I Negroni appartenevano ad un agiato casato della borghesia cittadina che aveva costruito le proprie fortune sull'attività mercantile. Avendo il padre preferito la carriera di avvocato prima e magistrato poi costrinse la famiglia a continui spostamenti sino a trasferirsi a Novara dove Carlo risiedette per il resto della sua vita. La città allora era sede di una prestigiosa facoltà di giurisprudenza dove egli si laureò con la lode il 1º maggio 1840. Cresciuto nel clima della restaurazione sabauda conobbe il periodo di fermenti risorgimentali e della composizione dello Stato unitario la fase della sua organizzazione fino alla crisi di fine secolo. Frattanto nel 1849 sposò la cugina Giovannina Bellotti figlia della zia materna che però morì prematuramente nel 1872 a soli 43 anni lasciandolo in completa solitudine senza una discendenza ed in un lutto che segnerà indelebilmente la sua vita rafforzandone l'interesse verso le esigenze dell'infanzia povera e abbandonata. Il periodo che intercorre tra il 1840 e il 1860 vede l'affermarsi del giovane avvocato sia nella pratica forense sia come docente di diritto e procedura civile presso l'Ateneo di Novara prima come ripetitore poi come titolare di una cattedra che tenne fino al 1860 anno in cui gli insegnamenti di giurisprudenza a livello universitario vennero concentrati nel capoluogo piemontese. Contemporaneamente si era dedicato al giornalismo dapprima come scrittore e collaboratore poi nel 1859 fondando il settimanale "La Vedetta" nel quale assunse la carica di condirettore. Negli stessi anni però lo si vide protagonista anche della vita politica essendo stato eletto per la VI legislatura del Parlamento subalpino nel collegio di Domodossola e poi nella VII ormai per il Parlamento del Regno d'Italia nel collegio di Vigevano.

Ci preoccupiamo su come mantenere un impegno di giustizia quando il mondo intero non lo fa. Ci chiediamo quale sia lo scopo di dare senso teorico al mondo quando non possiamo dare un senso alla miseria e al terrore. Possiamo farlo con ironia, asciuttezza o passione, ma in ogni caso troviamo il modo per considerare una parte trascurata del problema come il senso stesso della vita. Concentrarsi su tali questioni non consiste nel sostituire il pensiero critico con il buonismo. Al contrario: i testi qui discussi dovrebbero rivelare che poche cose danno adito a un pensiero di profondità e rigore tali da togliere il fiato e che, soprattutto, danno adito al dialogo, il vero inizio della filosofia": da queste considerazioni prende avvio la riflessione di Susan Neiman sul problema del male. Che senso ha un mondo dove gli innocenti soffrono? Quale fede in un potere divino o nell'umano progresso resiste a non catalogare il male? Il male è forte e radicato o banale e mediocre? Fino a quando l'impossibile può divenire possibile in termini di brutalità e violenza? In un serrato confronto con molte voci della filosofia degli ultimi tre secoli - da Voltaire e Rousseau a Kant, da Leibniz a Schopenhauer, passando per Nietzsche e Freud, fino a giungere ai contemporanei Adorno, Camus, Arendt e Rawls - Susan Neiman dimostra come il male non abbia una essenza costante.

La «fine» e il «finito»: filosofia profana e «fine di vita»
brossura Una "dignità" profana non può che significare la realizzazione della libertà che una filosofia profana ha creato, quest'indeterminazione metafisica, un infinito metafisico che apre alle infinite possibilità dei campi storici dei possibili. Questa libertà profana è la cultura per eccellenza del rispetto dell'altro, un "altro" radicalmente indefinito, che questa cultura della libertà obbliga a costruire storicamente come un'uguaglianza totale. Un "diritto di morire" ne è l'espressione più perfetta, la concezione etica più alta. La libertà viene affermata e nel rispetto dell'uguaglianza tra chi chiede di morire e chi si trova nella situazione di poter aiutare a realizzare tale implorazione. Ma questo "diritto" non è un obbligo, è una possibilità come la cultura profana definisce giuridicamente questo termine, cioè un "diritto". Questa "possibilità" si accompagna con indicazioni giuridiche alla quale danno storicamente tutto il suo senso, ad esempio l'illegittimità di comportamenti simili agli "accanimenti terapeutici" o invece l'incoraggiare "cure palliative". Prima di tutto, però, questa "possibilità" apre a una ricomposizione della relazione tradizionalmente gerarchica, "paternalista", tra un medico e i suoi pazienti, a una cultura dell'uguaglianza che significa rispetto dell'altro e l'etica della dignità. I medici sono chiamati ad affrontare questa vera rivoluzione culturale (comma 3, art. 1, legge 219/2017), il loro sapere non può ovviamente diventare il sapere dei pazienti, ciò che implica una relazione, sotto questo aspetto, ovviamente gerarchizzata. Questo squilibrio, tuttavia, non può significare né giustificare un potere gerarchico, ma al contrario un'uguaglianza etica, la dignità dei pazienti che incita, in queste tragiche situazioni, medici e pazienti a trovare insieme, in un mutuo rispetto, la trascendenza storica alla quale la libertà-immanenza profana ci invita.

Ma ci chiede di allenarci per "essere in forma", per affrontare senza paura tutte le situazioni della vita, testimoniando la nostra fede. Prendendo spunto dall'invito di Papa Francesco, Cari giovani, siate veri "atleti di Cristo"! A New Moral System of Geography containing an Account of the different Nations ancient and modern. including a Description of each Country and their respective Productions.
Bath: Printed by S. Hazard for G. Riley London 1790. Joints fragile but a good copy. Square 16mo with an engraved frontispiece two engraved plates four full-page woodcuts in the text and altogether 48 circular woodcut vignettes; in a simple contemporary sheep-leather binding unlettered spine banded in gilt. The extremely rare first edition of the earliest educational work to refer to settled Australia including p. 181 onwards a seven-page description of Botany Bay 'being now a part of the world allotted for civilization'. Ferguson knew only the Mitchell Library's copy of this first edition which was printed in Bath for the London stationer George Riley and has the series-title for the Historical Pocket Library in which series this is designated the fifth title devoted to Geography. The final two pages of Riley's advertisements in this edition show that he was chiefly a stationer rather than a bookseller; in fact the advertisement mentions no printed books at all. Ferguson also knew only the National Library's copy of the London-printed second edition of the same year though we now know of three other copies. The London version was completely reset with very different pagination but used the same frontispiece which has Riley's imprint and is dated 18 July 1789. It was printed for Riley in London but also sold by Hazard in Bath as well as by Watson and Elder in Edinburgh. The State Library of South Australia featured their copy of the second edition of the book in their exhibition Australia on the map 1606-2006 online resource evidently no longer to be found online noting that 'the lengthy title of this little book gives a very full idea of the contents. The author writes in the Preface that every effort has been made to 'select the most interesting and essential to give the student an idea of this indispensable science' i.e. geography. Also included is an overview of the solar system based on Copernicus. Within the text the chapter on Botany Bay deals with the Aboriginal people and their food and tools and with the kangaroo which in 1790 still intrigued many in Europe. The frontispiece shows Britannia lion crouched at her feet and a globe alongside overseeing the education of the youth of England. 'A new moral system of geography is an example of the books along with games and dissected puzzles which were being produced in England to stimulate the teaching of children by making learning fun. This followed John Locke's theory on learning through play that he propounded in 1693 and which was further stimulated by the work of Abbé Gaultier a French educator who fled the French Revolution and established a school in England.
