Harrow School in Georgian Times [George Butler (1774-1853), headmaster from 1805 to 1829, and later Dean of Peterborough]:
Harrow School in Georgian times. Anonymous Manuscript Notebook containing lists of boys' names under various headings 'Monitors' 'Upper VI' and so on compiled under headmastership of George Butler.
Circa 1818. Harrow School Middlesex. This item is a nice artefact of one of England’s foremost public schools. The great rival of Eton Harrow numbers among its alumni seven prime ministers including Churchill. This notebook comprises lists of boys and their positions and classes in a particular term. The paper stock watermark and handwriting all indicate that its composition is contemporaneous with the schooling of those named. It is the work of one person almost certainly one of the school’s masters and its loose and hurried nature indicate that it was intended for personal use or as an aid in future writing. There is no internal indication of author or source but the latter is established beyond all doubt by reference to R. Courtenay Welch’s ‘Harrow School Register 1801-1893’ 1894 which shows that the notebook was compiled in the last few years of the reign of George IV and certainly during the tenure of George Butler 1774-1853 headmaster from 1805 to 1829 and later Dean of Peterborough see his entry in the Oxford DNB. As Welch explains in his introduction the early part of his register is incomplete and it is likely that the present item names individuals not present there. It is 24pp with an additional 2pp of pencil calculations and a page with a simple pencil drawing of the front parts of a horse in a stitched 7 x 8 cm notebook of watermarked laid paper in dark-blue waxed card wraps. The notebook contains thirty leaves out of an original thirty-six with a few leaves loose and one stub present. All but one of the 24pp are written on the rectos. Each page carries a list of names - sometimes as many as 21 to a page sometimes only a handful under the following headings: p.1 Monitors; pp.2 and 3 Upper VI; p.6 Upper V; p.8 Under V; p.11 Upper Shell; p.14 Under Shell; p.16 IV Form 1st Rem.; p.18 IV Form 2nd Rem.; p.20 IV Form 3d Rem.; p.21 IIId Form 1st Rem; p.22 IIId Form 2nd Rem; p.23 IIId Form 3d Rem; p.24 Unplaced. P.14 will serve as an example: ‘Under Shell / Perceval Minr / Maydwell / Smith Minor / Balfour Jun / Bradford / Graham / Park Junior / Crommelin Senr / Davidson / Gregg / Mr Dundas Junr / Winter / Elliot / Sheppard / Hammet / Macham / North Minr’. Among the mass of names many are identifiable with Welch’s aid. The following individuals were unless otherwise stated entered in 1813-15: ‘R. B. Phillipps Senr / Longworth in the County of Hereford’ is identified by Welch as Robert Biddulph Phillipps ‘son of Chancellor Phillipps’entered 1811; ‘A. Clive Esq of Whitfield’ is Archer Clive d.1878 ‘son of E. B. Clive Esq. M.P.’ entered 1811-1813; ‘Ponsford’ is William Ponsford ‘son of W. Ponsford Esq. Puddicombe Devon’; on p.3 ‘Boileau Pollen’ is George Pollen Boileau-Pollen ‘son of J. P. Boileau Esq. afterwards Boileau-Pollen’; ‘Ld Ashley’ is Anthony Ashley-Cooper Lord Ashley ‘son of the 6th Earl of Shaftesbury’; ‘Goldschmidt’ is Adolphus Goldschmidt ‘Merchant’; ‘Crommelin Senr’ is George Russell Crommelin 1803-1844 the younger Crommelin being Thomas Lake Crommelin 1805-1877; ‘Count P: Lieven’ is Count Paul Lieven ‘son of Count afterwards Prince Lieven Russian Ambassador’ 1816. Christ’s Hospital London public school. Six forms and circulars relating to the application for admission of Stanley Thomas Cross later of the League of Nations; two letters from Cross to his mother about going up to Pembroke College Oxford.
