Ohne die Widersprüche in Nietzsches Denken zu verdecken oder überzubewerten, trägt Stern Bausteine zu dessen System zusammen: das neue Geschichtskonzept der Ewigen Wiederkehr, das den Fortschrittsglauben zerstört. Die Welt ist zwar sinnlos, ziellos, hoffnungslos — soll aber emphatisch bejaht werden. Die Moralität der äußersten Anstrengung schafft neue Verbindlichkeiten nach dem Tode Gottes.
