1979rif. 195089London: Routledge & Kegan Paul 1979. Frances Partridge's manuscript notes on the philosophy of her friend Frank P. Ramsey loosely inserted in her copy of the 1979 reprint of his Foundations with her ownership signature on the front free endpaper. The notes were apparently made in preparation for "Death of a Philosopher" her chapter on Ramsey in Memories 1981. Partridge 1900-2004 was an intimate of the Bloomsbury circle who eventually became its last surviving member. Around 80 when she made these notes she was "sought out by a new generation of writers and scholars interested in the Bloomsbury world of her youth to whom she was always generous in accordance with her strong belief in the importance of telling the truth" ODNB. Ramsey 1903-1930 was Partridge's close friend a Cambridge Apostle and close intellectual associate of Wittgenstein who made important contributions to mathematics philosophy and economics before his early death at 26. Wittgenstein accompanied Partridge to Ramsey's deathbed. The notes are intellectual rather than merely reminiscent engaging closely with Ramsey's arguments and their implications; Partridge "maintained a lifelong interest in philosophy which she would read for pleasure" ODNB. Her assessment is nevertheless far from uncritical. Comparing Ramsey with Bertrand Russell and Socrates she concludes: "I find a lot of this unintelligible even to the extent of not seeing its interest". Notes: single sheet of lined paper 320 × 181 mm approximately 500 words in ink on both sides. Book: octavo original green cloth spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Notes with slight fraying round extremities and handling creasing; similar handling marks to book and jacket the book with some pencilled sidelining: overall in very good condition. hardcover
