‎"Ce livre est un recueil d’articles parus sous ce titre, en 1901 et 1902 dans le "Journal". Il s’adresse à la jeunesse et se propose de l’éclairer dans le choix des carrières où elle pourra employer son énergie. Il comprend vingt-trois chapitres qui, pour la plupart, peuvent, en effet, éveiller les vocations et diriger les aptitudes naissantes du jeune homme. Mais les deux premiers, le Préjugé scolaire et l’Enseignement pratique, comme les trois derniers, la Réforme de l’enseignement, (’Enseignement court et la Conclusion, intéresseront plutôt les parents que les enfants, et surtout les lecteurs qui se préoccupent de l’organisation nouvelle de l’enseignement dans la démocratie française. Les chapitres plus spécialement destinés aux jeunes gens par la clarté magistrale de l’exposition, le sens pratique des solutions proposées et les aperçus nouveaux qu’ils contiennent, peuvent assurément contribuer à rejeter vers l’agriculture, la colonisation, le commerce ou l’industrie une bonne partie de la jeune bourgeoisie qui, par tradition et veulerie, se destine aux carrières dites « libérales » . Si un pareil but était atteint, l’auteur aurait bien mérité de la patrie. Un volume qui se lit sans fatigue et avec plaisir. Les opinions personnelles de l’auteur sont, en effet, dignes d’attention et de réflexion. En somme, ce volume mérite de prendre place dans les bibliothèques des familles et des éducateurs." (F. Lemoine, Revue internationale de l'enseignement, 1905) — "Gabriel Hanotaux fut un érudit solide, un ministre des Affaires étrangères discuté, mais aussi un excellent journaliste. Dans le "Journal", de mai 1901 à avril 1902, il publie une série d'articles sur la réforme de l'enseignement et le choix d'une carrière. Ces articles furent réunis dans un volume, "Du choix d'une carrière" (1903) où les chapitres sont suivis d'intéressants Observations et conseils pratiques écrits après la publication dans le "Journal". Les pages sur « les fonctions publiques » relèvent de l'archéologie administrative, et Hanotaux est un bon témoin, il a certaine expérience des bureaux et de la politique. Sa thèse est nette : il faut orienter les jeunes vers le commerce, l'industrie, les détourner des fonctions publiques, qui ne peuvent satisfaire des tempéraments actifs, sauf dans les hauts emplois. Il dénonce le « fonctionnarisme », la croissance de l'administration qui devient une charge trop élevée pour le corps social, la pratique du concours..." (Guy Thuillier, La Revue administrative, 1991) Désormais les frais d'envoi sont de 6 € seulement pour les livres jusqu'à 1 kg (colissimo suivi), pour la France métropolitaine.‎
