Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883) was a popular Flemish author who "possessed, to a high degree, the sense of the dramatic and pathetic. and had a wonderful power of grasping the picturesque side of things. rendering it with a rare felicity of expression." A fine tale of travel and adventures, with vignettes of: sea travel; mutiny; gold prospecting; gambling; ghosts; and even a lynching. Amedee Forestier (1861-1930) was an illustrator for the Illustrated London News. W148.
