Du Bois, W E B (Du Bois, W E Burkhardt)
Dusk of Dawn An Essay Toward An Autobiography of a Race Concept
New York: Harcourt Brace 1940 First edition of W. E. B. DuBois' autobiography. This is an ex-library book from the oldest library building in the United States with a very rare dustjacket red topstaining. 8vo. 334 pp. Brown cloth binding. At seventy-two Dr. DuBois wrote a stirring and noble record of his life. He takes us from his boyhood in New England where he was born of French Dutch and African blood and where he lived a polite and serene life in Great Barrington Masschusetts to his first youthful glimpse of the color and spirit of his race in the Deep South. We watch his education at Harvard where he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy his two years at the Universities of Paris and Berlin his fourteen years as Professor of Economics and History at Atlanta University his thirty-one years as director of Publications and Research for the N.A.A.C.P. and his editorship of Crisis since 1909. We follow his experiences during the World War and his participation in such causes celebres as the Scottsboro case and his work for anti-lynching legislation. Dusk of Dawn is the culmination of a distinguished career of letters and scholarship. It is written in the fullness of an unusual and crusading life. It is an American document -- the history of a native son who sees in the dusk of his days the dawn of a new and better existence for his people. Light foxing to endpapers library discard stamps pocket removed from rear endpaper. Library label on bottom of spine. 1/8" chipping at top of spine two chips at bottom of dustjacket paperclip indentation on ffep brownspotting to page edges. We have chosen not to remove the library cover to protect the rare dustjacket. Despite ex-library a very good copy of this rare and important book. Harcourt Brace hardcover

Mansart Builds a School
New York: Mainstream Publishers 1959. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. A bookplate on the front pastedown paper over the front hinge cracked but the hinge is still tight a very good copy lacking the dust jacket. Inscribed by Du Bois to a fellow author: "For Van Wyck Brooks W.E.B. Du Bois May 26 1960." Du Bois' Brooklyn address is penciled below the inscription. Although the long careers of both Harvard-educated authors overlapped for many decades Brooks and Du Bois apparently did not know one another well until relatively late in their lives. In 1948 Brooks made a very formal appeal to Du Bois in the Committee of One Thousand's efforts to fight the existence of HUAC. But over the following decade they evidently got to know each other much better; Brooks spoke at the 1958 installation of the Zorach bust of Du Bois at the Schomburg Collection. The second book in Du Bois' Black Flame trilogy. Mainstream Publishers hardcover
