‎Efforts for Social Betterment among Negro Americans‎

‎1909. First Edition. DU BOIS W. E. Burghardt ed. Efforts for Social Betterment among Negro Americans. A Social Study made by Atlanta University under the patronage of the Trustees of the John F. Slater Fund. Atlanta: Atlanta University Press 1909 i.e. 1910. Octavo original printed gray self-wrappers; pp. 136. $1500.First edition of a major work edited by Du Bois in the landmark Atlanta University Publication Series directed by him central to his creation of ""the first American school of sociology"" here documenting the importance of Black churches women's clubs and Black newspapers and highlighting the disenfranchisement of Black voters calling it a form of ""political serfdom"" with many full-page and in-text illustrations charts and graphs very elusive in fragile original wrappers.Du Bois gave ""voice to Black people's historical travail in powerful and mythic ways"" New York Times. On the night he died in exile in Ghana 250000 Americans were gathering at the Lincoln Memorial in the 1963 March on Washington. The next day a deep silence fell over the crowd when Roy Wilkins announced the death of Du Bois declaring ""his was the voice calling you to gather here today in this cause."" When he had arrived in Georgia to join the Atlanta University faculty the 29-year-old Du Bois was already the first African American to earn a PhD from Harvard and had ""completed a pioneering sociological investigation"" The Philadelphia Negro 1898. His years in Atlanta ""were by his own admission decisive ones… he attracted national achievements that placed him on the frontier of social science scholarship… although he was ignored by white Atlanta he organized a frontal assault on all efforts to deny African Americans first-class citizenship. In a real sense his tenure at Atlanta University was the final preparation for a career that ultimately touched several continents"" Gatewood W.E.B. Du Bois 206-8. It was there that Du Bois created ""the first American school of sociology"" and demonstrated how an ""all-Back institution located in the heart of the Jim Crow American south… pushed back against individual and institutional forces demanding that it conform to racist policies that were implemented at most institutions."" He edited the yearly Atlanta University Publications 1898-1909 and co-edited four issues with Augustus Granville Dill 1910-1913. Edited by Du Bois this very elusive first edition of No. 14 in that series Efforts for Social Betterment among Negro Americans is based on detailed ""questionnaires census data and reports"" that covered the complexity of Black life. It documents the work of Black churches ""the only African institution to survive the institution of slavery"" as well the importance of women's clubs ""artistic training for Black youth"" child care for working parents and the vitality of Black newspapers. Efforts for Social Betterment particularly notes ""the discrepancy in the level of funding for Black and White public schools"" and the disenfranchisement of Black voters calling it a form of ""political serfdom"" Wright First American School of Sociology 81-89 52-4. Its concluding pages plainly state: ""the darkest spot on our national escutcheon is race prejudice… the civilized world stands aghast at the crimes committed almost daily by race hatred in this country."" ‎Negro Church‎

‎1903. First Edition. Signed. DU BOIS W. E. Burghardt. The Negro Church. Report of a Social Study made under the direction of Atlanta University; together with the Proceedings of the Eighth Conference for the Study of the Negro Problems held at Atlanta University May 26th 1903. Atlanta: Atlanta University Press 1903. Octavo original printed gray self-wrappers respined; pp. 212. $2800.First edition of a rare association copy of Du Bois' groundbreaking work on the Black Church with owner signature of Adelaide M. Cromwell influential scholar and granddaughter of renowned 19th-century Black historian John Wesley Cromwell a peer of Du Bois this 1903 work published the same year as his famed ""Talented Tenth"" manifesto key in affirming Du Bois' role in moving ""the Atlantic University Studies to the frontier of social science research virtually single-handedly.""The year Du Bois arrived in Atlanta in 1897 to begin his tenure at Atlanta University he became director of the annual series of conferences and primary editor of the accompanying publications. Particularly ""in both Negro Church 1903 and Negro Family 1908… Du Bois would push the Atlantic University Studies to the frontier of American social science research virtually single-handedly"" Levering Lewis W.E.B. Du Bois 160. There and in his own early writings ""Du Bois created sociological and historical works of lasting significance… that set wholly new standards for the sociological study of Black Americans"" New York Times. In Atlanta already ""one of the 20th century's intellectual heavyweights"" he stood in ""the vanguard of social science scholarship in America"" but remained ignored by the academy as the critically underfunded Atlanta University was routinely bypassed by white philanthropists Levering Lewis 713 162.It was in Atlanta that Du Bois created ""the first American school of sociology"" Wright First American School of Sociology 80. Yet in 1910 when he realized ""his presence on the faculty of Atlanta University negatively affected the school's philanthropic outreach efforts… he chose to resign from the faculty."" Du Bois increasingly ""saw that 'the cure wasn't simply telling people the truth it was inducing them to act on the truth.' It was not enough to determine truth scientifically; it had to be implemented politically."" This became a cornerstone of his often tumultuous always consequential life and career. Nearly five decades after leaving Atlanta the news of his death across the world in Ghana caused the 250000 Americans gathered at the 1963 March on Washington to grow suddenly silent—a ""moment almost cinematic in its poignancy""—as Roy Wilkins declared: ""his was the voice calling you to gather today in this cause"" Levering Lewis 162 2. First edition first printing: Atlanta University Publications No. 8; with numerous in-text charts and graphs. Partington 2332. Work 408. Not in Blockson. With owner signature of Adelaide M. Cromwell tipped in from the library binding it was bound into at one time this association copy belonged to the prominent Black historian and sociologist who followed in the footsteps of her grandfather John Wesley Cromwell a pioneering 19th-century lawyer author and civil rights activist. Dr. Cromwell Hill an influential scholar and activist was a distinguished professor at Boston University and pivotal co-founder of its African Studies Program—only the second in the country. In addition to authoring major works on Black history she also served as the first African American appointed Library Commissioner in Massachusetts. ‎United States Court of Appeals. Motion‎

