African American Intellectual History W. E. B. Du Bois Black Folk Then and Now First Edition 1939 Study of African and Diaspora History
1939. Du Bois W. E. B. Black Folk Then and Now published in 1939 presents a historical and sociological study of African and African Diaspora history written by one of the leading intellectual figures of the twentieth century Civil Rights movement. Du Bois historian sociologist and co founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People wrote the work in response to long standing claims within Euro American scholarship that people of African descent lacked a coherent historical tradition. The book develops Du Bois's analysis of the "color line" a concept he identified as the defining global problem of the twentieth century and situates the history of African peoples within a broader narrative of world history and modern racial inequality.

Du Bois W. E. B. Black Folk Then & Now: An Essay in the History and Sociology of the Negro Race. New York: Henry Holt 1939. First edition first printing. In this work Du Bois traces the development of African civilizations and the global African diaspora beginning with societies of the African continent and continuing through the Atlantic slave trade and the emergence of modern racial hierarchies. The text discusses major geographic regions including the Niger Congo and Nile river systems before examining the forced migration of Africans across the Atlantic and the social and economic structures that shaped Black life in the Americas. Du Bois also incorporates biographical discussions of significant historical figures including Toussaint Louverture Benedict the Moor and Alexandre Dumas.

The publication reflects Du Bois's broader intellectual project of documenting the history of people of African descent across continents and historical periods. His scholarship combined historical narrative with sociological analysis in order to challenge dominant racial theories circulating in early twentieth century academic and political discourse. The work also foreshadows Du Bois's later involvement in international Pan African movements that emphasized the shared historical experience of African and diaspora communities. Octavo volume measuring approximately 9.5 × 5.5 inches. 401 pages. Original cloth binding in publisher's dust jacket. Dust jacket shows wear and chipping at the upper front cover with some paper loss along the top edge; previous ownership name on pastedown. Text block remains clean and well preserved. Very good condition overall with the dust jacket in fair condition and an important work of African American historical scholarship. unknown

Black Folk Then & Now:An Inquiry Into The Past Which Africa Has Played In World History. A Foundational Text in Pan-Africanist by W.E.B. Du Bois First Edition 1947
1947. African American Black Folk Then & Now:An Inquiry Into The Past Which Africa Has Played In World History. New York: The Viking Press 1947. First Edition. 276 pages. Hardcover original cloth binding in publisher's dust jacket. 8vo. Written by the "father of pan-Africanism" only two years after his final appearance as an organizer and theorist of the Pan-African Congress this book explores Africa's role in world history and the creation of the modern world. In this book Du Bois a pioneering historian and sociologist as well as a founding member of the NAACP takes aim at then-contemporary European scholarship on Africa. Responding to a tradition which viewed Africa as "primitive" and "backwards" Du Bois reinstated Africa's central place in world history as post-war independence sentiments were beginning to rumble under African soil. Rather than a history of Africa alone this book stands out as a landmark study which upended the western understanding of the African continent. Not priced clipped very light wear to dust jacket. Overall very good condition. The World and Africa remains a central work in Du Bois' canon as well a foundational text in pan-Africanist thought written at the eve of the decolonization period. unknown

Praised upon its publication but subsequently ignored by scholars the work was eventually re-evaluated as was the history of Reconstruction. Morals and Manners Among Negro Americans
Atlanta: Atlanta University Publications 1914. 1st. Softcover. Very Good. Softcover. First edition. 137pp. Printed gray wrappers. Minor chipping on a few leaves. Corner of title page discreetly reinforced with archival tape.

This volume issued under the patronage of the Trustees of the John F. Slater Fund records the proceedings of the 18th Atlanta University Conference held on May 26 1913.

Directed and largely authored by W.E.B. Du Bois the series of annual Atlanta University Studies 1896–1914 represents the first sustained data-driven investigation into the social economic and educational conditions of African Americans in the post-Reconstruction South.

Conceived by Atlanta University president Horace Bumstead and carried forward by Du Bois these conferences brought together scholars educators and reformers to address pressing issues of Black life with empirical rigor years before the professional discipline of sociology was fully established in the United States.

Though Du Bois’s name often appears only as editor his hand shaped nearly every aspect of these publications. Today surviving copies are scarce; most were later rebound making intact examples like this especially desirable. This 1913 report stands as both a landmark in African American scholarship and a tangible artifact of Du Bois’s groundbreaking sociological project at Atlanta University.

Very rare.
