1886ref. 0013532London: Charles & Edwin Layton. A very scare and unusual item! Bound in worn red cloth with gilt titles to front board and spine this 1886 hardcover First Edition is Good. X1V/259pp with Preface The manual with topics arranged alphabetically from Accounts to Worsted. Much text on assessment of Risk for named goods and structures often for Trades or manufacturing processes long abandoned. London docks are named and listed individually also Bristol Tyneside etc. Approximately 150 named Wharfs and Docks named with details of structure and Goods handled. Much can be deduced about fire risk in industrial processes paticularly in regard to textile Mills. Canal barges carrying mineral oils nirtro lime hay of straw were characteristed as uninsurable. Working of wood by steam power attracted an additional premium at Hull timber docks while lots of questions should be asked of the manufacturers of Lucifer matches before insurance is arranged. Farmers were asked if "any screening smutting or flour dressing by steam power" was undertaken on their land. Plenty on policy writing and re-insurance. Finally a paragraph on the character of proposers. Importers of fancy goods cap makers waterproof garment manufacturers and picture frame makers were to be treated with especial caution"particularly where these trades were carried on by Jews or foreigners". Altogether a considerable insight into trade practices and insurance risk assessment in the late 19th century. Spine is worn and rubbed with chips at top of spine. Corners worn and rubbed. Colour printed Bookplate of Provincial Insurance Office Library to fixed front endpaper. Endpapers slightly discoloured and board edges rubbed. Binding slightly shaked but all text complete. With 50 Reproductions in Colour of Famous Paintings wear to corners bumped. It is always my aim since the exact illustration of photography gives so well the main idea of pictures to write concerning such pictures as an aid to the full undertanding of them the history of their makers and sitters and their relation to the age that bred them rather than to attempt an aesthetic estimate of their artistry which can appeal at the best of the few; the more particularly as the few will gain a really true estimate of their artistic value only by close study of the originals. 1848ref. W1799London: John W. Parker 1848. 2 volumes: frontispiece 4 ccxxxii 504 pages; and frontispiece 4 649 1 pages. 12mo. First editions. Bound in full tan leather by 19th century Glasgow bookbinders Carss & Co.; marbled edges and endpapers. Published 3 years after the death of British writer John Sterling 1806-1844 at age 38 these two volumes contain much of his output as well as a memoir of his life by Charles Hare. Included are most of his fantasy tales among which are the novella The Onyx Ring five of the fantasy tales that were imbedded in the novel Arthur Coningsby and the longer short story "A Chronicle of England" which Murray Ewing describes as "a delightful fairy-haunted picture of England in the days before it received its first human inhabitants." John Sterling had long languished in obscurity but today he is hailed by many as an important progenitor of fantastical literature. In the Encyclopedia of Fantasy John Clute and John Grant argue that Sterling has to be considered "the most significant UK pioneer of fantasy." In The Dedalus Book of British Fantasy: The 19th Century Brian Stableford states: Sterling would surely have become one of the leading writers of his day had he not died so young and he might well have become the most important nineteenth century fantasy writer; his prose fantasies are more various and more adventurous than any other contemporary work. Very good condition: both volumes are clean and tight with some rubbing along edges of covers and spine. There is a Bloomingdales price sticker affixed to the verso of the front free endpaper in each volume. Rare: WorldCat locates only 5 copies in libraries worldwide. First Edition. Hardcover.
