The Club was located at 18 Pierrepont Street and members were made up of the Senior Department of Brooklyn Heights Seminary with the expiration of their membership two years after leaving the Seminary. Fellows Clerk dated May 15th and the second headed 'No.3' for "each of the Commissioners Inspectors and Trustees of the Several Ward and Public Schools to be distributed among the Teachers" Albert Gilbert Clerk with an additional date of Oct.16th 1850. The Committee followed the recommendations included in the report and "Resolved That the Board of Education earnestly recommend the Inspectors and Trustees of the several Ward and Public Schools to exert their united influence to abolish corporal punishment in every department of the Schools under their control." it was signed by Dr. William A. Walters Samuel A. Crapo John McLean and Wm. S. Duke. Though the various boards had encourage less severity beginning in 1823 it was not until twenty years after this resolve in 1870 that the practice was banned and which remained in effect despite attempts to reverse it over the years. Very Good Condition. 19th century red morocco gilt hinges and spine rubbed and a little weak but still generally sound and attractive. Added marbled endpapers and a description of the edition and a note on the binding penned on added blank endpapers. The second edition of Tacitus much improved by Puteolanus from the first with the editio princeps of The Life of Agricola. Once thought to have been printed in the 1470s but now usually pegged as 1487. Likely washed though gently except for the first and final leaves Agricola leaves 176-187 with a dampstain in the margin final two leaves darkened. Four small wormtrails in last section leavs 121-end two trails in the textblock but generally very unobtrusive. Top edge gilt and trimmed slightly when rebound leaf numbers penciled lightly and neatly in the inner gutter.<br/><br/>Five 6 line and one 2 line initial colored in early or contemporary color 37 lines set in a fine Roman typeface often compared to Jenson and assumed to be set by him at one point 187 leaves with the blanks at 160 and 176 but lacking the final blank. <br/><br/>Graesse T7 Dibdin Bibl. 1975-2013 Woman Music Teacher's Archive Highlighting Creative Work: Teaching Authoring a Piano Instructional and Founding the Eastern Suffolk School of Music.
Long Island New York: Not Published 1975. Ann Ullman Hirsch 1929 - 2017 had formal musical training and education at Juilliard and NYU; she was a passionate musician music educator and administrator. In a career spanning more than 60 years she was well known on Long Island for her extensive musical contributions including founding the Eastern Suffolk School of Music in Riverhead in 1977 and serving as its executive director for 10 years. Pianist and violinist she was a valued member of the L.I. Sound Symphony and was a private piano instructor to children and adults. Named East End Woman of Year in Education East End Magazine Suffolk County NY 1979 and honored by Peconic Bay Zonta at a Celebration of Women in 2013. from her obituary in 27 East and several online sources Collection includes: 1975 A 68-page typed manuscript with 2 annotated working draft copies of "A Basic Guide for the Teaching of Piano" by Ann U. Hirsch. These include tipped-on photographs of students' correct form along with the teaching exercises in the text & with extra image-sheets and 35mm photographic negatives laid-in. One of the drafts has extensive marginal notation. All are accomplished one-side either on quality typing bond paper of the time or copies. The original set is a group of loose sheets; working drafts are in 3-ring binders. Ms. Hirsch' introduction explains her purpose since according to her research - "There are also many fine books both long and short written by great pianists that suggest technical and artistic approaches for the advanced and professional performers but my purpose is hopefully to have written something for those who work primarily with beginners. I have tried to make it personal and informal while at the same time offer specific advice in the areas I consider most crucial. My hope is that if this book were to be published it could be made inexpensively in pocket book size and thus be available on counters in music stores as well as in colleges for all those who study piano and expect to teach it too" With 3 typed original letters from Ms. Hirsch to the music publishers Theodore Presser Co. Sterling Publishing Co. and Prentis Hall Publications all describing the content and asking in similar fashion to consider her book for publication. Included here are these three publishers' rejection-replies & another letter from Dover publishing which also rejected her project for various reasons. There is also a handwritten request from Ms. Hirsch soliciting the opinion of a professional editor-writer whom she thought may be able to help put her book into proper form for publication. Our research on OCLC at time of cataloging does not indicate any publication history. With A series of 8 Catalogs of the Eastern Suffolk School of Music spanning the years 1979 - 1989. Approx. 5 ½" x 8 ½" size; stapled printed softcovers; 20 to 40 pages each. These catalogs provide a listing of the board of directors committees administration staff - faculty with extensive musical biographies of the dozens of teachers involved giving instruction in voice piano violin flute cello guitar oboe trumpet dance harp organ recorder French horn viola brass instruments jazz improvisation composition eurythmics early winds theory percussion and more for example the 1988-1989 Catalog lists 42 instructors with their extensive qualifications & background; financial aid information schedules calendars tuition contact details & locations. 