large precision gauging or rotational calibration apparatus associated with ordnance measurement and machine tolerance testing. Surrounding the device are machined cylindrical components threaded fittings gauge rings and polished metal parts likely used in dimensional inspection bore alignment concentricity testing or interchangeable manufacturing instruction. Another darkened workshop view depicts what appears to be a heavy precision lathe or gauging bench fitted with a mounted cylindrical test component equipment consistent with ordnance inspection and military engineering instruction during the interwar period. Additional photographs show groups of students and instructors posed around technical apparatus inside instrumentation laboratories while later mounted photographs document more formalized postwar engineering office and drafting environments associated with large-scale technical administration and research organization.

Most important is a detailed handwritten verso inscription reading: "Equipment used Feb 1930 Ordnance School at Stanford University. This was first time a course in gauging was given in any Army Ordnance Reserve Unit permanent facilities excepted. Instructor; Lieut Merrill S. Hingo. Photo; Lieut Howard Story Taylor." The inscription firmly identifies the archive as documentation of early Army ordnance reserve technical instruction conducted at Stanford and specifically ties the machinery to military gauging education. In the 1920s-30s "gauging" referred not merely to ordinary measurement but to the specialized science of precision dimensional inspection used in artillery manufacture weapons-part standardization shell tolerances bore measurement interchangeable machining systems and industrial calibration. Such instruction formed a critical component of modern military-industrial production where even minor deviations in machining tolerances could affect artillery accuracy chamber pressure shell seating or mechanical reliability.

Several outdoor group portraits further reinforce the military context. One large group stands beneath a doorway marked "Military Science and Tactics" while another includes Colonel Donald C. Cubbison a career U.S. Army officer and West Point graduate who served as professor of military science and tactics at Stanford from 1930 to 1935 before later attaining the rank of major general during World War II. His appearance situates the archive directly within Stanford's interwar military training system and links the photographs to broader national efforts to train technically educated reserve officers in engineering ordnance artillery science and industrial preparedness.

The archive also reflects Stanford's broader transformation into a modern research university centered on applied science and engineering. During the interwar years Stanford's scientific departments expanded laboratory instruction instrumentation programs and research-based technical education under faculty including Robert E. Swain John P. Mitchell William H. Sloan and George S. Parks. Parks in particular became associated with analytical chemistry and geochemical laboratory science disciplines heavily dependent upon precision instrumentation and calibrated measurement systems. The engineering and laboratory culture documented here overlaps with contemporary developments in industrial metrology applied physics materials testing optical measurement and machine-tool inspection that increasingly tied university research to industrial production and military logistics.

What makes the archive especially significant is the way it documents the transitional infrastructure between traditional university instruction and the emerging defense-oriented research university model. These photographs preserve not simply classrooms but the physical systems of technical education itself: calibration benches inspection machinery gauging apparatus optical instruments drafting rooms and laboratory spaces where students and reserve officers were trained in the precision engineering practices underlying twentieth-century industrial warfare and mass manufacturing. In doing so the archive visually traces the early foundations of the university-based defense engineering culture that would later expand dramatically during World War II and the Cold War throughout California research institutions and the broader military-industrial complex.

Photographs are sharp and highly detailed with clear views of equipment and interiors; handwritten identifications remain legible. The two mounted 1950s photographs have several large tears without image loss with lighter handling wear elsewhere. Overall good condition. unknown‎

‎Girls School Manchester‎

‎A Young Woman Teacher of Exceptional Talent Put Forward as Headmistress of the new Girls School in 1873‎

‎1873. Edward Freeman. Autograph Letter Signed. April 2 1873 Somerleaze Wells Somerset England. 4 pages on a single sheet folded. To "My Dear Lord" possibly a Bishop About a teacher who is too talented to be a governess whose name he puts forward as a candidate for headmistress of a new girls' school.

Stating in part "I see your name as a "Patron of the new Girls School to be set up at Manchester." I do not know whether that word is to be taken in the ecclesiastical sense as employing that you have a voice in disposing of offices in it. If so I would venture to recommend a candidate for the place of Head Mistress which I hear that the Committee are going about to fill one whom I am sure you will find it a great gain to put at the head of the new institution. This is Miss Macarthur who has been governess in my house for nearly five years and who is just now leaving us because all my daughters are now grown up. She is in correspondence with Miss Vernon to whom Mrs. Kitchener first spoke of her and she has asked me to say what I can for her to any of the Committee. I think the best witness of my opinion of her is that I have set her to write one of my series of small histories a History of Scotland which I hope will soon be out. She is a woman of powers far above the common and I can witness that she has practiced them well in the only two departments of which I am able to judge namely those of History and language. She is really strong in both; for though she does not actually understand Latin and Greek she knows all about them their relation to French English etc. I am sure she would do credit to the place. We are most anxious to find some post for her more independent than that of a private governess."

