1898réf. ABC_505311898. Contemporary portfolio half green morocco and dark blue pebble-grained cloth sides with "Orient-Reise 1898" and "H. B." stamped in gold on the front board lined with floral paper green closing ties. With 32 albumen prints ca. 18.5 x 25.7 cm and ca. 23.5 x 27.7 cm mounted on cardstock most signed and captioned in French the negative a German manuscript caption in red ink below. Collection of 32 albumen photographs of Turkey Palestine and Egypt assembled by a German traveller who took part in an organised journey accompanying Kaiser Wilhelm II's state visit to the Ottoman Empire in 1898. Preserved in a portfolio with the title "Orient-Reise 1898. H.B." the photographs mainly depict mosques palaces churches and other important landmarks encountered along the route and include works by several of the leading commercial photographers active in the region: Mihran Iranian fl. 1891-1900 the American Colony Photography Department fl. 1890s-1940s Maison Bonfils 1867-1918 and the Zangaki brothers fl. 1870-1890.The trip was organised by Carl Stangen's Reisebüro in Berlin the first German international travel agency. In October 1898 Stangen organised a tour to the Middle East whose participants travelled in connection with Kaiser Wilhelm II's voyage to the Levant. The unidentified owner of the present collection with the initials "H.B. was part of the Stangen group and travelled with the party through Turkey and Palestine where Wilhelm dedicated the newly built Lutheran Church of the Redeemer on 31 October. When the imperial party returned to Germany the group continued to Egypt. Of particular importance in the present collection is the single unsigned photograph which shows the sizeable Stangen group posing at the pyramids of Giza. H.B. is likely among them but has not been identified. The other photographs depict landmarks encountered during the trip. The ten smallest photographs taken by the Armenian photographer Mihran Iranian are all of Constantinople present-day Istanbul including the Hagia Sophia Sultan Ahmed Mosque Nusretiye Mosque and Dolmabahçe Palace. Iranian's photographs are among the rarest produced by the major Armenian photographic studios active in the city with fewer than 300 images known to survive. Eleven photographs signed by the American Colony Photo Department concentrate on Jerusalem and its surroundings including the Western Wall Jaffa Gate Church of the Holy Sepulchre Al-Aqsa Mosque Mount of Olives Garden of Gethsemane and sites at Bethlehem. The American Colony photographers extensively documented Wilhelm II's visit to Jerusalem in 1898 making their presence in this collection especially interesting. The remaining ten photographs taken by Bonfils and the Zangaki brothers show Cairo its Citadel and other sites in Egypt. The portfolio is somewhat rubbed especially on the spine. The photographs are warped but otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Hannavy Encyclopaedia of 19th-century photography pp. 173-175 Bonfils and p. 1521 Zangaki. hardcover

Occult Sciences Library label to front pastedown; otherwise clean internally and very good. Scarce first English edition of one of the great illustrated books on ectoplasm. Originally published in German in 1914 the text documents German physician and psychical researcher Albert von Schrenck-Notzing's 1862-1929 experiments with mediums Eva C. and Stanislawa P. with "teleplastic" matter disembodied faces and other spirit forms as produced in the copious photographs. Schrenck-Notzing's interesting take on the experiments was the materializations and manifestations were "ideoplasty" or the physical shaping of matter by the medium's unconscious mind rather than spirits. Lawton on verso with a lady standing next to a late-19th-century camera with the text: Additional copies or enlargements of this Photograph can always be had produced by Adams & Co London. Photograph 10 x 14.6 cm. on card 10.6 x 16.3 cm. Very interesting photograph of the first medical school in Ceylon Sri Lanka. The image shows the ruins of the clinical school founded by Samuel Fisk Green 1822-1884 a Massachusetts-born missionary in 1847 in Manipay in the Jaffna district ca. 12 km. northwest of Jaffna. On the photo a dated memorial plaque has been placed in the wall of the dilapidated hospital that reads; Tamil text In memoriam S.F. Green 1893.Greens hospital was the second oldest teaching hospital set up in South Asia. During its glory days this hospital served the community with all medical surgical departments and was one of the best maternity wards on the island. When the American missionaries left Ceylon the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India was set up and it took control of running the hospital till the present day.Having been established in 1825 by the Americal Ceylon Mission the above mentioned Batticotta seminary trained future preachers and teachers. It also introduced photography via the daguerreotype procedure to Sri Lanka. Among the earliest native pioneers of this foreign technology was Swaminathar Kanagaratnam Lawton 1851-1919 who became a well-known and popular Ceylonese photographer who pioneered various photographic techniques including photography via albumen prints. He mainly worked and studied in his birthplace Jaffna where he established his photographic business S.K. Lawton & Co. in 1876. He is credited with inventing a number of photographic processes among which was one of the earlies experiments of colour photography used in the Indian Ocean region. Among other rewards he was granted a 14-year English patent for his work on preparing paper to prevent its injury during development of the photos and he was also involved in the manufacture of one of the first cameras on the island.Fine condition minimal creasing to corners.l "Dr. Samuel Fisk Greens contribution to medical education" a prominent historical lecture/paper originally presented and published at Kulendran Hall in Jaffna in 1998; "S.K. 1925réf. 239021925. Women's same sex intimacy vernacular photo archive circa 1925 to 1935 documenting social scenes in which women kiss embrace pose as couples and move between conventionally feminine dress and masculine coded work and leisure clothing. The most direct photographs show women kissing while seated together outdoors holding one another closely and staging a playful courtship tableau with one woman kneeling before another. These photographs date from an interwar period in which relationships between women could be intensely present in private life while remaining difficult to name publicly. Laws and public attitudes toward nonconforming sexuality grew harsher in the early twentieth century and fear of arrest family rejection loss of employment or housing and violence led many people to conceal aspects of their identities; during the same period municipal ordinances in numerous American cities criminalized appearing