[VIENNA UPRISING] LOVE, Paul
Die Befestigung von Wien gegen anrükende Feind. The Fortification of Vienna Against Opposing Enemies.
Wien: Gredruckt bei Joseph Ludwig 1848. First Edition. Broadside 50.75x42cm. printed blackletter; previous folds two corners neatly clipped not approaching text else Very Good to Near Fine. Proposal issued shortly before the Vienna Uprising of October 1848 during which violence broke out between the laboring class of the city and the Hapsburg army as the latter was trying to leave in order to quell the Hungarian Revolution. Löve most likely a university student at the time proposes that Vienna would best be defended if the walls surrounding the inner city were to be dismantled they would be irreparable if damaged by enemy bombardment and the moat filled in for building development. Unlocated in OCLC or KVK though noted in James E. Walsh 1848 Austrian Revolutionary Broadsides and Pamphlets 1976 p. 143 dating the broadside to June 31 1848. Löve issued another five or six titles listed in Walsh one signed in type "Redacteur I der Studentenzeitung" editor of the student newspaper; another "Redakteur des Stürmers" editor of "The Strikers". Gredruckt bei Joseph Ludwig unknown

Angelou, Maya; Eugene B Redmond; Ruth B Love
Maya Angelou's House: Valley Rd. Winston-Salem Photo album
Winston-Salem NC: No publisher 1980. Very Good. Photo album containing candid snapshots of Maya Angelou and her friends and associates. Fifty-seven photos of which 23 are in color and 34 in black and white under glassine on sticky album pages. Bound in padded red and gold paper-covered boards handlettered label sticker to spine internal spiral binding. Very Good with rubbed lower edges fading to spine and split to paper at lower rear joint. Pages toned adhesive coating weak; most pictures have shifted around and are loose behind the glassine.
Most of the photos were taken at the same event at Angelou's house during the 1980s though several near-duplicates depict Eugene B. Redmond and Ruth Love standing in front of an art installation. One street scene portrait of Redmond is inscribed on the back: "To Ruth - Best Imani. Street scene New York Fall '85."
Maya Angelou moved to the North Carolinian city of Winston-Salem after accepting a lifetime professorship at Wake Forest University in 1981 which she held until her death in 2014. Angelou who appears in eleven of these photos found the experience transformative. She once told a USA Today reporter that “I’m not a writer who teaches. I’m a teacher who writes. But I had to work at Wake Forest to know that.†
Among Angelou's many guests was the poet and professor Eugene B. Redmond a longtime close friend who appears twenty-four times in this album and who stamped many of the photos on verso with “Compliments Poet-Eugene B. Redmond.†The educator Ruth Love appears in forty of the photographs. As the Superintendent of the Oakland School system in the late 1970s she created programming to bring prominent African Americans including Maya Angelou face to face with students in order to inspire and educate them. The two women maintained their friendship and traveled to Ghana together in 1993.
An intimate look into the personal life of one of the greatest figures of American writing touching in its ordinariness. One Blood: The Death and Resurrection of Charles R. Drew

One Blood traces both the life of the famous black surgeon and blood plasma pioneer Dr. Charles Drew and the well-known legend about his death. On April 1 1950 Drew died after an auto accident in rural North Carolina. Within hours rumors spread: the man who helped create the first American Red Cross blood bank had bled to death because a whites-only hospital refused to treat him. Drew was in fact treated in the emergency room of the small segregated Alamance General Hospital. Two white surgeons worked hard to save him but he died after about an hour. In her compelling chronicle of Drew's life and death Spencie Love shows that in a generic sense the Drew legend is true: throughout the segregated era African Americans were turned away at hospital doors either because the hospitals were whites-only or because the 'black beds' were full. Love describes the fate of a young black World War II veteran who died after being turned away from Duke Hospital following an auto accident that occurred in the same year and the same county as Drew's. African Americans are shown to have figuratively 'bled to death' at white hands from the time they were first brought to this country as slaves. By preserving their own stories Love says they have proven the enduring value of oral history.

Insurance & handling is included free. Spencie Love

General Interest/Race Relations

Insurance & handling is included free.
