An informative look at the art of carpentry by craftsman-woodworker Arthur Romney Green 1872-1945 who like Gill and Pepler was influenced by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. One of 160 copies octavo size 55 pp. The thirteenth publication from The Allen Press this story by Honore de Balzac 1799-1850 was originally titled "Maitre Cornelius" and first appeared in 1831 in the "Revue de Paris"; it was published in book form in 1832. Balzac was a prolific French novelist and playwright perhaps best remembered today for "Eug�nie Grandet" his first bestseller; in this famous wayward love story set in fifteenth-century France Marie de Saint-Vallier daughter of Louis XI is unhappily married and becomes entangled in an unusual love affair. The book features four wood engravings by the incomparable Mallette Dean 1907-1975 painter and illustrator who worked for most of his career in San Francisco on projects such as the WPA Mural Project the murals in Coit Tower and for fifteen years illustrated books for the Grabhorn Press and other Bay-Area presses such as the Allens'. This lovely two-volume set printed by The Gregynog Press in Wales comprises Lamb's essays collected under the name "Elia" a kind of pseudonym that refers to Lamb himself. Number 300 of 350 copies octavo size 25 pp. A satirical view of women depicting them as serpentine villains with voluptuous illustrations reminiscent of stained glass. The original poem of this title dates back to about 1550; the text used here was written between 1605 and 1610. The impetus may have been as simple as the "timelessness of sex antagonism" from the Introduction which had its own boomerang effect - a later Welsh poet penned an answer in a poem entitled "In Defense of Women". ___DESCRIPTION: Original mauve cloth with gilt illustration to upper board and gilt lettering to backstrip eleven colour wood-engravings; Golden Cockerel type hand-made paper octavo size 9.25" by 4.5" 1-4 5-25 pp. limited edition this number 300 of 350 copies. Light scattered foxing and dampstaining offsetting onto one plate other plates in very good condition head and tail of spine is split. This is a single semi-monthly part of what appears to be the American edition of "China in a Series of Views Displaying the Scenery Architecture and Social Habits of that Ancient Empire." designed to de-mystify the great empire of China. It contains 4 steel engravings and several unrelated subject-wise pages of text and is complete as issued. The engravings are: The Stocking Maker / Policeman and Prisoner / Street Punishments / Examination of a Prisoner. Subscription publication was common during the 19th century making publications more affordable to the rapidly expanding middle class market and this method where illustrations and text are unrelated was used to deter subscribers from quitting partway through their subscription. The advertisement on the back cover gives the title "The Chinese Empire: A Comprehensive History of the Manners Customs Industries and Arts of the Chinese. by Rev. G.N. Wright. Magnificently Illustrated with Numerous Steel Engravings from Sketches taken on the Spot. by T. Allom Esq."
