1945Best.-Nr. Bellmer1BELLMER Hans 1902-1945Autograph letter signed " HB " to Joë BousquetRevel Tuesday 11 September 1945 1 p. in-4° on pink paperSome tiny spotsBellmer is moved to find his Doll six years after being separated from her during the Second World WarThe artist is also much enthusiastic about the project in common with the poet on an amplified version of the "justification of sodomy"" Mon très cher ami !Dès le moment où je vous ai quitté l'autre jour avant la fin de ma lettre précédente ma vie a été sens dessus dessous : pensez ce que c'est d'être de nouveau après six ans de séparation parmi mes affaires : photos en couleurs immenses livres qui me sont chers notes dessins tableaux objets la Poupée vêtements d'elle et d'autres lettres souvenirs choses impondérables et émouvantes.J'ai dû passer trois jours à Castres. Il faut que je me mette au labeur !Affectueusement votreHB "The Second World War was not easy for Bellmer. Residing in Paris since 1938 he was arrested as a German national and therefore a suspect in the eyes of the authorities. Imprisoned in the Camp des Milles near Aix-en-Provence alongside Max Ernst he ended up taking refuge in hiding. The artist had created his Doll in 1934 and it is therefore not without emotion that he expresses here his reunion with his most famous artwork. He also evoked to Bousquet his desire to continue his illustrated project on L'Anatomie which later became his famous illustrated book Anatomie de l'image published in 1957.Bellmer and Bousquet have known each other for a short time but the mutual understanding between the two surrealists was already at its height. The artist unreservedly approves the poet's text on his "justification of sodomy" a pathetic but very real consequence of the wound on the sexuality of Joë Bousquet bedridden since the Great War. He does not hide his enthusiasm to be entrusted by the poet with a common on the "amplified justification" of the text which however remained in the embryonic state and was not published.

The original SFL was formed in NYC by Jefferson Poland in 1963 as New York City League for Sexual Freedom. When Poland moved to the Bay Area from NYC in 1966 he founded the SFL in the East Bay which was a loose-knit group with few rules little organization and no fees. After he broke away several others stepped in to create their own versions of the league including Richard Thorne Margo Rila and her husband Frank Esposito Rila. By 1971 several SFL chapters had formed around the US including the one of which Don Jackson was a member. Jackson whose copy this is was a gay activist in California who contributed to The Alpine County Project aka Stonewall Nation. In a letter responding to internal strife over liberal and conservative leaders in the SFL Jackson a Libertarian offered himself as a liberal candidate for office.