1978 - 1984 Group of 30 concert programs for the ESSM including student & faculty performances instrumental offerings & dance programs. Approx. 5 ½" x 8 ½" size; stapled printed softcovers usually 4 pages each giving the pieces played orchestra members & their instruments or soloists. With locations dates; held at the Fine Arts Theatre Southampton College Riverhead Mattituck East Islip H.S. Benjamin House Shoreham-Wading River Library & First Congregational Church of Riverhead. A run of 26 piano recital programs given in 1987 - 2013 by the students of Ann U. Hirsch; given in various private homes on Long Island. Most approx. 7" x 8 ½" size; single folded sheets with four printed sides. 1980-1984 Approx. 30 one or two page programs for the ESSM concerts student recitals often given monthly and a few other miscellaneous programs sponsored by ESSM in the Riverhead NY area: Jazz concerts percussion events concerts by faculty & guests student presentations. With personnel players pieces performed. 1986 A file folder with approx. 30 typed pages of material some on ESSM letterhead. These papers recount the struggle apparently of several months duration of the music school's attempts to restructure the board of directors and executive functions find adequate and sustainable financing and address critical accounting insurance liability and staffing issues which threatened the institution's continued existence. Some of the letters reveal troubling circumstances and finally include the resignation of Ms. Hirsch as the school's executive director and her choice of ceasing any further activities associated with the school including teaching. Other letters document and list various complaints needed changes salary & staffing requirements involving Ms. Hirsch board members and others who were involved in the running of the school. Miscellaneous: A three-ring binder with thumb-guide sections with some dozens of pages; this was Ms. Hirsch' own personal teaching and performance log: Students; Billing; Music; Musicians & Schedule. These sections have handwritten entries lists of student names addresses phone numbers; billing schedule and names columned with payments & various billing tiers. The "Music" section gives student names pieces planning for programs teaching notes; "Musicians" section with names phone numbers musical instruments & often the location of a large group of varied musical talents. With a variety of paper ephemera in a back pocket: newspaper clippings regarding music; MS performance names locations; schedules including for fees; TLS with her teaching offerings; name lists receipts. Approx. 7" x 10" size; black 'leatherette'; worn with tape-repaired spine. 1981 New Directions Resource Center Inc. Diary documenting her rise to adulthood while surviving a flu pandemic working to complete her education and entering a more modern world as a working woman
Southern U.S. 1927. Small ledger bound in pebbled leather over card measuring 7.5 x 4.5 inches. With events taking place across Tennessee Virginia Washington DC North Carolina and other Southern states this journal is comprised of 118 handwritten pages unfolding across a decade. The ledger was clearly a plaything of Ethel and her siblings in earlier years as they have left childish handwriting and notes dated 1911 to the pastedowns and endpapers. However the main content unfolds from 1916-1927 as Ethel claims the book for her diary and leaves us an account of how a girl moved from her teenage years and into womanhood while the world radically changed around her.<br/><br/>Ethel's tone in her opening entry is a reminder that teenage angst and ennui are not new inventions. "April 25 1916. I write this on a Wednesday. Nothing happened. Same old thing school school school." Despite feeling the sameness of her days it doesn't take long for Ethel to open up about the variety of experiences and feelings that really do shape her time. Revivals and Red Cross meetings take up multiple evenings after school; and she loves to read as an escape novels include escapist and sensational romances like George Barr's Nedra 1905 though she describes it as "same old life reading." By 1918 she also starts attending Patriotic Meetings as she reports "Germany's advancing" a concise announcement that is surrounded by news of boys she knows joining their companies and a string of weddings in advance. Global realities hit on the same week she begins school again in September for her observation "first week of school Don't think the lessons will be very hard" is immediately followed by reports of larger hardships a month later: "All the schools are closed on account of the flu. Several people have died with it. Duey Hines was buried yesterday she died in Richmond.in a hospital.Marton Sneed was buried yesterday.he died in Charlotte of Flu." Ultimately the flu grips her in a way the war cannot. "Friday 22 November 1918 Celebrated Armistice.School was opened after five weeks. We went to school for three weeks then it was closed again. December 3 1918. Tuesday all five of us down with the flu." Her December 5 entry is a string of named of friends who died of flu or are badly ailing and she does not write again until the new year.