réf. 41341Norwood S.A. : Printed and published by Sydney Partrige 1908. First edition. Octavo 190 x 120 mm original pictorial wrappers lightly marked chips to head and foot of spine; 104 pp headings printed in red; fore-edges uncut contents excellent with the contemporary ownership inscription of Doris Egerton Jones Adelaide-born feminist novelist and playwright. This early Australian private press publication is a collection of short stories by New Zealand-born Australian writer Kate Margaret Partridge 1871-1953. It was issued under the male nom de plume 'Sydney Partrige' like much of the writer's other literary output which included two completed novels one The Education of Clothilde written in partnership with 'Cecil Warren' a.k.a. Leonora Polkinghorne South Australian feminist appeared in serialised form collections of verse and contributions to various periodicals. Life's Wallaby was published in Adelaide in 1908 by her husband Hal E. Stone during the brief period when Stone was establishing his Koolinda Press in Norwood. It is quite likely the striking cover graphic was designed by one or both of the Partridges. ""Gossip"" in a review of the book in the Sydney Stock and Station Journal 12 May 1908 writes under the misapprehension that the author is a male - 'Good man Sydney' the reviewer declaims. The review is generally positive but ""Gossip"" lavishes special praise on one story in particular - The Metempsychosis of John Wedderburn - which is commended as a fine example of the horror genre 'worthy of Edgar Allen Poe'. At the end of the review readers are advised that they can write off to 'Sydney Partridge' at 90 Edward Street Norwood to secure a copy of the book for 1s. 2d. including postage. Kate Partridge was like her Adelaide friend and frequent collaborator Leonora Polkinghorne a feminist and suffragist. An example of her attitudes is delivered bluntly in one of her articles published in The Worker in 1908 under her usual pseudonym: '. no woman of powerful intellect should ever marry unless she would be content to sink herself in her children in doing which she gains nothing unless her desire for domesticity is stronger than her genius.' Doris Egerton Jones 1889 - 1973 was a talented author writing her first play at the age of 14 and her first novel the year after. In 1909 she enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Adelaide and after graduating in 1911 enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws despite women not being permitted to practice in South Australia at the time. Jones wrote a letter of protest to the Premier John Verran and an enabling law was passed in 1911 although Jones had to then abandon her studies due to illness. Jones continued to publish works featuring a strong heroine as protagonist and published under her maiden name after marriage. It is clear the Adelaide women Jones and Partridge shared similar views about women's place in society which lends this particular copy of Life's Wallaby to have a quite special association. 1998réf. 33443London 1998. 1st Edition. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Signed by Author. Autograph letters signed by Frances Partridge in her 98th year. Partridge Frances. 1900 - 2004. The second to last surviving member of the Bloomsbury Group the last being Anne Olivier Popham Bell wife of Quentin Bell as of 2007. A wonderful original set of two handwritten letters dated 1998 to Vita Sackville-West's bibliographer. In addition an original photograph Inscribed on the verso by Frances Partridge. Her death in 2004 at the great age of 103 closed a remarkable chapter in English literary life. Her friendships with Virginia and Leonard Woolf Lytton Strachey Dora Carrington David Garnett her brother-inlaw are vividly chronicled in her memoirs and would have assured her own immortality. Born and brought up in the heart of Bloomsbury in Bedford Square she became allied by marriage and friendship to everyone of significance in the literary and artistic worlds of the Twenties and Thirties. Two letters on stationery from her London home on West Halkin Street One sheet on ivory paper measuring approx. 8 3/4" x 5 1/4" written on both sides. Reads in full: "Flat 2 West Halkin St. London SWIX 8JL December 3 '98 Dear Keith Ravenscroft Yes indeed the bookshop where I started working in ~ I think - 1921 certainly was Birrell and Garnett. David Garnett was also my brother in law this first wife being more of my elder sisters ~ Rachel or Ray the " lady" what became a 'fox.'! it was the assistant &. accountant and it was there that I got to know all the famous Bloomsbury characters who lived near own shop . the Bells Woolfs Roger Fry EM Forster. A little further off were the Sitwells and Nicholson's but I don't think we ever had Vita's book on Chatterton. Of course you must know the life of Chatterton whose second of two volumes has now her published It in by Richand Holmes.our best living biographer though not a member of Bloomsbury itself . I think I may myself be a member of that group & that I was friends of them all & have a great many letters from them you might even find interest in my own 7 dearies about them ! I am now 98. Yours sincerely Frances Partridge" One sheet of personal blue stationery measuring 8 3/4 by 11 1/4 inches written on both sides. Reads in full: "West Halkin Street London SWIX 8JL 0171 235 6998 November 17th 1998 Dear Keith Ravencroft I was interested to get your letter showing interest in the Bloomsburg group & I felt much as you do when after leaving college I came to London and went to work in a bookshop where many of then bought books just off Gordon Square you if right about Their deserving our interest I feel myself a late - comer ; I would say Old Bloomsbury began to form into a group at Cambridge ~ the heart of it being the daughters a sows of Sir Leslie Stephen Vanessa Virginia Thoby & Adrian & of Sir Richard Strachey of whom the most important was Lyston and his first cousin Duncan Grant. I Knew all these except Thoby who died of a fever caught abroad. The men were all Cambridge men including the husbands of the Stephen girls. Clive Bell and Leonard Woolf. I don't think any of them thought of themselves as a group but they shared many interests - literature & art travel were probably the common ties In fact whatever you say in your letter They tended to be left wing believed in independence of thought & highly valued friendship. You asked me to correct any mistakes so I will say that Harold was Vita's husband and probably her son Nigel sent you the book His brother Ben is dead now. They were not really Bloomsbury at it's . Her friendship with Virginia has brought her to be considered as such . They married Blooms did a had children and friends and so they have got into quite a clan. After all the Strachey's & Grans had highland blood! Ask me anything you want to know there is such a lot I don't know what to tell you. Yours Sincerely Francis Partridge" Expected fold lines. An early apostle of farmer co-operation movements he was one of the founders and first president of the Territorial Grain Growers' Association in 1901- later Grain Growers' Grain Co 1906 but later lost the leadership because of visionary and radical views. He urged public ownership of elevators and advocated the creation of a farmer-labour party to establish a `Cooperative Commonwealth' through which social justice could be achieved. The present title though without any literary merit reflects the visionary zeal and hatred for economic inequality that was an important factor in the founding of protest parties such as the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation CCF and the Social Credit Party". The Electrical Handbook for Women was the 'cornerstone publication' of the Electrical Association for Women which was founded in 1924 by engineer Caroline Haslett and other members of the Women's Engineering Society 'in part to encourage the use of electricity in the home' Oxford Dictionary of National Bibliography. The contents are well-illustrated and include sections on the general principles of electrical technology legal and regulatory issues and technical details of applications like lighting heating cooking and laundry. Though edited by Haslett the book's main author was electrical engineer Margaret Partridge 1891-1967 who began her career as a munitions worker during the First World War then founded her own firm M. Partridge & Co. Domestic Engineers. 'The new company focused on providing lighting and electric power for farm and country houses. In 1922 she put on an exhibition of electric models and machines in Exeter including a range of labour-saving devices aimed at women in the home. It was predicted that her exhibition would "stir up the women of Exeter to demand the installation of electricity"' The Woman Engineer col. 1 no. 17 1923. At the completion of her first rural electrification scheme in Brampton in 1926 she wrote to Haslett 'My dear for sheer exciting experience give me a town to light' ODNB.
