"Between 1940 and 1944 the Germans carried out what was probably the most impressive building programme since the time of the Romans as they constructed the 'Atlantic Wall' from Norway to the Spanish border. They produced an architecture of pure form developed from methods of standardisation on a previously unimaginable scale and all the more startling for its contrast with the blatant eclecticism of Fascist architecture in peacetime." - Introduction. Story of the Partridge family and their eight children set against the social background of the 1880's in the upper New York state town of Phelps. Bellamy Partridge was a 1900 graduate of Hobart College Bellamy Partridge went on to study law and for about a decade practiced law with his father Civil War veteran and country lawyer Samuel Selden Partridge in the little town of Phelps New York--near Rochester--before striking out as a freelance writer novelist and historian. He was the author of many works including the national best-seller "Country Lawyer" 1939 a memoir of his father and its sequel "The Big Family" 1941. Partridge and his family moved out to California when "Country Lawyer" was picked up by one of the studios and he was given a six-month contract to adapt it for the screen. They lived at the Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood and while her husband labored on the screenplay his wife a short story and article writer herself composed letters back to her family in Connecticut that would later become the basis of her 1941 book "A Lady Goes to Hollywood: Being The Casual Adventures of an Author's Wife in the Much Misunderstood Capital of Filmland". By the time the screenplay was finished Pearl Harbor was attacked and America entered World War II; the project was permanently shelved and the film was never made. Stephen J Voorhies was a popular muralist pictorial mapmaker book illustrator and painter from the 1920's well into the 1960's. Of Dutch descent he was born in 1898 and grew up in the New York area. After serving in the U. S. Navy Voorhies attended the Pratt Institute in the Clinton Hill area of Brooklyn studying Art and Design. Graduating in 1922 he quickly earned a reputation as an artist able to work in any medium. He eventually established a permanent residence at 136 Linden Street Rockville Centre Long Island but maintained a separate studio at 303 West 42nd Street in Manhattan. His wife Dorothy Townsend Voorhies was an accomplished book illustrator and fashion designer in her own right. Stephen J Voorhies was listed in both the Who Was Who in American Art and Salons of America. Voorhies loved the then-popular concept of pictorial maps and murals — filled with busy scenes of trade industry and the bustle of rural and town life. In 1949 he designed the New York City Subway map. Whittlesey House, McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc hardcover

From Wikipedia: "Ralph Hale Mottram 30 October 1883 16 April 1971 was an English writer known as a novelist particularly for the Spanish Farm books and as a war poet of World War I. Mottram went from being a bank clerk in Norwich before the war to becoming lord mayor there in 1953. The Spanish Farm won the 1924 Hawthornden Prize. He also wrote a biography of John Galsworthy." From Wikipedia: "Eric Honeywood Partridge 6 February 1894 1 June 1979 was a New Zealand British lexicographer of the English language particularly of its slang. His writing career was interrupted only by his service in the Army Education Corps and the RAF correspondence department during World War II. Partridge was born in Waimata Valley near Gisborne on the North Island of New Zealand to John Thomas Partridge a grazier and his wife Ethel Annabella Norris. In 1907 the family moved to Queensland Australia where he was educated at the Toowoomba Grammar School. He then studied first classics and then French and English at the University of Queensland. During this time Partridge also taught for three years as a school teacher before enrolling in the Australian Imperial Force in April 1915 and serving in the Australian infantry during the First World War serving in Egypt Gallipoli and on the Western Front before being wounded in the Battle of Pozières. His interest in slang and the "underside" of language is said to date from his wartime experience. Partridge returned to university between 1919 and 1921 when he received his BA. After receiving his degree Partridge became Queensland Travelling Fellow at Balliol College Oxford where he worked on both an MA on eighteenth-century English romantic poetry and a B. Litt in comparative literature. He subsequently taught in a grammar school in Lancashire for a brief interval then in the two years beginning September 1925 took lecturing positions at the Universities of Manchester and London. From 1923 he "found a second home" occupying the same desk K1 in the British Museum Library as it was then known for the next fifty years. In 1925 he married Agnes Dora Vye-Parminter who in 1933 bore a daughter Rosemary Ethel Honeywood Mann. In 1927 he founded the Scholartis Press which he managed until it closed in 1931 publishing over 60 books during this time. From 1932 he commenced writing in earnest. His first major work on slang Slang Today and Yesterday appeared in 1933 and his well-known Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English followed in 1937. During the Second World War Partridge served in the Army Education Corps later transferring to the RAF's correspondence department before returning to his British Museum desk in 1945. Partridge wrote over forty books on the English language including well-known works on etymology and slang. He also wrote novels under the pseudonym Corrie Denison and books on tennis which he played well. His papers are archived at the University of Birmingham British Library King's College Cambridge the Royal Institute of British Architects the University of Exeter the University of San Francisco Warwickshire Record Office and William Salt Library." From the Australian Dictionary of Biography entry: He Eric Partridge eventually himself published 'Frank Honywood Private' as part of Three Personal Records of the War London 1929 which ranks as a minor classic of war literature. He was concerned to commemorate his mate Corporal Howard Phillips who had died at Mont St Quentin to attempt to describe the terrible battle of Pozières to expose himself as an example of a soldier broken but somehow carrying on under appalling stress and to write the war out of his system." 1834rif. 378New York: Published by the Author 1834. 8vo. 190 x 120 mm. 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches. viii 9-179 pp. Original cloth boards rebacked with cloth remnants of original spine laid down. Light foxing throughout. With faults a good sound copy. Second edition originally published in New York by H. Wallis in 1823 which included information on British practices. In the self-published edition of 1834 Partridge remove much of this material and focused more on the extraction of colors from wood the chemistry of scouring and dyeing and color preparation. The first 40 pages of the book describe in detail the methods and materials used in scouring raw wool and cotton to ensure that all oils and natural elements are removed and cleansed out. The next 100 pages are devoted to dyes. Partridge discusses in detail the which natural materials produce colors pigments how to make the extractions and finally how to mix the extracts with solvents and oils to create a color that will fix when applied to textile material. The final part of the book has to do with preparing silks and cotton and some variations on the techniques for producing and fixing colors. A notice on the verso of the title-page reads "The author informs Manufacturers and Dyers that he is at all times willing and desirous to give any information and recipes that may be in his power respecting the manufacture of woollens and dying free of cost." In addition to writing and publishing his Practical Treatise William Partridge was a textile dyer and seller who also built a business in NYC that imported and extracted pigments from wood sources which was to become one of the largest of its kind on the East Coast before the Civil War.
