"Already in 1972 the National Museum of Modern Art had a major retrospective devoted to Man Ray. Like all exhibitions held in collaboration with the artist at that time he extensively showed his creative activity and its fascinating diversity: paintings collages drawings sculptures assemblages etc rayographs. In relation to the photographs the other media were there in very small numbers. The current exhibition at the Centre Pompidou proposes therefore is the complementary part of the previous. The focus is on photography by bringing together hundreds of photographs both masterpieces of unknown or little known aspects of his production: portraits of Dadaists and Surrealists friends the celebrities of intellectual and artistic Paris the Anglo-Saxon writers creative photography Illustrative for surrealist magazines nudes and rayographs but also views of Paris the photo mode and commissioned portraits. Some of these blocks unknown in original prints have recently been drawn and will be shown for the first time. As for painting and objects fifty highly selected pieces will give a renewed vision of success he has achieved in various moments of his life with fresh and inventive works. "I paint what cannot be photographed I photograph the things that I don't want to paint . I would rather photograph an idea than an object and a dream rather than an idea." Man Ray's own words suggest the essence of his brilliant original and deeply influential photographic oeuvre. Taking up photography in 1915 for the purpose of reproducing his paintings he earned money doing the same for others when he went to live and work in Paris in 1921. This led to one of the richest careers in the history of photography ranging from portraits of celebrated artists musicians and writers such as Andre Breton Marcel Duchamp Erik Satie Arnold SchUnberg T.S. Eliot and Gertrude Stein to the pictures using light effects outside the camera for which he is famous cliche-verres rayographs and solarizations. These photographs are among the most exciting and revealing manifestations of the profusely fertile artistic impulse which made Man Ray equally celebrated as a painter sculptor writer and filmmaker. Besides many classic images this book includes a huge number of photographs that have never been seen before including portraits of Virginia Woolf and Antonin Artaud and a large selection of erotic pictures. They add up to a truly revealing look at Man Ray whom Cocteau called "the great poet of the darkroom." - website description. Philippe Sers unknown books

1937rif. 195165Paris: G.L.M. 1937. Inscribed by Man Ray to Surrealist muse Lise Deharme First and only edition presentation copy from the photographer inscribed on the title page to the Surrealist writer and muse Lise Deharme "A mon amie Lise affectueusement Man Ray Juin 1937". Though a successful writer in her own right collaborating with Joan Miró and Claude Cahun among others Deharme is best remembered as a Surrealist muse enchanting André Breton who contributed the foreword and posing as the Queen of Spades for Man Ray's image Lise Deharme en dame de pique. Described as Man Ray's "photographic swansong" this ironically titled little publication marked the turning point in the artist's life when he shifted his focus from photography to painting Parr & Badger. It is thought that during production the plate for one of the images "Plein-air artistique" was damaged and for many copies a reprint on a different paper stock was included. This copy has all 12 prints on the matching original paper stock. The die-cut outer wrapper was designed to function as a rudimentary frame for ease of viewing the images cropped to the edge as intended. Octavo. With 5 unnumbered letterpress leaves text one side only 12 heliograph plates after photographs by Man Ray. Sheets loose as issued in original blue wrappers front cover lettered in black. With the original die-cut black window wrapper. Blue wrapper faded through window; top edge of black outer wrapper slightly bumped: otherwise a near-fine copy. Parr & Badger p. 108. unknown

Les mains libres is the second collaborative work between Man Ray a pioneer of the Surrealist movement and Paul Eluard poet and one of the movement's founders. During the 1930s Man Ray made numerous drawings in Paris and the South of France. He shared them with Eluard who requested to keep them temporarily. Adhering to the Surrealist tradition the poet 'illustrates' the images not the opposite: upon Man Ray's return Eluard had paired each drawing with a poem. This collaboration resulted in the publication of Les mains libres featuring fifty-four illustrations by Man Ray facing as many poems by Eluard and three appendices 'Sade' 'Portraits' and 'Details' which include Man Ray's portraits of Pablo Picasso Andre Breton and Eluard. Provenance: This copy was presented by Eluard to the writer Goerge Mouton. Connected to Surrealist circles in the 1930s Mouton was a member of the Contre-Attaque group led by Georges Bataille and Andre Breton during 1935-1936. unknown