<br/><br/>The entries of 1919 reflect a new level of maturity in Ethel's hand and her voice; as a young woman she now has more freedom and more mobility and she seems rejuvenated by drives and visits with friends new dresses and fashions picnics and shows. Several nearby locations have moving picture shows which seem to replace the Revivals in her heart and her schedule. As she and her friends prepare for commencement in June she reports getting class rings and regalia and a spate of friends' weddings. And then. "January 6 1920. School turned out for the flu Tuesday. A good many cases in town. Uncle Tom sick for two weeks. The flu is awfully bad the people are opening an emergency hospital in our Sunday school." Amidst the tragedy and seeking scapegoats the town erupts in racial violence. "March 8 1920. Arnold's store burned down.negro boy killed last night." In the years the follow Ethel reports courtships getting a job and becoming a modern working woman. Pupil teacher programs like the one Mary Barker was enrolled in had become a popular method of producing teachers at a time when the public's access to education expanded and the demand for instructors was at a high. Such programs functioned like an apprentice system taking a senior pupil typically thirteen years old and putting her in a five year assistantship to her own instructor. Pupil teachers typically took on responsibility for teaching lower classes observing their superiors educate the more advanced students and completing their own educations. By the 1870s these programs had become standardized to ensure proper preparation for instructors Robinson. <br/><br/>Mary's maps trace this process. As she moved from her first to her third year in this notebook the quality and care she puts into her work improves. Her handwriting and attention to detail matures. And her assessments move from Fair to Good and Very Good. Maps in the notebook include nearby locales such as Ireland Scotland and the British Isles as a whole; European nations including Sweden Norway and Prussia as well as eastern Europe and Russia. Mary also maps out "Arabia" and the "Chinese Empire" as well as "Further India" revealing a wide array of changing borders and shifting cultural attitudes. <br/><br/>While Allison does not leave any marker of her class age or school the level of intricacy in her maps suggests she was a senior student or finished instructor. Comprised of 78 manuscript pages of mathematical definitions tables methods and exercises in a single hand with the ownership signature of Elizabeth Young and a running date made intermittently to the footers. Blue paper vernacular binding measuring 8 x 12 inches and stitched at spine; later tape reinforcement. Elizabeth's metric measurements and English currency reveal her to be a student somewhere in the UK. Though the commonness of her name prevents us from locating her specifically in genealogy records the manuscript she left behind reveals much about her.<br/><br/>Elizabeth's notebook is composed in a meticulous cursive hand with neat headers each dated and her name to many of the footers. Section each have a definition leading into rules and from there into word problems and calculations. Each new section progresses in complexity requiring Elizabeth to conduct longer calculations and combine a variety of arithmetical methods multiplication division addition subtraction. Some of these are generic questions about distance or weight; but others urge the student to devotion even as she works in a logical field "How many Hours Minutes and Seconds elapsed since the birth of Christ which is 1808 years ago assuming 365 days to a year". Some put Elizabeth in contact with the world of commerce and supply chain "The yearly export of Brandies from France is said to amount to 25000 tons. What is the value of this quantity at 5s6p per Gallon". Still others prepare her for the maintenance and management of a household or a business "If a servant's wages be 12.12 for 52 weeks how much is that a year" or "If 1728 Elegant wine glasses were bought for £65.2s how must they be sold per dozen or per glass to gain Ten Guineas by the sale of the whole".<br/><br/>A portion of seven pages near the center of the book offers a telling anomaly. While it continues in Elizabeth's neat hand these entries from January-February 1822 list goods purchased by community members from merchants several of whom are women. If these are a part of a school exercise they do not show the marks of it. Rather they appear to be Elizabeth making real-life notations keeping track of accounts for herself or someone else. In this sense the word problems she records and practices are being applied in her own life.<br/><br/>An exceptional document Elizabeth's notebook has research possibilities including but not limited to the history of education in the UK and trans-Atlantic comparisons the history of women's education the effects of class on girls' education mathematics approaches to teaching math to girls historical measurements women in business paleography and women's and gender studies. unknown books

