Langholen Lodge Richmond Surrey. 5 January 1924. Whaite was first cousin twice removed of his more famous namesake. He was himself an excellent artist and teacher and there is a large collection of his work at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester. 2pp. 12mo. Fair on aged creased paper with slight rust spotting. Mawson begins: 'Mr. H. Clarence Whaite first came under my notice a few years ago when attending my lecture on Decoration & Ornamental Design at the Slade School - and from the first I was much struck with his understanding and grasp of the principles. This enabled him to carry out work of exceptional merit. He has designed for fabrics pottery metal work word cuts painted decoration medals &c. . On letterhead of The Press Art School 37 Dacres Road Forest Hill London S.E. 5 November 1931. 1p. 8vo. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. Letterhead illustrated in old-fashioned style with a bare-chested woman clutching a pen floating at the head of a twirl of loose papers and fabrics. The circular which encloses a prospectus draws the recipient's notice to the nature of the two courses offered within it. It concludes: 'The clever student will find that the lessons cost him nothing - in fact that they pay him over and over again before the Advanced Course is completed - for the Art Editors who have helped to organize these Courses are naturally interested in my students' drawings and they buy a large number each week. I teach every student - and submit his drawings for sale - personally. Owing to the great demand for these Courses I can only accept a few more pupils now; you should therefore let me know at once if you wish me to help you.' AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the popular Anglo-Welsh school poet LEWIS MORRIS to the American lecture manager Major James B. Pond about his financial concerns over lecturing in America.
<p>Pall Mall London. . Fine. - Four pages consisting of over 400 words penned on all four sides of 6-7/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide "The Atheneum Pall Mall. S.W." stationery with a pictorial blind crest embossed at top left of the first page. The popular Anglo-Welsh school poet Lewis Morris responds to the American impressario and lecture manager Major Pond's inquiry about lecturing in America. Writing from the "Reform Club" he says ". the trick is that with a somewhat expensive family my margin of income over expenditure is so small that I should be very slow to run any risk whatever." Though he is hesitant he is "well enough known in America" to ensure success. "The other doubt arises from the fact that my poems are in no degree humorous but rather of a sober character." Signed in full "Lewis Morris". Near fine.</p><p>The Welsh academic and politician Sir Lewis Morris 1833-1907 was a popular poet of the Anglo-Welsh school. A lawyer he was unsuccessful as the liberal candidate for Pembroke Boroughs and Carmarthen Boroughs. He was best known as a poet of the Anglo-Welsh school and was knighted by Queen Victoria. His association with Oscar Wilde probably cost him being appointed Poet Laureate. Among his most famous poems is "Love's Suicide".</p> Pall Mall, London.
