Staniford John Thornberry Winnie Woodfern and Joseph Wolf. <br /> <br /> The accompanying text added below for context. <br /> <br /> Mr. Stebbings June and Mr. Nutter of Boston who undertook the voyage to Ceylon for the purpose of procuring elephants for Mr. Barnum's Traveling Menagerie have furnished us with some curious descriptions of their adventures in the interior of the island. On their arrival at Point de Galle early in October last they were disappointed in their expectations of procuring tame elephants either from the government authorities or from the temples which own large numbers of them. They then proceeded to Columbo the maritime capital of Ceylon on the western coast and afterwards to the city of Kany in the interior but without succeeding in their object. Very heavy rains had fallen just before their arrival and the elephants were required to assist in mending the roads. In this dilemma the elephant seekers determined to go into the jungles among the wild herds and endeavor to capture a ship load of the animals. This was considered a dangerous undertaking as the rainy season had just set in and the country necessary to be traversed was a dense tropical wilderness with no other roads than the foot-paths from one native village to another. Ceylon is divided nearly into two equal parts by a range of mountains running north and south which divide the periodical rains so that the rainy season changes from one side of the island to the other and the elephants follow it. Mr. June captured the greatest number of his elephants in the northern part of the island near the town of Anarajahpoora. The first process toward capturing the elephants is accurately represented in the engraving below. The natives having ascertained the spots most frequented by the herds construct in the neighborhood a kraal or pen. This is shaped like three sides of a square having an aperture on the fourth side for the entrance of the elephants from each side of which extends a long palisade slanting outwards like the mouth of a funnel. The kraal is made of heavy upright posts planted at a short distance from each other and lashed together by withes. To make them more secure they are stayed by slanting posts set against them on the outside. When the kraal is finished the natives surround a heard and by shouts and the firing of muskets alarm the animals who are urged forward toward the entrance and at last are all secured within the enclosure. In capturing these animals the natives evince much skill and tact. Our artist had thrown much life and spirit into this scene. Another way of taking elephants is sometimes practised. The animals during the heat of the day will sometimes rest himself against a tree and take an hour's doze with great satisfaction. Some of the natives are daring enough at this time to creep through the jungle till they reach his very feet. Provided with a rope the other end of which is made fast to a tree the hind leg of the animal is touched gently and being very sensitive he lifts his foot to shake off the supposed fly and a noose is instantly slipped under. London 1760. Copper plate engraving with hand coloring in watercolor on cream laid paper with a large circular watermark bearing a heart and arrow along with several Roman numerals and letters including II and S 8 1/4 x 16 3/ 8 x inches 208 x 423 mmimage area margins trimmed. Color slightly attenuated with some age tone mat tone and light scattered discoloration. Paper tape repair with in-painting at top right extreme corner paper tape support along the top sheet edge. Condition issues are consistent with age. This optic view of London and the Thames shows the north bank of the river from where Somerset House now stands in the east down to London Bridge and the Tower in the west. Also visible is the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral. Published in London circa 1760 this engraving is one of a series of images that were called optical views or perspectives. They originated in the early eighteenth century as part of the thriving topographical print market in cities such as Paris and London. As monied tourists traveled Europe these views became increasingly popular as souvenirs. After a trip abroad it was common practice among the wealthy denizens of London and Paris to produce "perspectives" after a dinner party. The views were enjoyed with the aid of a device known as a zograscope while the hosts regaled their company with travel tales. unknown

Hand coloring is extensive and vibrant. An ass wears his Lord Mayor's gown and chain over court dress with big bows on his shoulders. Published in November 1830 this anthropomorphic satirical caricature is of Sir John Key 1st Baronet 16 August 1794 - 14 July 1858 who was a wholesale stationer and Whig politician in England. He was elected Sheriff of the City of London in 1824 and Lord Mayor of London for two years from 1830 to 1832. <br /> <br /> An uncolored impression of this work may be found in the permanent collection of the British Museum accession No. 16302. unknown

1860. Watercolor and pencil on cream wove J Whatman 1827 paper with a partial watermark 7 x 10 1/8 inches 176 x 256 mm the full sheet. The left sheet edge has significant wear; the result of its removal from a page in an album to which the sheet was tipped in. There is also a horizontal tear in the center left sheet edge which extends approximately one inch into the image through the image of the figure with outstretched arms. Small corner losses at the the top right and left sheet as well as a small 1/4 inch at the lower left corner. Colors are extensive and saturated. unknown

Sarah Whitehead; The Bank Nun or the Lady in Black
London 1820. Lithograph with handcoloring in watercolor 9 x 6 1/2 inches 230 x 165 mm full margins. Light pencil inscriptions in the lower margins which are largely illegible. Light handling wear and some surface soiling otherwise in good condition with beautiful saturated watercolor work in the area of the subject's face. Whitehead's brother Philip was employed by the Bank of England from 1797 to 1810. During his employment at the Bank Philip Whitehead "adopted an extravagant lifestyle" and evidence came to light that he had defrauded Robarts & Co. by "forging an acceptance to a Bill." He was charged with forgery in 1811 and executed on 29 January 1812. The news of her brother's conviction was kept from his sister Sarah as long as possible. Learning of the execution Sarah Whitehead's mental health became unstable and she began to visit the Bank daily asking if Phillip was there. This continued until 1818 when the Directors offered Whitehead a financial grant on the condition that she stopped coming to the bank. Whitehead wore black crepe clothing which was a sign of mourning and as a result became known as the "Black Nun." To this day Whitehead's ghost reputedly haunts the Bank of England as well as the area on Threadneedle Street nearby. The myth of Whitehead's ghost appears in the poem New Year Letter by W. H. Portrait of Fingal or Finn MacCool
1833. Black chalk and graphite on lightweight cream wove paper 16 1/8 x 11 1/4 inches 410 x 286 mm the full sheet. Signed titled and dated in sepia ink in the lower-center sheet area. With horizontal folds approximately 1-inch from the sheet edge at each of the four sheets. The drawing appears to have been folded at the sheet edges to fit into a frame. "Inscribed Guillaume hameau del. 29 Janvier 1883." Finn mac Cumail or mac Umaill often anglicized Finn McCool or MacCool is a hero in Irish mythology as well as in later Scottish and Manx folklore. He is the leader of the Fianna bands of young roving hunter-warriors as well as being a seer and poet. He is said to have a magic thumb that bestows him with great wisdom. He is often depicted hunting with his hounds Bran and Sceólang and fighting with his spear and sword. Fionn MacCumhail was transformed into the character "Fingal" in James Macpherson's poem cycle Ossian 1760 which Macpherson claimed was translated out of discovered Ossianic poetry written in the Scottish Gaelic language. <br /> <br /> Fionn MacCumhail features heavily in modern Irish literature. Most notably he makes several appearances in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake 1939 and some have posited that the title taken from the street ballad "Finnegan's Wake" may also be a blend of "Finn again is awake" referring to his eventual awakening to defend Ireland. unknown

In very good condition with some minor areas of light brown spotting in the right-center sheet margin. An excellent drawing with fine detail. The ruins of the Temple of Vespasian and Titus are located in the Roman Forum in Rome. The temple is a marble ruin that honors the deified emperors Vespasian and Titus. Located near the Temple of Saturn all that remain standing are three Corinthian columns that formed part of the colonnade. The temple was also dedicated to the son of Vespasiano Titus. Construction started on this temple in 79 AD. unknown