Though the commonness of her name and the absence of a specific date prevents us from locating her in genealogy records the manuscript she left behind reveals much about how and why girls of her age and class were being taught arithmetic.<br/><br/>Caroline's elegant practiced hand suggests that she is a member of the rising middle class and the opening of the book suggests that she is a beginning to intermediate mathematician. At the top of the first page she defines Arithmetic as "the art of computing by numbers" which "has five principal sic rules for this purpose viz. Numeration Subtraction Addition Multiplication and Division." Using this definition she divides her notebook into a section for each providing a definition for that principle plus clear-cut examples of its use in both Simple and Compound formats. Numeration Subtraction and Addition are grouped together at the front; and after these sections conclude Caroline enters in Practical Questions in Compound Addition and Subtraction. These involve word problems involving the exchange of money and the calculation of wet and dry weights cloth measurements and time. She then mirrors this with Multiplication and Division before adding sections on Decimal Fractions more Practical Questions and sections on Federal Money and Simple Interest.<br/><br/>The organization of the manuscript suggests that Caroline copied it out for continued reference where sections are easy to locate and problems clearly illustrate each of the principles. And the emphasis in sample problems on currency conversion monetary exchange and banking implies that her family in some way wanted her to be aware of these concepts.<br/><br/>An exceptional and rich document Caroline's notebook is a rich resource for study including but not limited to the history of women's education middle class education women's domestic use of mathematics women in business paleography genealogy gender studies. unknown books

Girls' Education Corner Julia
Beauty and the Beast a play manuscript "acted by some of the girls that go to Miss Lacy's school
N.P 1854. Complete 28 page handwritten manuscript play prompt drawn directly from Julia Corner's 1854 adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. Stitched at spine and holding though some pages are loose or delicate. Occasional staining largely confined to margins or rear blanks. Composed in one woman's hand in ink throughout with what appears to be a much younger girl's annotation in pencil to the final pages. The text throughout corresponds with Corner's book with the exception of stage directions occasionally being abbreviated or simplified. We have been unable to locate the "Miss Lacy's School" mentioned in the younger girl's note.<br/><br/>Julia Corner the daughter of a printer became a prolific children's author in her time; and her adaptation of Beauty and the Beast was hailed for "creating quite a sensation among all the middling-size children" according to Eliza Cook's Journal from that year. At a time when there was debate about the morality of performance and theater Corner was noted for "wisely sympathizing with child-natures and she declares her belief in the propriety and profit of theatrical amusement among children"; and Eliza Cook's Journal documents instances of girls in particular gravitating toward the play "settling all the characters for all available friends" and performing at home or school Cook Vol 10. Here we see first-hand evidence of this phenomenon: girls in a ladies' school taking on roles and acting them out for classmates. Further research into the school its location and its class of girls would be enlightening -- uncovering for example if there were multiple prompts for girls who could not access Corner's text whether the manuscripts were done as a handwriting exercise in addition to the performance or whether one individual simply copied this play out as a souvenir of the event. The hand used throughout is elegant and well-trained -- seemingly a grown woman whose spelling corresponds with contemporary American rather than British expectations. <br/><br/>The choice of a fairy tale like Beauty and the Beast also deserves study as it promotes particular feminine qualities -- including respect for authority filial affection and self-sacrifice and modesty -- even within the darker setting of fairies sorcery and punishment. <br/><br/>A unique opportunity for research in fields including but not limited to the trans-continental transmission of fairy tales girls' education the history of performance didactic literature and performance in schools gender studies and paleography. unknown books

Girls' Education Elizabeth "Lizzie" Schuh
Language Arts notebook of a young 12 year old girl in school spanning three years of her education
Wisconsin 1893. Hawthorne Composition Notebook #774 measuring 8.25 x 6.75". Comprised of 70 densely written pages largely in pencil in a single hand with penmanship maturing as pages go on across three years. Lizzie's ownership signature to the front wrap designates her as 12 years old at the start of her composition in January 5 1891. Resulting genealogy research has identified her as Elizabeth Lizzie Schuh born in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1879. Census records show that she remained in this area through the end of her life. The present composition book is an opportunity to examine how girls were being educated at the turn of the century in the midwest and how that compares to their counterparts to either coast.