‎Diogenes searching for an honest man with a lamp.‎

‎Dutch mid-17th century drawing possibly by Rembrandt pupil Willem Drost. Depicted is Diogenes in robes with his lantern in his left hand and a staff in his right and a group of four figures. Diogenes the Cynic 4th cent. BC renounced material possessions and lived in poverty. He would go out with a lighted lantern in broad daylight to look for an honest man instead he would only find that everyone around him was morally corrupted. He would scare passersby with his lantern causing them to lose their mask and reveal their true intentions.In the present drawing the group of four is clearly scared by the lantern of Diogenes who seems to be towering over them. In fact the artist has placed Diogenes on a higher plane than the passersby an invention that effectively enhances the morality of the scene. This is not found in other contemporary depictions of the same story by artists like Rubens Sandrart Castiglione and Jordaens.The artistdisplays a masterful understanding and application of chiaroscuro. Not only does he use it for the composition he also applies it to benefit the narrative. Light is literally and figuratively at the center of the scene. The artist from the "Rembrandt school" who made most use of stark chiaroscuro in his drawings was Willem Drost 1633-1659. He became a student of Rembrandt around 1650 which corresponds with the dating of the watermark. The style of drawing is also close to drawings attributed to Drost. The facial type of Diogenes in particular the pointy nose corresponds with that found in each of Drost's drawings in the Rijksmuseum. Also the hatchingsmatch those in other works by Drost who made much use of individual lines instead of a continuous zig-zagging stroke and penstrokes of varying thickness to create depth in his compositions Bonny van Sighem 2000.<i>Condition: Number 3 in pencil at the bottom previous attribution to Ferdinand Bol written in pencil on the back. Several small brown spots and a couple minor defects including one on the face of the central figure in the group top edge slightly frayed and creaded. Twenty three lessons bound consequitively and with publication dates from 1934 to 1936; 9 1/4 x 7; pp. 460 altogether; dark-blue leatherette binder decorated with a vignette of a nurse; a shoelace string through two metal eyelets binds the cover and booklets; illustrated with numerous photographs and drawings; manuscript date at head of each title 1936 and faint signature of previous owner to first title page; boards with wear along spine and corners; occasional minor spot to margins of text; last lesson detached but present; in good to very good condition. The Chicago School of Nursing was a correspondence school founded by Dr. Orville Juan Perkins in 1899 and incorporated in 1909. Its course was billed as "the first largest and most popular of the home study nursing programs" and encompassed 53 lessons. Examinations were administered periodically by mail and the exam questions could be found at the end of the lessons. Although the lessons did provide thorough theorethical knowledge it could not offer valuable hands-on experience and the program was shut down sometime in the mid-20th century. The Harlock's were natives of Banbury and the daughters of a local draper and former mayor who used part of the family home as a school until the death of their father in 1923 who was by then 101. As the Harlock's were Quakers good works by the family for the local area was something of a calling. Francis later served on the committee of management of the Friends' School at Sibford and it would appear that the sisters had run their own school on a break-even principle and saw education as a vocation rather than a money making enterprise.</p> The Lawn, St. John’s Road, Banbury.‎

‎Seneca Falls NY 1891. No Binding. Near Fine. 3-inch diameter globe anchored in magnifying glass as issued; 5 ½ inches total height. Color-printed wax-engraved gores; some fading of place names a few repair in extreme southern portion but overall remarkably little wear; overall excellent condition. An unrecorded delightful cartographic curiosity: a very good quality miniature globe with a magnifying paperweight as its base. Only two other globes by the American Globe and Supply Company are known: a six-inch terrestrial recorded by Rumsey dated 1892 and an eight-inch terrestrial cited in Rittenhouse dated 1891; see below. This Seneca Falls New York company was one of several for which Rand McNally supplied gores for the globes it produced. Rand McNally did not issue its first globe until 1887. ‎<p><em>4to printed bifolio sheet 24 x 19.5 cm some marks and folds. Addressed to Joseph Hume M.P and signed by Richard Burchet R.W. Herman and W.D. Telfer. </em></p><p>In 1845 Richard Burchett became the ringleader of students protesting to the Board of Trade about the teaching methods at the Government School of Design: this was the first attempt to improve the instruction in the principles and practice of ornamental design. The complaint became so serious that eventually a Parliamentary Committee of Enquiry was instituted in 1846 at which he and others gave evidence. Oddly by that time Burchett had already become a master at the school and so was giving evidence against his own employees to the committee.</p><p>This copy was addressed to the radical Joseph Hume M.P who was a close friend of William Williams another radical M.P. who led the charge of incompetence by the School of Design in the House of Commons. After eight committee meetings it was agreed that the School was not in good shape 'the principles of Ornaments and the practice of original design as applicable to manufactures are not efficiently taught' and 'That a knowledge of manufacturing processes so as to enable the students to unite fitness and practicability in Ornament is not communicated.' Reforms were instituted but not in time for some woefully bad designs to appear at the Great Exhibition of 1851 for all the world to see.</p> [London], 17 Bond Street, Commercial Road. 10th July‎

‎<b><i>Founding of Harvard Medical School</i></b><br /><br /><i>The Boston Magazine</i> was published from October 1783 to December 1786 and was the first magazine to be published in Boston in the aftermath of the American Revolution. A major attraction of this issue is the presence of the front and rear printed wrappers although they are frayed and detached. The front wrapper features a large woodcut of the State House and surrounding buildings in Boston.The first 3 1/2 pages of the<i> Magazine</i> are Harvard's announcement from September 1783 of the creation of "the Medical Institution" now known as Harvard Medical School. This is followed by about two pages of an address "to the students in physic" i.e. the medical students reflecting upon the first two years of the medical school and outlining the requirements for a medical degree. About two pages are devoted to the sailing directions into and out of Plymouth Harbour. A brief news item in the "Monthly Chronology" reports a meeting to be held in October in Falmouth in the District of Maine on creating a "separate government" for the eastern counties -- a very early report on a separation that would not happen for another 35 years.