Unfortunately Miss Macarthur was not appointed; there being far better qualified candidates competing for this sought after position. She was Margaret A.R. Macarthur born in Scotland in 1842 and was the author of 'History of Scotland' in Freeman's Historical Course for Schools. It would be interesting to find out what happened to her. In fine condition. unknown‎

‎Girls School Surviving WW II Blitzkrieg‎

‎Mother Superior of a Girls' School Describes Living through the Blitzkrieg "We have had some bombs unpleasantly near." 1940‎

‎1940. Edith Mary's Head Teacher and Mother Superior of a Girls' School Describes Living through the Blitzkrieg. Autograph letter signed Dec. 22 1940. Letterhead of Ascot Priory Ascot Berks. Berkshire England To Mr. William Nourse. The Mother Superior writes this missive on living through the Blitz with a school of girls under her care.

".I appreciate the kindness of our friends more than ever this year for I know how much financially hit everyone is. I do hope you will have as happy a Christmas is possible Xmas 1941 bring us peace! We have had some bombs unpleasantly near but lately I am glad to say the nights have been much quieter." The Blitzkrieg lasted from September 1940 to May 1941 during which time bombs flown in by the Luftwaffe rained down on London and its environs. Ascot Priory in the pristine Berkshires 60 miles from London was apparently not immune from the devastation. However Sister Edith responds with monastic calm. The Congregation of Religious of the Society of the Most Holy Trinity was founded in 1856 as a sisterhood of nuns dedicated primarily to nursing the sick who could not find treatment in London. They also cared for orphans. In 1933 a girls secondary school was added to the priory and named St Augustine's School. There were about 136 boarders and day girls until it closed operations in 1965. Sister Edith who wrote this letter was fondly remembered by pupils as a PE teacher and by the time of the Blitz as Reverend Mother. unknown‎

‎Progressive Era Public School‎

‎Progressive Era Public School Gardening Movement Queens New York Photo Archive 1916 to 1920‎

‎1916. Collection of 43 original vintage photographs documenting the Public School Gardening Movement in Queens New York City 1916-1920 provides concentrated visual evidence of Progressive Era educational reform linking urban environmental transformation to child development and civic formation. Produced at the height of the national school gardening movement which flourished between 1900 and 1920 these photographs capture the integration of nature study playground reform tenement house activism and City Beautiful urbanism into the daily life of immigrant and working class children. The images support research in Progressive Era reform environmental education immigration history urban studies and the construction of civic identity through public schooling demonstrating how agricultural labor was reframed as moral physical and democratic training within dense metropolitan neighborhoods.

Forty three original photographs primarily silver gelatin prints Queens New York City 1916-1920. Most measure approximately 2 by 4 inches with several bearing manuscript dates between 1916 and 1920 and occasional notations identifying individuals or activities. The photographs depict schoolchildren planting seeds watering beds harvesting produce carrying baskets of vegetables and working collaboratively under teacher supervision in organized garden plots. Visual evidence indicates structured rows tool distribution and adult oversight underscoring the pedagogical framework rather than informal recreation. The movement in New York was shaped by the work of reformer Frances Griscom Parsons who established the Children's School Farm in Hell's Kitchen in 1902 to provide immigrant youth living amid warehouses factories and docks with access to cultivated land. Parsons articulated gardening as instruction in "brotherhood cooperation self respect and the dignity of labor" envisioning children as "little farmers" rehearsing democratic citizenship within an idealized urban microcosm structured into "boroughs" with its own elected governance. The Queens photographs reflect the diffusion of this model into outer borough public schools during the final years of the First World War and immediate postwar period.

The timing of the archive coincides with national concern over urban crowding industrialization and the assimilation of immigrant communities as well as wartime food production campaigns that reinforced agricultural instruction in schools. School gardens functioned simultaneously as environmental intervention civic laboratory and instrument of Americanization embedding Progressive reform ideals directly into children's bodily practice and daily routine. The photographs materially document how educational institutions operationalized nature study principles and urban reform agendas on the ground offering granular evidence of children's participation in structured agricultural labor within New York City's public school system. Minor edge wear and light surface handling marks to several prints; occasional light fading consistent with age; manuscript annotations legible. Overall very good condition. A cohesive visual archive illuminating the intersection of urban reform environmental education and immigrant childhood in Progressive Era New York. unknown‎