<br/><br/>It is telling how little of Lizzie Schuh's preteen lessons are overtly gendered. In many notebooks of this kind from the U.K. and East Coast lessons during this age work to indoctrinate girls into an acceptable femininity even in seemingly innocuous ways. Yet here the lessons seem nearly gender neutral -- a possible sign of coeducational classrooms in her school. Throughout the notebook she writes declarative sentences works on active and passive voice practices tenses and memorizes abbreviations. She composes short essays; in the beginning these tend to focus on some piece of nature such as bees or oranges and they incorporate natural science as well as geographical information. Later essays include original short stories and reports on American figures including Daniel Boone and Andrew Jackson. As she progresses her compositions and her hand move toward adulthood becoming more confident and complex. <br/><br/>Perhaps the largest content focus is on areas of etiquette and behavior -- again a space where one might expect more overt gendering. And yet a section on How to Be Polite for example includes common-sense behavior such as "Try to be kind and unselfish" and "When anyone is writing or reading do not stand behind him or look over his shoulder." Some of the advice seems to encourage a kind of working-class or regional modesty: "Do not talk about dress" and "Do not soil your tongue with slang." Correspondence and letter-writing take up the bulk of the rear of the book. Here Lizzie begins by copying out generic letters likely providing by an instructor so she can learn the formalities both of letters and of posting them; later she imagines letters or copies out letters she herself has written and sent out. These appear to train the children for a variety of relationships including personal and familial communications the management of household and businesses and the maintenance of new acquaintances. <br/><br/>A fascinating glimpse into the language and communication development of a young Midwestern girl as she approached adulthood with research potential including but not limited to English language teaching the intersection among disciplines in elementary and middle school the history of coeducation regional education penmanship and paleography gender studies etiquette and genealogy. unknown books

Lightly toned throughout but otherwise unmarked without the signs of kitchen use common in such books. Scarce in trade OCLC reports no copies of the present work at institutions. <br/><br/>"Around the year 1900 there was a concern about the physical state of the people of Britain. Even though there had been tremendous efforts in the late 19th century to provide better public health housing and education many children were still no more healthy than they had been back in the 1840s. The new Liberal government elected in 1906 passed various measures to try to deal with this problem.and they gave permission for schools to offer meals to their pupils" National Archives. Efforts to consider the link between education and nutrition had begun in the lead-up to the laws however; and the present work is a scarce surviving example of such a cookery. Its compilers note in the preface "This collection of Recipes has been prepared specially for Day and Evening Schools. The instructions of the Education Department.have been embodied." Given the book's brevity it contains a multitude of basic nutritious and locally accessible foods that can be combined for a variety of different meals -- always with an eye to giving growing students the fuel they need to grow and thrive in their schooldays. Women in Medicine Women's Education
Second Annual Announcement and Catalogue of Students of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania.For the Session 1851
Philadelphia: G.S. Harris 1851. First edition. Very Good . Original blue printed paper wraps printed to front. Some chipping and creasing to edges but overall intact and undamaged despite being quite delicate. Light scattered foxing throughout. Ownership signature of the college's original dean N.R. Mosely struck out at the top of the Faculty list on page 4; pencil ticks next to the names of several students listed in the catalogue on page 6. Exceptionally rare OCLC lists copies of this Announcement at only 2 institutions.<br/><br/>Only one year after Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell graduated valedictorian and became the first female M.D. in the U.S. the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania opened its doors. Located in Philadelphia it was the only the second school to open with the mission of training women in medicine -- having been preceded by the New England Female Medical College two years earlier in 1848. Founded by Quaker abolitionist and Underground Railroad activists who believed that women could make exceptional doctors "the college provided rare opportunities for women to teach perform research manage a medical school and with the eventual establishment of the Woman's Hospital in 1861 learn and practice in a hospital setting. It was the longest-lasting all-women medical school in the nation until it became coeducational in 1970" Mandell. The present Announcement predates these growths however showing the roots from which they emerged. One year running and the faculty remain largely male because there has yet to be an inaugural graduating class this would come in 1852; but already a female student Hannah E. Longshore is listed as a Demonstrator in Anatomy. Indeed Longshore and her sister Anna would both be part of the inaugural class of the college with the latter going on the author Discourses to Women in Medical Subjects 1897. Indeed the majority of women listed in this catalogue went on to become doctors even when it took time -- as it did for Hannah W. Ellis and Susanna H. Ellis both listed among the graduates of the 1865 class. 