While this is not a dated first edition - there is no date other than the neat inscription on the front endpaper which clearly states '1956' - the unsullied specially made paper has gorgeous clean pulls of the 26 engravings. So this might just be a first printing. There is a blind stamp of a former owner on the same page too. These are faults but they are not intrusive. The jacket has protected the decorated cover boards which look fresh and beautiful. Boyd Hanna was a superb craftsman and the engravings are all on the right hand pages. FAUST - Rare Bound Set
1820 Faust was Goethe's most celebrated creation with international editions films and books. This is a complete set of the 26 engravings Moritz Retzsh produced and it has no words in it no printing details no publisher. What it does have is a fabulous set of the original plate pulls complete with plate marks. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter draughtsman and etcher. This is in a way a fine example of what is now called the graphic novel. The 26 etched pictures tell the story and words are not needed. In Germany there were many such books without words and this one in particular influenced the English Pre Raphaelites. This volume is in its original binding with a leather spine which turns around to the marbled cover boards. The corners are leather also and the spine has five subtly raised bands and no title. A much poorer copy of this was featured in the exhibition of Pre Raphaelites at Tate Britain. This is by no means a fine copy. It has been used and looked at probably a great deal over the last 200 years or so and the leather is worn the marbled covers are patinated and there is a mixture of names and an inscription on the front end paper. Small folio loose-bound in salmon-colored wraps with black title and device on front housed in a protective outer cover of paper-covered cloth boards with a gilt title on the spine. Included are 21 original engravings 11 of which are full-page. The volume is signed by the engraver and the publisher André Gonin and is a limited edition edition number 159/174. Condition: Very Good. There is some loss of paper covering at the joints of the outer cover along with water staining at bottom left and general light marking and discoloration. The inner wraps have a 1 ¼ in. split to the bottom front joint and very minor wear to the corners and the head of the spine.
