Featuring more than seventy photographs by Man Ray—some never before reproduced—alongside many rarely seen photographs of African art by his European and American contemporaries Man Ray African Art and the Modernist Lens uncovers a virtually unknown chapter in both the inventive activities of this celebrated artist and in this overlooked facet of photographic history. Meticulously researched and compellingly presented Wendy A. Grossman raises thought-provoking questions about the role photographs played in shaping perceptions of African art and in turn how such images led to distinctive modernist viewpoints across racial and geographic boundaries. Particularly notable is the treatment of the African pieces both as integral components of the modernist history to which they contributed and as elucidated by original scholarship by African art experts as objects with their own independent cultural histories. Revealing a more complex engagement with African art by Man Ray and his contemporaries than has been previously known Grossman provides a rich and nuanced study that makes an important addition to our understanding of critical issues in modernism that continue to influence the way we see African art today. With an essay by Ian Walker and additional contributions by Yaëlle Biro Poul Mørk Rainer Stamm and Tomás Winter. Concordance of African objects edited by Letty Wilson Bonnell. . 2009. 081667017X . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 370 pages; 320 drawings and photographs. Description: "ocked in enormous bank vaults and largely removed from public scrutiny for more than a decade the little known collection of the Man Ray Trust comprises more than 4000 works by Man Ray. The 320 photographs and drawings selected for this publication are among the rarest of Man Ray’s works and will be a revelation to even his most devoted admirers. At the core of Man Ray: Trees Flowers – Insects Animals is a series of landscape photographs made by Man Ray from the 1920s through the 1950s many of which bear the distinct influence of Eugène Atget. With subjects including castles and ruined buildings street scenes and the objects from which he drew inspiration for other artworks the photographs and drawings in this book represent an intermediary step in Man Ray’s creative process. The title of the series Trees Flowers – Insects Animals was discovered by the editor scrawled across the backside of a photograph and provides a key to this most unusual collection. These photographs function as a subject index to the themes and motifs that Man Ray employed in his better known works. They are on the one hand a record of his travels and observations in Europe and the United States. On the other hand they are the relic of a moment preserved by Man Ray for later use and interpretation." -- with a bonus offer--; New Edited and preface by John P. Jacob. Introduction by Merry A. Alias Man Ray considers how the artist’s life and career were shaped by his turn-of-the-century American Jewish immigrant experience and his lifelong evasion of his past. As an exploration of the artist’s deliberate cultural ambiguity which allowed him to become the first American artist to be accepted by the Paris avant garde this book examines the dynamic connection between Man Ray’s working-class origins his assimilation the evolution of his art and his willful construction of his own artistic persona as evidenced in a series of subtle encrypted self-references throughout the artist’s career. Beautifully illustrated Alias Man Ray will stand as a definitive study of an incomparable figure in 20th-century art. . 2009. 0300146833 . Yale University Press hardcover

1937rif. 90937GLM 1937. Fine. (Sanouillet 391 p. 32; Picabia Mnam p. 449 reproduit).