12 pages in all this scarce pamphlet contains Officers Corporators Faculty and Students of the school; an Announcement on the school's missions and accomplishments; information on Specialties available; Terms of enrollment; and a list of required Textbooks. It also conveys the excitement optimism and pride of those involved. "The Faculty of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania are inspired by very different feelings from those that attended their efforts one year ago. Then they were about to enter into an untried path to engage in a great experiment.But that which was an experiment is an experiment no longer.give a woman knowledge commensurate with her natural qualifications enable her to go forth healing the sick and comforting the afflicted and she will bless the world." A rare survivor documenting that pivotal moment when women had been given the chance to prove their intellect rose to the challenge and made the future of the next female students more secure. Resolutions Passed at a Public Meeting of the Inhabitants of Alnwick held the 15th of August 1838

Else an exceptionally clean and seemingly untouched copy of this rare pamphlet advocating for improvements in the early education of children. The only copy known on the market this title does not appear in the modern auction record or at any institutions according to OCLC.<br/><br/>A proposal and prospectus for an Infant School to serve the town of Alnwick and improve the overall level of education within the community. The pamphlet clarifies that the Duke of Northumberland is confirmed as the school's patron; and it outlines how donations and subsciptions from the town will add to the school's endowment. But more importantly it focuses on the communal benefits that will come from citizens' support for children's education regardless of their class. Touting the successes of other Infant Schools in England and abroad in providing "well-regulated nurseries for the children of the poorer classes" the committee also explains that " the most approved system of training will develop the physical powers and improve the health of children from two to six years of age -- to cultivate their intellectual faculties and communicate such knowledge as may be adapted to their infant capacities." The committee asserts that when the larger population begins sending children to school those children will be endowed with a desire to learn and "those attending will feel it as a punishment to be kept from the School" because school "is to the children what the actual business of life is to the man. Here the feelings are manifested and the character is developed" so that infants grow to intelligent and responsible members of the populace. Notably the committee also points out the short term benefits of developing an education system. "To the parents themselves many advantages will accrue from these Schools. Not only will their minds be relieved from much anxiety for the safety of their children but the mother free during the day from the necessity of watching over them will have an opportunity now denied to her of contributing by her labour to their support or of devoting more time to the promotion of their comfort at home." This acknowledgment reveals an important shift in thinking about the economic role of mothers and about women's need for time to accomplish their own work. Commonplace Copy Book of a Young Woman in School
Brimfield MA 1848. Columbian Writing Book #7 Designed for Use in Schools. Blue stitched paper wraps with flag and manicule motifs to front cover and general directions for proper handwriting on rear cover. Completely filled and comprised of 20 densely written manuscript pages in ink and pencil created by Ada N. Kenney of Brimfield Mass who leaves her ownership information in pencil on the front wrap. A lovely and fascinating historical document tracing both the method by which a young woman developed her hand as well as how such lessons served the additional purpose of indoctrinating her into socially-appropriate femininity.<br/><br/>Ada Kenney's copybook contains a neat and precise hand throughout which suggests that she was educated and belonged to the rising middle class. Meticulous and organized Ada breaks her book into two clear sections. The first 9 pages contain precisely copied and repeated sentences such as "Assiduity in labor produces fame and fortune" "Cherish sentiments of charity towards all men" "Discretion of speech is superior to eloquence" and "Immodest words are in all cases indefensible." As the lines get repeated 19 times each in the alphabetical order dictated by the first word it is clear that Ada is being trained in an elegant cursive. Yet the content of the lines and their repetition also serve as lessons to her about the value of female silence virtue and chastity. By the second half of the book Ada commits another 9 pages to carefully copying out poetry; and here her choices push up against the demure repetitions of the previous pages. "Long Fanny Gray" "The Troubedour" Gaily the Troubadour Touched his Guitar and "Highland Mary" are each ballads of romance and flirtation love and loss. These selections suggest a burgeoning interest in courtship and men as well as women's expressions of desire and jealousy. By the final 2 pages Ada shifts into much less organized quotations jotting down random lines of poetry in French and English alongside several names of friends and relatives. <br/><br/>A fascinating and valuable historical document with research potential including but not limited to paleography education theory and practice gender studies literature and poetry and the transmission of folk tales and folk music. unknown books

