1868. Early Women Education. Autograph Letter Signed on verso of a Handbill regarding Ragged Schools April 13 1868. Rev. H. Newton-Vicar of St. michael's Mission Schools Lant Street writes to a donor about the work of the Ragged schools. Verso is a broadside for "The Lant Street Ragged Schools for Boys and Girls Borough Southwark." Reading in part "These Ragged Schools are placed in the midst of the poorest populationin Southwark in are the largest with about 850 attendances daily and the most important in South London." Attendance shows girls far outnumbered boys in the school "Boys in the Lower School Room.167 Girls in the Upper School Room.243.Afternoon Boys.162 Girls.233. The attendants at the Evening School in which more grown persons of both sexes are taught to read and write number about.65." He has made notes in his hand on the broadside portion in part "Ragged Schools male & female." At the time that this description is being written no copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. This rare handbook is considerably more interesting for the first-hand manuscript content regarding the coeducational activities of the school. unknown
1916. Women Education Europe Identification Card for Sophia State Girls' High School СофийÑка държавна ДъвиуеÑка Ð³Ð¸Ð¼Ð½Ð°Ð·Ð¸Ñ 1916. Sophia is the largest and Capital city of Bulgaria. 4.5 x 3.25 in. Original blue cloth folder. Identification photo of teenge girl pasted inside dated 19.III.1916. Original silver gelatin print 2.75 x 2 in. This young student wears a dark pinafore uniform and a fashionable hat and looks confidently out at the viewer. This was mere months after Bulgaria declared entered World War I in October 1915. Normal education was disrupted for most Bulgarian students during the Balkan Wars 1912-1913 and WWI 1915-1918 so this girl was likely very grateful for the opportunity to study. Cloth that is hard covers pp. 67 and 1 advertisement for the City Baths managed by Charles Bastard. Frontispiece and one other plate. Part II of the book pp. 21-47 is concerned mainly with Cockney Toms experiences on the Victorian goldfields. The plate opposite p. 37 is captioned On the Diggings at Tarrangower. At the foot of the frontispiece portrait Professor Bastard has written in ink With the Authors Comps To a recipient whose name has been largely blacked out. The recipient whose name is blacked out may well have been Captain J.W. Smith who was one of the subscribers. Front inner hinge split. The book is loosened in its casing though still firmly attached; otherwise a very good copy. hardcover
