[DOVES PRESS]; KEATS, John; COBDEN-SANDERSON, Thomas James (selected & arranged by).
Keats. Poems
Hammersmith London The Doves Press 1914. . One of 200 copies on paper; small 4to 240 x 170 mm; printed in red & black near-fine; original limp vellum by the Doves Bindery stamp to rear endpaper spine titled in gilt uncut mild spotting to fore-edges vellum toned and warped as usual otherwise a very good copy of this rare edition.
After establishing the Doves Bindery in 1893 Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson partnered with Emery Walker to found the Doves Press in 1901. Alongside the Kelmscott Ashendene and Vale presses it is considered one of the cornerstones of the Golden Age of Private Press drawing heavily on the spirit of the Arts & Crafts Movement that flowered at the turn of the century. The two partners along with Sydney Cockerell created type based on Nicolas Jenson's Roman type 1470s named the 'Doves Type.' Unfortunately the relationship between the two partners deteriorated resulting in said type being famously dumped in the Thames where it languished until 2014 when it was rescued and subsequently digitalised.
Tidcombe DP5 & DP7. [John Henry Nash] Cobden-Sanderson, Thomas James
The Ideal Book or Book Beautiful
Eugene OR: University of Oregon John Henry Nash Fine Arts Press 1933. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Quarto. 4 12 4 pp. Limited edition number 8 of 50 copies. As issued in marbled paper over boards with leather title label on the spine. Light rubbing to the edges; but generally a very well preserved copy.

Since the mid-1920s Nash had begun to develop relationships in Eugene Oregon both in and out of the University. Late in the 1920s he aided in the establishment of the John Henry Nash Fine Arts Press at the university. While some of the early books issued from this press in the 1920s were less than exceptional but the early 30s the quality of work was universally admired. This present title was called by the Inland Printer among the finest keepsake editions of frequently reprinted credo. While not printed by Nash his influence is evident throughout. With such a small limitation and about a third of the edition in institutional holdings this is very uncommon in commerce. A lovely book. Harlan Robert D. John Henry Nash: The Biography of a Career. p. 106-115. University of Oregon, John Henry Nash Fine Arts Press unknown

[Nash, John Henry] Cobden-Sanderson, Thomas James | decorations by Ray F. Coyle
The Ideal Book or Book Beautiful A Tract on Calligraphy Printing & Illustrations and on the Book Beautiful as a Whole
San Francisco: John Henry Nash 1916. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Quarto. 6 13 1 4 pp. First edition thus; number 152 of 165 copies. As issued in buff paper over boards with a printed paper title label on front and rear board; text in black title and shoulder notes in red. Binding is a trifle soiled including some staining to fore-edge of the front board at the bottom corner; contemporary gift inscription on the first blank; contents are clean.

Stunningly reprinted perhaps no other printer at the time had such a similar aesthetic Cobden-Sanderson's Dove Press—clean and elegant in type and page design. Nash really does capture the spirit of the original. Cobden-Sanderson thought so as well and wrote Nash: "What a perfectly beautiful book you have made of The Book Beautiful! I am enchanted with it! Paper type arrangement all combined under your clever hands to a while which is at once a thing of beauty and a symbol of that great order touched with delight which I am never tired of finding to be the supreme characteristic of the universe itself" quoted in O'Day Catalogue p.1-2. The praise goes on. . . . Uncommon. This copy with November 1918 gift inscription from Sylvia Loeb to Ruth Eddy. We are uncertain but the presenter is perhaps Sylvia Loeb Weil who co-authored with Rosetta Goldsmith several children's puzzle books. John Henry Nash unknown
