‎Cruikshank, George.‎

‎POINTS OF HUMOR.‎

‎pp. 47, (1) + Ten etched plates. Top edge gold gilt. Half morocco leather over marbled boards binding. Front board recently detached. 8vo. Apparently the second part of two., with 10 of the twenty etched plates. A famous Victorian satirical work, illustrated by Cruikshank. First Edition. Cohn 176. George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was a humorist of the school of Hogarth, and is considered by some to be one of the best that Britain has produced. He was the son of a Scottish painter, Isaac Cruikshank, and apparently his talent was such that he could draw as soon as he could write. From the beginning he was concerned with satire. At a young age he achieved public notice by painting theatre backdrops (the first was for Drury Lane Theatre, London). In the early 1820s he made etchings for the pamphleteer William Hone, but his political caricature work was soon overtaken by his work as a book illustrator. Life in London (1821) was followed by Tales of Irish Life (1824), and then a series of further books at an ever increasing rate. His best known work was for Charles Dickens, starting with Sketches by Boz and reaching its zenith, perhaps, with Oliver Twist. Among his large number of other illustrated books were a Grimm's Fairy Tales (1827), a Pilgrim's Progress and Paradise Lost, and seven novels by Harrison Ainsworth. Despite his large oeuvre, more than 15,000 drawings in his lifetime, Cruikshank was never well off. He required financial assistance from friends in 1866 (led by Ruskin), and late in life relied on a modest pension from the civil list and a Turner annuity from the Academy. **PRICE JUST REDUCED SW3‎

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) English author, noted primarily for these highly descriptive letters. She was the daughter of the first Duke of Kingston. In 1739 she left her husband and went to live on the Continent. She is also remembered for her quarrel with Pope, who had once been her ardent admirer and who attacked her viciously in his poetry. Horace Walpole disliked her also and depicted her as a greedy, heartless eccentric. However, recent studies have defended her as a brilliant woman struggling for emancipation. Her letters were first published in 1763. Interesting and scarce. W141‎

This work was also published under the title, 'The Romance of American Landscape.' Sabin 70958; Wright, II, 2030. "During the first half of the nineteenth century artists fanned out across the northeastern United States to find aesthetic inspiration in nature (and historic architecture). Thomas Addison Richards (1820-1900) was one of the few who traveled extensively in the South. Through his paintings, illustrated magazine articles, and guidebooks, Richards introduced the natural beauty and distinct characteristics of this region to a national audience. Born in London, his family immigrated to America in 1831, moving first to Hudson, New York, and then to Charleston, South Carolina. Around 1837 they settled in the small town of Penfield, Georgia, the original site of Mercer University, where Richards's father, a Baptist minister, served as a charter trustee. In 1838 the young Richards left for Augusta, where for the next two years he offered lessons in painting and drawing and contributed travelogues about his rambles around Georgia to the Augusta Mirror, a local literary magazine. In 1841, sketchbook in hand, he left Augusta to travel around the South in search of picturesque scenes. In 1844 he settled permanently in New York City, where he gave art lessons from his studio and began taking classes at the National Academy of Design. He subsequently became a full academician and served as the institution's corresponding secretary from 1852 to 1892. Many of the paintings he regularly contributed to academy exhibitions were romantic landscapes of the South. Throughout the 1850s Richards penned numerous articles and books. He supplied illustrated articles based on his travels around the Northeast to Graham's Magazine (Philadelphia) and the Knickerbocker (New York). For the weekly Southern Literary Gazette, published by his brother out of Athens, Georgia, and Harper's New Monthly Magazine (New York), he submitted essays on his travels through the South. Richards enlivened his travelogues with personal anecdotes, legendary stories, tips on lodging, and engravings after his on-site drawings. In1854 a series of engravings after Richards's southern sketches appeared in Romance of American Landscape / American Scenery. In 1857 Richards married Mary E. Anthony, an author of children's stories. Thereafter, Richards concentrated on teaching and painting. He served as the first director of the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York, a position he held from 1858 to 1860, and taught at New York University from 1867 to 1887. At the National Academy and Brooklyn Art Association he exhibited still lifes and landscapes, often of tranquil southern scenes. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! NW 45 BINDINGS‎

‎Lucan (Marcus Annaus Lucanus); Marmontel, Jean Francois.‎

‎LA PHARSALE DE LUCAIN, Traduite en Francois par M. Marmontel.‎

‎Two volumes. I. [1], LXXIX, 304. II. [1], 415, [1](Errata), [4](Approbation) + Eleven (11) engraved plates. French text. 8vo. 200 mm. Edges decorated red. Some age stain and foxing. Original decoratively mottled full leather bindings. Spines worn, but some gilt remains. Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (39-65 CE), was an important Roman poet, born in Cordoba. One of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period, his youth and speed of composition set him apart from others. The Pharsalia is an epic poem on the Roman Civil War. It is considered the greatest epic in Latin after the Aeneid. It depicts the Battle of Pharsalus (48 BC) where Julius Caesar defeated Pompey. Lucan's poetic talent apparently aroused the jealously of the Emperor Nero. After the publication of Pharsalia the Emperor forbade him to write, or even plead in the courts, and then later compelled him to commit suicide for alleged treason. The engraved plates in this edition are mostly by the famous French engraver and book illustrator, Hubert Francois Gravelot (1699-1733). The original art was by: Antoine-Jean Duclos; Emanuel Jean Nepomucene Ghendt; Noel Le Mire; Francois Denis Nee; Jean Francois Rousseau; and Jean-Baptiste Blaise Simonet. See: Schweiger II, 568; Cohen & DeRicci 662. Apparently not in Ray. Very good. CHEST 2/1.‎

‎Bartlett, William Henry. Engraved by T. Turnbull.‎

‎[Syria, Holy Land, Asia Minor] Seleucia (caption title). [ORIGINAL STEEL ENGRAVED PRINT].‎

‎Original single-sheet steel engraving of a very fine quality. Overall size ca. 215 x 270 mm. Image size ca. 130 x 190 mm. A two-line caption engraved at bottom in elegant handtooled open-face and italic types. Engraved Artist's and Engraver's signatures underneath image. Engraved Publisher's line below. The print is in its original state, trimmed and gilded on three sides. It is printed with warmer ink, somewhat more dramatic in mood, with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. In overall fine condition. Preserved in pH-balanced, acid-free Renaissance archival paper. ~ A delicately executed steel engraving, representing a major illustrative work on 19th century Palestine, Syria, and Asia Minor. William Henry Bartlett (born London, 1809) was one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He travelled extensively throughout Britain, the Americas, and the Middle East, producing his work on location. In 1854 he made his last trip to the Holy Land; he died of fever on board a French ship on his return voyage to England. Bartlett's primary concern was to extract the picturesque aspects of a place and render "lively impressions of actual sights", as he wrote in the preface to "The Nile Boat" (London, 1849). His work became widely known through the numerous engravings after the original drawings and paintings he made. The interest in these engravings today is as much for the exquisite quality of the rendering and presentation of the architecture of the period, as it is for the representation of the landscape. Published in 1836 by Peter Jackson, Late Fisher, Son & Co. of London, it was originally accompanied by descriptions written by John Carne.‎