Girls' Education Commonplace Book Hattie Plegge
Composition Copy Book of a Young Girl including poetry from suffragist Frances Willard and from Oliver Wendell Holmes
N.P. 1898. Brown paper bound composition book comprised of 43 manuscript pages and 6 original crayon drawings by a young girl. First page excised. Ownership stamp of Hattie Plegge used on sheets toward the center of the book; teacher's signature Miss Sewell on nearby middle page. A fascinating and research-rich notebook in which a young girl practiced her hand in ink and pencil by copying out popular song lyrics folk ballads and poetry. <br/><br/>While the composition book of Hattie Plegge contains no overt indication of the girl's geographical location there are signs within her work that point toward the North. Poetry about General Grant and Abraham Lincoln as well as an original crayon drawing of an eagle marked "Union Forever" suggest that her community belonged to the Union during the Civil War. Additionally though she writes no date school year or age in the book her cursive and her drawings suggest that she was under the age of 12 at the time of composition. As she strives to mature her hand Hattie selects a fascinating array of works to copy out with care; and they provide valuable information about the types of music and poetry that were available to an elementary school girl. Some of the selections come from folk songs such as Billy Boy listed in the Roud Folk Song Index. Others were more widely popular tunes of the time including In the Gloaming 1877 On the Banks of the Wabash 1897 and I Guess I'll Have to Telegraph my Baby 1898. Mixed with these are also longer poems. Though Alice Cary's Suppose is listed as a recommended copybook text in Ballads for Little Folk 1874 others take a more adult political leaning as is the case with suffragist Frances Willard's work Grant is Dead copied out twice the second being more careful and Oliver Wendell Holmes' Old Ironsides. Whether the poetic works were provided by a teacher suggested by a parent or chosen by Hattie herself that give a glimpse into the social influences surrounding her. Manuscript school essays and literary excerpts from a young woman enrolled at Parker Academy 1875-1879
Connecticut 1879. Near Fine. Archive of 13 handwritten manuscript essays composed by a Connecticut schoolgirl. Comprised of approximately 40 pages of autograph material written in ink by the same neat hand and signed "Carrie Breed." In addition to titles the majority of essays are dated and include Breed's school name and location. An exciting and interesting look into the work of a diligent young woman excited in particular about the female authors of her own time.<br/><br/>Founded in 1851 Parker Academy was a boarding school that boasted "a healthy location a tidy village an orderly community and a most beautiful valley with pleasant surroundings -- a good place for an institution of education" Historic Buildings of Connecticut. While little else is known about the school the manuscript assignments of Carrie Breed reveal a curriculum that emphasized traditional feminine skills such as polite conversation and elegant handwriting as well as more rigorous subjects including literature composition and botany. The earliest works contained in this archive are three copy exercises assigned to Carrie to practice forming her handwriting; and they speak to her own burgeoning literary interests. The first "Scenes of Childhood" is an assignment drawn from Charles Northend's The American Speaker Being a Collection of Pieces in Prose Poetry or Dialogue Designed for Exercises in School 1856. Yet the two that follow later in the academic year of 1875-76 appear to be selections chosen by Carrie herself as an instructor has added pencil notations "taken from Miss Alcott in Little Women." Published not even a decade before Alcott's novel about sisterhood and women's lives made an impact on girls across America; and here with more assertive mature penmanship Carrie copies out the long passages of "My Beth" and "In the Garrett" written by Alcott's character the aspiring author Jo. <br/><br/>The remaining essays in the archive contain Carrie's own reflections and writing as she matures as a student and thinker. Content is largely focused on moral concepts such as Influence Benevolence and Hospitality although two essays also consider the domestic work of cultivating house plants and performing house cleaning. In two essays Carrie reflects on her relationship to the seasons and to the experience of walking in the woods. The final essay as she nears the end of her time in school and likely reflects on her future as a wife and mother she writes on Filial Trust. As the months and academic years pass it is possible to see her penmanship and her thinking begin to change from those of a girl into those of a young woman with her own mind.<br/><br/>With rich research possibilities in fields including but not limited to the history of women's education paleography contemporary receptions to women's literature the history of American education and gender studies. Manuscript notebook composed by Ida Sylva Wagner a young woman training to become a teacher at the Bloomsburg State Normal School now Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania between 1888-1889. Comprised of 88 pages in ink and pencil blending lecture and reading notes with what appear to be Ida's own drafts of analytic essays practice lesson plans and examination questions. Quarter cloth over marbled boards measuring 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Shelf-wear to extremities and hinges tender but holding. Text block overall tight with mild toning not affecting text. Wagner's ownership signature and school information on front paste-down; second ownership signature along with Wagner's later teaching location on rear paste-down. In Very Good condition overall considering its daily class use and apparent usage as a reference guide during Ida's later teaching career.