‎1956. First Edition. ROBESON Paul. United States Court of Appeals. District of Columbia. Paul Robeson Plaintiff-Appellant against John Foster Dulles Defendant-Appellee. Motion for Leave to File Brief and Brief Amici Curiae. New York: Hecla Press 1956. Octavo original cream printed self-wrappers staple bound as issued; pp. i-ii 1 2-25 1. $2500.First official edition of Robeson's 1956 amicus curiae brief for the long-denied restoration of his passport a seminal document in the history of constitutionally protect freedom of speech and the right to travel submitted by W.E.B. Du Bois and others declaring ""to silence Paul Robeson is to immobilize an eloquent devoted determined and respected fighter for the full emancipation of the Negro people"" with accompanying facsimile of letter signed by Eslanda Good Robeson one-page document and laid-in envelope with typed address.Fearless in his lifelong struggle for Black rights ""Robeson's achievements as a stage actor movie star and singer are individually outstanding but collectively astounding'"" ANB. In 1946 Robeson had challenged President Truman for refusing ""to sponsor legislation against lynching by telling him that in the absence of federal protection Blacks would exercise their right of armed self-defense"" Buhle Encyclopedia of the American Left 655. Subsequently the State Department ""issued a 'stop notice' at all ports to prevent Robeson from leaving the country"" and he was ordered to surrender his passport. When he refused it was revoked. The FBI CIA and State Department targeted him as a communist yet the passport decision did not require a non-communist affidavit and did not charge him with membership in the Communist Party. A stated reasoning was that his ""frequent criticism of the treatment of Blacks in the U.S. should not be aired in foreign countries."" To the government ""it was a family affair"" Dudziak Cold War Civil Rights 62. Robeson and his wife Eslanda Goode Robinson made repeated appeals for the reinstatement of his passport and were denied. In July 1955 Robeson and his attorneys again hopeful reapplied and were granted a meeting with the State Department which still refused to alter its decision. With that Robeson issued a public statement saying he was deemed a ""'threat' a security risk because he told the truth"" Duberman Paul Robeson 434. The following year Robeson's attorneys made this amicus curiae brief on behalf of W.E.B. Du Bois Herbert Aptheker Eslanda Goode Robeson and others. ""To silence Paul Robeson""it states ""is to immobilize an eloquent devoted determined and respected fighter for the full emancipation of the Negro people. And it is precisely for the purpose of gagging Mr. Robeson that the Secretary of State has withheld his passport… in violation of the first fifth eighth and ninth amendments… and the thirteenth fourteenth and fifteenth amendments."" The brief links Robeson with Black leaders such as Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown in the Black ""struggle for full citizenship."" That fight now continues it notes ""in a titanic struggle with white supremacists."" Referencing Brown v. Board of Education 1952 the brief asserts segregation persists in schools ""supported in part by U.S. funds"" and notes ""U.S. Senators with impunity urge defiance of the Federal law."" The government's refusal to reinstate Robeson's passport ""casts the Federal government as an ally of those southern state governments which are desperately trying to turn back the pages of history and which deny to the Negro people basic elemental rights."" Once again however his appeal for the passport's reinstatement was denied. In 1958 the Supreme Court in Kent v. Dulles found that ""the right to travel is part of the ''liberty' of which the citizen cannot be deprived without due process of law."" That same year Robeson's passport was finally restored to him. To his biographer America's ""failure to set its house in order to ransom its own promise brought out in him… uncompromising anger a dogged refusal to bow… that a man so deeply loved all over the world could evoke in his own country such an outpouring of fear and anger may be the central tragedy—America's tragedy—of Paul Robeson's story"" Duberman xiii.