Eight items from Christ's Hospital London and West Horsham. The first six from 1894 and 1895 the last two from around 1903. Eight items from the papers of Stanley Thomas Cross including six evocative pieces of Christ’s Hospital ephemera. Four of the items have some singing to extremities in a couple of cases affecting a few words of text otherwise the material is in fair condition. The material ranges in dimension from foolscap 8vo to 12mo. Items One to Five are printed circulars each with the school crest relating to the Christ’s Hospital admissions process dating from 1894 and 1895 all from ‘R. L. Franks Clerk’. ONE: 17 October 1894. Informing Mrs Matilda Cross that her son is ‘about to compete for admission’. TWO: 22 November 1894. Informing Mrs Cross that ‘S. T. Cross’ has been ‘recommended for admission’. THREE: 1894. 4pp foolscap 8vo. Printed by Harrison and Sons Printers in Ordinary to Her Majesty St. Martin’s Lane. Giving ‘particulars of the Regulations relative to the presentation and admission of children into this Hospital’s Boarding Schools under the Scheme of the Charity Commissioners’. FOUR: 22 January 1895. Notice of admission examination by ‘the Head Master and by the Medical Officers of the Hospital’ headed in manuscript ‘The Presentation having been received’. Giving the ‘subjects of examination’ in reading writing arithmetic geography and English grammar with medical details including that the child’s hair must be ‘newly cut and free from grease’. The child should be provided with a Bible Book of Common Prayer Hair Brush and Comb Tooth Brush and Pair of Stout Slippers. Other regulations are stated. FIVE: 22 January 1895. Headed ‘Revised Notice’ in red ink. Truncated and slightly amended version of parts of Item Four directing that ‘The Child Stanley Thomas Cross is to be brought by the Petitioner named in the Nomination Paper to The Office in Christ’s Hospital London’ where he is to be ‘examined by the Medical Officers of the Hospital’. SIX: Mimeographed facsimile of autograph letter dated 6 December 1894 with actual signature of the Christ’s Hospital clerk R. L. Franks and addressed by him to S. T. Cross’s mother ‘Mrs. Matilda Cross’. Begins with autograph additions by Franks in square brackets: ‘I have now the pleasure to inform you that the Council have approved the recommendation of the Education Committee that your son S. T. Cross be admitted into this Hospital’s Boy’s School subject to the provisions of the Scheme’. SEVEN and EIGHT: Two Autograph Letters to his mother Mrs Matilda Cross one signed ‘Stanley’ and the other without signature. Both on bifoliums and apparently incomplete. Both from Lamb’s House Christ’s Hospital West Horsham the unsigned letter on school letterhead. Neither dated but the unsigned letter docketed 18 May 1903. SEVEN: Undated letter to his mother signed ‘Stanley’. Discussing the terms of a scholarship ‘They would never take it away except for gross idling.’ to what is clearly Pembroke College Oxford. 4pp 12mo. There is a reference to ‘Barton’s letter’ Alfred Thomas Barton 1865-1912 Fellow of Pembroke and he discusses the possible need for a testimonial living costs at Oxford and the reduced school scholarship due to ‘the extraordinary number nine of the successful Grecians this year’. The letter concludes breaks off: ‘I was kept on after the usual time for leaving to be a Grecian & on the understanding that I should obtain the customary exhibition; tis only within the past year that my eyes have been opened; my scholarship is in no way inferior to those of many past Grecians who have proceeded to the University on School Exhibitions’. EIGHT: Unsigned undated letter to mother docketed with date 18 May 1903. 3pp 12mo. Begins: ‘My Dear Mother. / Well I’ve got it. Its only a £60 Schol but I mean to get on somehow. I am now free from all anxiety & at liberty to hunt around for assistance from Companies.There is a reference to another letter from ‘old Barton . the Senior Tutor’. He admits: ‘I may as well tell you now that if I had failed to get in before midsummer I should have given it up. last clause underlined For it would have been no use going on any longer.’ He gives further details of the arrangements with reference to ‘Upcott’ asking her not to divulge ‘how much the schol is worth’ After Oxford Cross would work as a schoolmaster before serving in the Great War. He then worked in the Hague as a translator at the newly-formed League of Nations Permanent Court of International Justice. During the Second World War he worked as a censor at the BBC in London before returned to the Hague retiring six months before his death in 1950. A scarce piece of ephemera from the earliest days of the LSE: no other copy traced either on JISC or WorldCat. There is a 47-page related item in a library in the Netherlands. A stapled 12mo pamphlet of 32 pp. in pink printed wraps which are themselves paginated i-iv. On aged and discoloured paper with lightly rusted staples and a hole to one corner for stringing up not damaging any text and note in blue pencil at head of front cover: ‘see pp 12 19’. Pp. 12 19 and 20 each have a little underlining in blue pencil. The title on the cover reads: ‘Extract from the Calendar of The London School of Economics and Political Science University of London For the Session 1904-1905 Specifying the Courses of particular interest to those engaged in Accounting’. The title on p.1 is different and corresponds with that of the Dutch pamphlet although that item is 47 instead of 32 pp long: ‘The London School of Economics and Political Science. University of London. The Sessional Programme for the Session 1904-1905 Together with a List of recently published and other Standard Works in Economics and Political Science and cognate subjects. September 1904.’ The inside front cover p.ii is headed ‘H. - Accounting.’ and lists ‘courses of lectures in Accountancy and Business Methods’ that ‘the Governors of the School have established’ ‘In view of the increasing importance to business men of scientific training in Accounting of the close relation of that subject to the exact study of economics commercial and administrative problems and of its position in the scheme adopted for the University of London for the B.Sc. and D.Sc. degrees’. The back inside cover p.iii outlines ‘The work of the school.’ which is arranged in twelve lettered groups from Economics to Librarianship. The text of the pamphlet begins with a list of the officers from the President Lord Rothschild to the Governors including Bertrand Russell Herbert Louis Samuel and ‘Mrs. Bernard Shaw’ and ‘Mrs. Sidney Webb’. Harrisburg PA: Army Air Forces Intelligence School 1943. Very good. Quarto unpaginated about 100pp. illustrated with 83 original tipped-in photographs and an envelope containing 13 more loose and unidentified images laid-in. Housed in the original cardstock clasped folder. Many of the pages have a bottom fold which does not fully open without the potential to tear though all of the contents can be read with some effort. Some pages a touch foxed and a few prints are loosened from their pages and laid-in in the right place. Overall in very good condition. A well-organized and illustrated military textbook for a wartime class on aircraft identification which was probably taught in many places but organized at the US Army Air Force base in Harrisburg. An introductory sheet in perfect bureaucratic fashion placed near the end of this textbook states: "The course in Aircraft Identification consists of ten hours spaced over a period of six weeks." It goes on to list a series of 42 aircraft--American German Italian French and Japanese--which will be easily identified by all successful students by the end of the course. <br /> <br /> The first few dozen pages consist of detailed folding charts with data on dimensions payloads etc. Another section of about 12pp. gives a background on various best practices when trying to identify aircraft as well as some of the principles behind the course. <br /> <br /> The course utilized the "WEFT" system wings engine fuselage tail to help individuals soldiers intelligence agents etc. identify planes in the field from various angles at different heights and in certain contexts. Most of the pages dedicated to individual planes contain two photographs from different angles and with different shading trying to mimic real battlefield conditions under which someone might try to identify an aircraft.<br /> <br /> An unusually engaging wartime military textbook appealing to photography aviation and military collectors alike. Not located in OCLC thus notably absent in the holdings of the Army War College Library which retains most technical manuals and course books. Army Air Forces Intelligence School unknown

Strikingly there is a reverent photograph of a placard monument honoring the Ku Klux Klan's activities during Reconstruction alongside less controversial portraits of notable city fathers and historical events. The book is dedicated to the "Cabarrus Black Boys." This was a group of white men who in 1771 raided a British military storage house disguised as either African-Americans or Native Americans as part of the wiser "Regulator Movement" of rural North Carolinians against colonial government taxes and other policies preceding the American Revolution by several years and certianly anticipating it. The pamphlet is rare in commerce; we haven't found a single copy offered at auction in the past half century. The dozen or so copies in worldwide libraries are all--but one--in North Carolina. Cleveland: self-published 1920. Staplebound. Fine. Octavo 64pp. illustrated. A fine copy in the publisher's stapled wraps. A profusely illustrated promotional catalogue for this driving school in Cleveland which claimed to be the oldest of its kind in the United States. Packed with testimonials descriptions of classes and images from photographs this volume shows off the institution's many benefits. Laid in are several ephemeral items related to the school including a flyer advertising free airplane rides for students of the school and a sign-up form and unused envelope for would-be students. A small handful of similar catalogues are held by local institutions per OCLC but this one with "18th year" at the beginning of the title appears to be unlocated. A great piece of automotive history dating from the era when Cleveland rivaled Detroit in the automotive manufacturing space. (self-published) unknown

Cleveland: Interstate School of Commerce 1925. Folded brochure. Very good . One folded brochure which unfolds to the size of a poster about 3.75" x 9" folded; 15" x 27" unfolded. In very good or better condition with old folds and trivial foxing at the fore-edge of the front wrap. Fantastic ephemeral document which promotes the Interstate School of Commerce a kind of private vocational school. When fully unfolded a collage of more than 100 recent graduates appears superimposed on the buildig that houses the school. Most interestingly the school is co-educational and seems to make very little distinction between its male and female students. At the first stage of unfolding the following is printed: "The Field of Woman's Endeavor is an Ever Widening One." This brochure was meant to be mailed although this example never was. There are no separate listings for this document in OCLC and we presume it to be scarce. Interstate School of Commerce unknown
