"Un'etica della personalità" costituisce il volume conclusivo - dopo "Etica generale" e "Filosofia morale" - della trilogia "Una teoria della morale", con la quale Ágnes Heller ha compiuto il suo "quasi-sistema" filosofico. Il libro si apre con l'analisi dell'etica della personalità di Nietzsche, trattata in "Genealogia della morale" e messa in rapporto con il "Parsifal" di Wagner, di cui viene proposta una nuova lettura. Seguono tre dialoghi in cui due giovani filosofi immaginari, Joachim e Lawrence, discutono da diversi punti di vista e confrontandosi con una misteriosa figura femminile, Vera, la possibilità di un'etica della personalità. Il libro si chiude con alcune lettere scambiate tra Sophie Meller, la nonna di Ágnes Heller considerata una figura esemplare, e la nipote Fifi (Heller giovane). Una scrittura filosofica che usa differenti stili, anche letterari, corrisponde a un'etica che si ispira esplicitamente più a Shakespeare, a Goethe e a persone reali che a "teorie". L'etica della personalità s'incarna infatti in donne e uomini concreti, con i loro dubbi, le imperfezioni, gli amori e le amicizie e soprattutto la scelta di vivere una vita buona.
