Giltrap of Mountjoy School in 1914. Gouldsbury writes of numerous encounters with tigers in his own adventures hunting from elephant back and machans as well as leopards and maruading elephants with additional references to bison ibex and others. Davies relates his time serving during the Sepoy Mutiny work as a sporting inspector and specifically hunting down tigers elephants and others endangering villagers and livestock. One chapter specifically mentions hunting a 419 lb. tiger stretching over 10 feet 7 inches from nose to end of tail and standing 3 1/2 feet which had terrorized villagers killing cattle across Bengal. 1918Best.-Nr. 98475France. July 20 1918. 1918. Very good. - Octavo 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide. Approximately 173 words penned on three of the four sides of a folded sheet of personalized letterhead. The letterhead from his family home of Brockhurst Grange Road Guernsey was used elsewhere as is indicated by the identification having a line crossed through it. Dugmore is most probably writing from France. He writes to the American lecture manager James B. Pond that "I am to return under the instructions of the comparatively new Ministry of Information as soon as I have gathered the material I want. This will include the results of a visit to the front both with the British & American forces in France a probable visit to the Grand Fleet visits to the largest munitions works & ship yards. So I hope to be ready to return in September. That is to say leaving here about the middle of that month. The plan to go to the west coast California etc. will be first rate.By the way I have been a Major since Feb 10th & never knew it till the other day." He signs in full "Very truly yrs A Radclyffe Dugmore". In a postscript he writes: "Are you mentioning the African lecture for the west". Pond has stamped the note:"ANS'D AUG 29 1918". A few words are slightly smudged and the letter is folded twice for mailing. Very good. The big game photographer and author Major Arthur Radclyffe Dugmore 1870-1952 was also an artist illustrating some of his books and producing a series of prints of wildlife. He traveled extensively photographing and filming animals throughout the world and particularly in Africa. The author of "The Wonderland of Big Game" "The Romance of the Beaver" "Camera Adventures in the African Wilds" and "The Romance of the Newfoundland Caribou" among others his films include "The Wonderland of Big Game". He was the subject of a 1931 Lowell Thomas biography "Rolling Stone: The Life and Adventures of Arthur Radclyffe Dugmore". At the beginning of World War 1 Dugmore went to the battle front and recorded his experiences. He wrote of them in his book "When the Somme Ran Red". Quoting from the dust jacket of the book: "This book was written during wartime by a gassed British infantry officer incapacitated and no longer fit for service in the trenches. Dugmore was an unusual soldier who would normally have been considered too old for front line duties from the outset. He was already well into middle age at the outbreak of hostilities having spent a career as a naturalist and sportsman and it was only due to influential friends that he managed to obtain a commission in an infantry regiment - the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Yet this was not his first experience of the Western Front. As the German Army swept into Belgium the civilian Dugmore-armed only with a cine camera-travelled to the front as the small Belgian Army vainly attempted to stem the advance to experience the war at first hand. His account of this early stage of the war makes unusual and fascinating reading. After joining the army the author joined his regiment serving in the trenches during the period leading towards the First Battle of the Somme in 1916 and it is this and his time during the battle itself that are the principal subjects in this account." Best.-Nr. 214048Early 20th Century. Colour folding game sheet some light browning and a few small holes at folds but overall a good and attractive game. 54 x 80cm. The title of this board game sheet indicates that the game is designed for two opposing sides with one side acting as the attackers and the other as the defenders. The defending side possesses more naval power compared to the attacking side. Although specific playing instructions are not provided information on the right-hand side suggests that offensive tactics should involve either seizing or charging. At the top and bottom there are lists of rear force units for both sides including docks for housing captured enemy boats and sunken boats Red Cross field hospitals and facilities for casualties. Additionally in the corners two small illustrations of warships are printed in blue ink. . unknown

A brief and spirited discussion of the various aspects of the game including the somewhat doubtful claim that 'Vingt mille Anglais se sont jetés dans la Tamise Eperdus décavés désespérés et fous De 'n'avoir pas su faire une attaque en atouts: Il faut jouer atout alors surtout qu'on doubte Car c'est un éclaireur qu'on jette sur la route.' 1940Best.-Nr. 216804Japan. Circa 1940. Colour folding game sheet 36.5 x 26cm 10 wooden playing pieces each with embossed images in beige and blue complete original box 15.5 x 7.6 x 2.3cm considerably worn and soiled and corners reinforced the game itself is in very good bright condition. This is a two-player board game where air planes and war ships fight against each other. Fascinatingly the game sheet illustration shows the battle ground is in the Pacific where islands with palm tree are dotted. Consequently the game might be produced at the early stage of the Pacific War. The players attack each other after starting from a naval base and an air base. There are two islands each where they are safely protected from their enemies. The playing pieces are made out of paper with embossed images of war ships and air planes in beige air power and blue sea power colours. . unknown
1892Best.-Nr. 215726大野栄吉. Ōno Eikichi. Meiji 25 1892. Colour woodblock print 22.8 x 32.5cm evenly browned few chips in margins but overall very good. This colourful woodblock print serves as a point sheet for a horse racing board game. While the game rules are unclear the print vividly captures an exciting race scene featuring three horses and their jockeys. The race unfolds in a festive atmosphere complete with blossoms and lanterns while the spectators appear to include the Meiji Emperor and Empress along with their entourage. The Emperor is depicted in full military uniform and the Empress is shown in a traditional kimono. The print also displays the prizes for first through seventh place which include a silver cup a trophy a riding cap a scarf a shoe and a whip. Western-style horse racing began in Japan in the mid-19th century following the arrival of Westerners and became a high-class social event during the Meiji period. . 大野栄吉. [Ōno Eikichi]. unknown