in public in clothing deemed inappropriate to one's sex. Photo archive of 20 silver gelatin vernacular photographs ranging from approximately 2.5 x 3.5 to 2.5 x 4.5 inches United States c.1925 to 1935. The photographs repeatedly depict women in pairs and small groups across rural domestic and recreational settings. One pair sits closely together in the grass and kisses; another woman wraps both arms around a seated companion and kisses her; two women stand pressed together in bathing attire; and another pair clasp hands and lean backward from one another in a playful outdoor pose. A particularly theatrical image shows a woman dressed in trousers or knickerbockers kneeling before a standing woman and gesturing upward in a scene resembling a marriage proposal or courtship performance. Several women wear neckties loose trousers knickerbockers overalls boots collared shirts and cropped hairstyles clothing that carried masculine associations during the period while other images show the same social world in dresses cloche style hats tailored coats skirts and bathing suits. Three women in work clothes pose together outdoors; another stands in a cultivated field wearing trousers and high boots; a woman carrying a basket of produce appears in similar clothing; and a mixed group gathers beside railroad tracks. Leisure scenes show women swimming reclining on blankets or grass embracing in gardens and yards and posing with arms around one another. One photograph captioned "Hank" on the verso depicts male to female cross dressing extending the archive's record of gender play beyond the women's masculine coded presentation. Several prints retain black paper album corners or mounting remnants from earlier album placement while other versos carry numerical stamps and later pencil notations. The archive belongs to a period when older forms of socially tolerated female companionship increasingly collided with emerging medical legal and popular definitions of homosexuality as a distinct and stigmatized identity. By the late 1920s and 1930s women whose relationships clothing or public behavior departed from heterosexual and feminine conventions faced growing scrutiny even as queer social worlds became more visible in cities such as New York. Performers including Gladys Bentley made female masculinity and desire for women conspicuous within Harlem nightlife appearing in men's formalwear and openly directing flirtation toward women while outside those exceptional public settings same sex relationships were more often preserved through private domestic life friendship networks and personal photographs. This group records that private register: not a single ambiguous embrace but repeated scenes of kissing coupled posing physical affection mock courtship masculine coded dress and cross dressing across a twenty photograph social record. Light to moderate surface wear occasional creasing and silvering remnants of album mounting at several corners. Overall in good condition. A concentrated visual record of women photographing same sex intimacy gender nonconforming presentation and private social bonds during the interwar years. unknown

Contemporary gold- and blind-tooled burgundy buckram with the title and volume number lettered in gold on the front and spine a double fillet border on both boards blind-tooled turn-ins gold and burgundy floral end papers gilt edges. Folio. With 50 photographic reproductions in black and white mounted onto thick passe-partout leaves separated by thinner leaves onto which typed descriptions are mounted. 2 volumes. Remarkable photographic album beautifully reproducing the paintings from the Shah Jahan Album also known as the Kevorkian Album. The album compiled by the Mughal emperor Jahangir 1569-1627 and his son Shah Jahan 1592-1666 contains miniatures from the best painters of the Mughal era such as Govardhan Mansur Daulat Payag and Chitarman with calligraphic text by famous calligraphers such as Mir' Ali Haravi. The 50 exquisite photographs accurately reproduce the details of the original miniatures highlighting the iconographic and stylistic richness of Mughal art.Mughal albums also known as muraqqa usually included existing works in the patrons collection as well as works created specifically for the album such as paintings and drawings folios from preparatory pattern books and calligraphy specimens. They were not bought ready-made but compiled over a longer period of time by its owners. Emperor Jahangir commissioned the first folios for the Shah Jahan Album around 1620 and his son continued after his death. Shah Jahan's additions are stylistically different from Jahangir's with more portraits and illumination and the inclusion of calligraphy pages. After his death the muraqqa now with 39 miniatures passed onto his son Aurangzeb 1618-1707 who did not commission any more folios. The muraqqa left the royal library in the early 19th century and was likely acquired by an art dealer from Delhi who added 11 miniatures around 1820. These were made in the 19th century but imitated the 17th-century style of the others. In the 20th century the muraqqa was bought by the New York art dealer Hagop Kevorkian who sold 9 folios to the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington and the remaining 41 to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where they still reside. The spectacular Shah Jahan Album is a collection of 50 single-page paintings which include intimate nature studies and portraits of the royal family and various dignitaries framed by a beautiful floral border. Each painting is faced by a single page of illuminated calligraphy made by renowned calligraphers. The photographs in the present work each mounted in a passepartout carefully reproduce the single-page paintings and three of the four calligraphic pages that open the collection. They are accompanied by a foreword and a short description of each painting which appear to be taken from an auction catalogue and were likely added later. A valuable testament to the interest in Mughal art in the 20th century this collection constitutes a seemingly unique iconographic resource as we have not been able to find another copy. There is no mention of a publisher or photographer but the quality of the prints suggests careful production intended for and commissioned by a scholar or collector specialising in Indian art. The present copy was part of the collection of Dr Ebadollah Bahari 1929-2018 noted historian of Persian art author of Bihzad master of Persian painting 1996 and benefactor of the Bahari Curatorship of Persian Collections at the Bodleian Libraries University of Oxford. The boards have been rubbed with minor loss of material on the back board of both volumes the joints are slightly weakened but the structural integrity of the bindings is still intact. Some of the mounted descriptions are lightly foxed. Otherwise in good condition. hardcover