<br/><br/>Established in 1869 the Bloomsburg State Normal School aimed to provide rigorous teacher training to ensure that regional educators could "teach the youth elements of classical education" Bloomsburg University. State census records show that she would have been 22 at the time of this class and that she later moved to Luzerne County to work as a teacher after graduation. This notebook rigorously documents her work in an advanced Practical Teaching course which provided pedagogical methodology as well as requiring students to put methods into practice by designing usable teaching materials. Ida's notebook is roughly divided into sections with blanks separating each; and they include practical notes including Introductory Consideration Foundations and Principles Length of Recitation Object Lessons and Plan of Lessons as well as sample content for lessons such as Primary Reading Primary Numbers and Rules of Grammar. In her hand Ida reflects on the importance of theory and practice noting "The powers of the child which demand the teacher's attention are the physical the intellectual the moral and the spiritual.before knowing can take place there must be something to know and the thing to be known must affect its appropriate sense." This guiding principle clearly shapes the class and Ida's notes show that she is being trained in the "something to know" for example the 15 pages of vocabulary pronunciations and definitions as well as the "affecting its appropriate sense" for example the 46 initial pages on methods for shaping appropriate lessons. <br/><br/>A dense resource with research possibilities including but not limited to the fields of history of pedagogy history of American higher education women's education and employment and gender studies. Toning throughout; some blank pages entirely or partially torn out. <br/><br/>Detailed student notes apparently from a teacher's training course on the laws governing education in New York state in the late 1890s with briefer sections of notes on the geology and geography of New York; one page is dated 1897. Includes sections on Corporal Punishment "If a teacher wishes to punish a child she may do it without the parents' consent. Parents or teacher may be arrested for undue severity. Cicero said "Do not punish in anger"; the Compulsory Education Law and the authority of truant officers "The law provides that parents may be fined or imprisoned or both"; and the "Physiology Law" requiring that "physiology relating to alcoholic drinks and other narcotics and their effects on the human system shall be taught yearly in all grades in the public schools". <br /> <br />In addition to assorted notes practice tests and copied poems a printed page from the December 12 1891 School Journal is laid in including several sample lesson preparations and "Suggestions to Teachers" on narcotics and stimulants: "There is a general feeling on the part of the little ones under your charge that the use of alcoholic liquors is wrong.To prove to them that its use is deleterious to the mind and body is a hard thing for you to do. They must take this on faith and you are to be the faith-builder for the little ones." <br /> <br />The name of the notebook's author and owner appears in a list of 1900 Normal School graduates in Suffolk County issued as part of the annual New York State Superintendent's Report: Esther Alice Andrews of Patten's Mills successfully completed the English Course. This catalog which lists the school's 24 class offerings demonstrates a focus on the humanities with courses in filmmaking history fine arts and drama. Class offerings were predictably left-leaning with titles like "A Quest for Self" "The Thought of Mao Tse-Tung" and "Black Power and the "Ghetto Uprisings" and the faculty included counterculture figures such as Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg. Collection of 100 items/3” linear approx. belonging to student of Peabody College for Teachers comprised primarily of personal papers relating to the student’s course materials schedules receipts graduation forms and invitations a photograph of classmates social club rosters directories correspondence and promotional material issued by the college including brochures newsletters bulletins solicitations alumni association and other assorted materials. Some toning wear. Generally very good. <br/><br/>Archive a student who received his BS MA and PhD at Peabody as well as that of his wife who also graduated from Peabody with a BS. The couple were both heavily involved in the school members of numerous social organizations and active in student government he was president of the senior class of '26. The promotional material in the collection shows that the college which had reorganized and opened a new campus directly across from Vanderbilt University in 1914 was in the midst of major construction and expansion projects during this time; many pieces show photographs and renderings of new or planned buildings. The college at that time the largest teachers' college in the South was incorporated into Vanderbilt in 1979.
