Nat Love 1854–1921 “wrote the only book-length autobiography left by a black cowboy. With typical frontier braggadocio tells about his cow-punching days following the Civil War and his friendships with Bat Masterson Billy The Kid and Frank and Jesse James.†Blockson</p> <p>Born into slavery in Tennessee Love moved to Kansas due to the limited opportunities offered in the economically desolate Reconstruction-Era South. He then moved to Texas where he worked as a cowboy on the ranch of Sam Duval in the panhandle. Later Love worked on the Gallinger Ranch in southern Arizona.</p> <p>With the westward expansion of the railroad Love realized that the golden age of cowboy life was passing and took a job as a Pullman car porter. Toward the end of his life he became a bank guard in Los Angeles.</p> <p>Many of Love’s statements about his wild adventures were audacious and they often stretched the truth. In this regard they were similar to claims made by other larger-than-life Western memoirists of the period.
