1825ref. 18320French: n.p. 1825. Very good. 11 engraved cut-out figures or objects including ferryman three couples wolf goat cabbage and boat to be slotted into boat original box with engraved pictorial label colored by hand A rare children's game possibly printed by the Parisian publisher Nepveau. Contained in the box measuring 14cm x 7cm x 1cm is a complete set of figures for the two river crossing puzzles known as the 'Jealous Husbands Problem' and 'Goat Wolf and Cabbage'. The earliest account of these puzzles is in the 9th century manuscript "Propositionnes ad Acuendos Juvenes" Problems to Sharpen the Young attributed to Alcuin. In both puzzles there are only two places in the boat. In the Jealous Husbands Problem no woman can be with another man unless also accompanied by her husband. In Goat Wolf and Cabbage the wolf will eat the goat and the goat will eat the cabbage unless they are guarded by the boatman. Originally accompanied by counters and an instruction sheet now lost. The box is lightly worn else in very good condition; the figures are in fine condition except the boat which has been repaired and the cabbage which lacks the lower part of its insertion tab and one female figure lacks a hand. And people are why executives ger ulcers." "Even thought ULCERS is a close approximation of everyday business life it's fun to play. After all you don't often get the opportunity to manipulate for fun and profit. Go ahead. Be your own boss. Get ULCERS." These are some quotes from the description on the back of the box. It also mentions "ages 9 to adult". We can wonder what this game's ultimate purpose was: To start teaching children young the intricacies of choosing a career as an executive To offer an amusing game to the proletariats Or was is just a fun game made in the late 1960s Whether the developer of the game had any or none of these in mind the fact does remain that this is a game of the times. The "people" that you have to chose from to hold different positions have some major gender disporpotions: 16 male cards and only 6 female cards. With 7 positions 2 secretaries 2 salesman 1 sales manager 1 vice president and 1 president for each player to fill its hard to believe that the "woman cards" were used for much beyond the secretaries. 1809ref. 6214This is an original linen-backed folding map game published in London in 1809 by William Darton. Overall 25 1/2 x 21 inches. It is an early example of the "Cartographic Game" genre that became very popular in later Victorian England. The map folds and fits into the original slipcase with printed label. The rules are printed in columns at the sides. The object of the game is to move tokens originally in the shape of pyramids their landing place determined by use of a teetotum called a totum at that time and read about the region upon which one landed. It was both competitive and educational. Early map games such as this have become very scarce. Most did not survive since they were children’s toys. This one is in remarkably good condition. There is a light stain in the lower left of the map part and general light age-toning but the colors are bright and crisp. The linen backing is sound and the folds are intact. The original slipcase has two printed paper labels. Darton, William unknown books
