ref. 21230831980. London. c. 1980. 277 x 217 mm. Typescript stapled in top left corner; cover sheet ff. 13 printed on recto only with illustration to f. 11; horizontal crease across middle cover sheet sunned with small black ink stains light browning to first couple of leaves a little chipping to edges very good.Typescript of a typically unsettling essay containing unpublished material. This is possibly a photocopy given the apparent cropping of the text on f. 8 and at the tops of a couple of leaves of an essay that would be published in truncated form in 'L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Volume Four' eds. Bruce Andrews and Charles Bernstein an issue of the journal Open Letter Fifth Series No. 1 Winter 1982 ed. Frank Davey pp. 83-86. The same issue contains an appreciation of Kathy Acker by Steve Benson pp. 77-82.The published version omits the title 'Essay on Writing' and the parts of the article that fantastical letters between Alfred de Musset Georges Sands and Gustave Flaubert as well as the 'VOODOO MAP WITH PICTURES OF EEYORE LOOKING FOR HIS TAIL' although it does include the closing section that features Winnie-the-Pooh and Owl facing a semantic crisis. The piece as a whole is a disorienting discussion of Acker's thesis that literature emerges when 'meaning is destroyed'. This argument is initally laid out in a fairly straightforward manner but is quickly complicated by Acker's characteristic mixture of allusion sexual fantasy and brutal humour. It is given an autobiographical slant by a passage describing a bitter middle-class female poet whose father disappears and whose mother quickly remarries leaving her bereft of security. In a harrowing section omitted in the published version Acker goes further by creating a desperate abandoned persona called Wendy the name of her estranged step-sister. The lesson seems to be that the loss of meaning and therefore the origin of literature lies in the kind of trauma that leaves a person unsure of what's true or good or safe: 'This is how mothers crap up their children. My attitude toward language stinks.' unknown
1991ref. SBBIH-F2QP55Y4EU7ZFlamingo 1991. paperback. Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing fanning inscriptions margin notes yellowing staining on edge or cover or pages bumps scuffs etc etc sometimes multiple of these. It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order at least not without checking with us first although we don't always have time to check. We aim to dispatch prompty the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. Flamingo paperback

A complete set in six parts: "The Case of the Murdered Twerp" "Longing for Better Things" "Stop It Ted I Screamed" "How Love Can Lead Youngsters to Murder" "The Future" and "The Life of Johnny Rocco." Very good on average with wraps showing toning light smudging and general handling. Volume IV has previous owner name inside front cover and light creasing.
